The Scallop Shell served us an excellent lunch and had a great selection of food on the menu. We went for the lunchtime specials; fish cakes, fish and scampi, all of which were delicious. All came with chips, mushy peas and a cup of tea! The desserts were just as good, especially the sticky toffee pudding. The place is wonderfully decorated with a fish theme and is lots of fun. Stumbled upon this gem after a quick tour around the ancient Bath site. Thank goodness for Yelp! Small restaurant with a second floor. Cozy, clean and very chic! Tableware was very pretty and the decor was simple and tasteful. They had a lunch special for £10 that came with entree of fish and chips or goujons and chips plus a Yorkshire tea, buttered bread and mushy peas. A great deal! The buttered bread was yummy, bread was so soft with a good amount of butter spread all over. The fish was nice and crispy with a thin coating of batter. The portion of the fish was very generous. And the chips were pretty good too. However....the highlight of this meal was the Yorkshire tea. It was sooooo good, it tastes like Hong Kong milk tea (strong black tea with condensed milk) and was so delicious. I love tea and I'd never heard of this Yorkshire tea before and now I'm hooked. Thank you, Scallop Shell! Yorkshire tea is basically a working man's milk tea you enjoy before starting work outside on a cold blustery day. It may be a usual cuppa to the average Englishman but I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the meal. Service was great and super helpful! A gem of a find with delicious food to write home about! We are taking a few days to relax in Bath after running the London Marathon, and we were having a hankering for some good fish and chips. Rick Steves recommended The Scallop Shell in his Great Britain travel guide, so we thought we'd give it a try. This eatery is a little off the beaten path, but it's well worth the extra 5 minutes out of your way. Tucked away in a non-touristy neighborhood, the main dining area has less than two dozen tables. The host asked if if we had reservations. When we said no, we were afraid he was going to turn us away. Instead, he took us upstairs, where they had even more tables. Upstairs, you go to the bar and order your food from the bartender rather a server coming to your table. The upstairs also felt lighter (more lighter, walls not as dark) and less noisy (the music was pretty loud downstairs). But the food. The food is what you're here for. We ordered the fried prawn. The menu said 4 pieces, but we got 6. Maybe they were a little smaller than normal, but they were delightful. The batter was light and lightly seasoned on its own, so you could just eat it with lemon juice. The sauce it came with was delicious. Lightly sweet and packed with flavor. The prawn was cooked perfectly--tender and moist. Not over cooked and rubbery, or underdone and fleshy. For our entree, we split an order of fried cod fillets and chips. It was the cheapest "fish and chips" on the menu but it was absolutely wonderful. The fish was well-cooked. Moist and not dry, with just a touch of meatiness to it--rather than some fish, which feel mushy or TOO flaky that just fall apart. The batter was also great. Light and crispy, it never felt greasy or heavy. Even the tartar sauce it came with was tasty. One thing we didn't realize (because we didn't pay enough attention to the menu) was that the fish and chips come with something called "mushy peas." It turns out this is a British dish. In this particular case, mind blown!! How could something as simple as mashed up peas taste so good?! The mushy peas had the consistency of mashed potatoes, but it included some texture in the form of some peas that hadn't been completely mushed. It was well-seasoned and stood on its own. In fact, I'm going to look up mushed pea recipes to see if I can make some. They would be a great alternative to potatoes, and higher in protein. All in all, a delicious place we highly recommend. If you're ever in Bath, definitely give The Scallop Shell a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

So glad we came here. On our day tour to Bath, we looked up local eats and since we had not tried fish and chips yet (which I kept my expectations very low for) we decided to find the Scallop Shell. It's not in the heart of the touristy Bath area, which I appreciated since we wanted a quiet and intimate sitdown...just a short walk from the square. After being seated, you can order at the register and they will keep your tab open. You go back to there to pay your bill. We ordered their 10 pound lunch special, which was a huge serving to share between three of us ladies. They gave us a huge fried fish, chips, tartar sauce, mashed peas, sliced white bread with butter lathered. On top of this, we ordered three side salads (cucumber, fennel and dill blend) and ginger beers. Everything was delicious, not overly salty, fried to perfection and plentiful in portion. We walked in without a reservation. A quick glance indicated that every table was occupied. Fortunately, they had an upstairs level and an outdoor area, which will be great in summer. Our party of four had the seafood platter, separate haddock and skate wings plates with chips. Side orders of mushed peas and season vegetables (heritage carrots). Everything was fresh. The fish batter was crispy crunchy. There were oysters, cockles, prawns, half crab. Everyone enjoyed the meal and there was sufficient portions. I felt like I was right by the beach and the hot smell of fish and chips and balminess of the oil took me right to the coast! Let me just start off by saying that this review is purely based on my experience trying to get a table at this place. This is not a review on their food, which I have heard is amazing, nor of the table service. This review is purely based on how me and my parents were treated when we asked for a table. +++++ My parents and I were in Bath two weeks ago. We joined a tour that brought us to Stonehenge and afterwards, allowed us to enjoy the City of Bath for a couple of hours. By the time we got to Bath at 3PM, we were famished. So I looked up restaurants in the area, and of course, this place was the first place to pop up--and it was allegedly the best place around. I was very much excited to bring my parents here because they've yet to have some good fish and chips, and also, because my dad loves fresh seafood. The restaurant is a lovely spot that is not too far from Queen Square. Upon entering, I was greeted with a smile from the fish guy behind the raw bar, which I very much appreciated. He then directed me to the "maitre d'" table where the "maitre d'" was supposed to seat us. That is when it everything went downhill. First off, I did not make a mistake when I used quotation marks when mentioning the maitre d'--because there was practically none... at least one that was decent. The maitre d' was basically the waitress--the ONLY waitress serving the whole restaurant. Now, call me an obnoxious New Yorker, but that is unacceptable; especially for a restaurant as popular as this one. Anyway, this waitress comes up to us in an unwelcoming manner and asks if we had a reservation. I said we did not. She then looks at the table reservations and flat out says no in a really dismissive manner. She did not offer us the option to take bar seats (which were available), and said we have to wait for an hour if we wanted seats. I took a hard look around the restaurant: There were only two tables being served, and most of the tables in the restaurant were available, (plus the bar seats, which I'm pretty certain aren't put up for reservation). Even my mom noticed and made a remark in Filipino. Now, I'm not an expert at restaurant management, but a group of three is not that hard to seat--especially in an almost-empty restaurant, with bar seats, at 3PM in the afternoon. Also, unless your restaurant is brimming with people, with no tables or seats vacant at that very moment, you never tell walk-in customers to wait an hour. If a group does not come in past 15 minutes of their reservation time, you release their reservation and seat the people who walk in. I walked out of this restaurant with the impression that the "maitre d'": 1.) Was really incapable of managing tables; 2.) didn't care about losing the restaurant money; and 3.) is in SERIOUS need of customer service training. After I came back home from my vacation, I told my boyfriend about our experience. After hearing my story, he reminded me of a fourth possible impression which I totally missed: That we were racially discriminated and refused service because we weren't white. We had such a lovely time in England, and this was the only place I felt we were given terrible service or felt like we were discriminated. I was willing to spend a lot of money here to make my parents happy, but after how this waitress treated us, I am glad I did not. Never forget, best revenge is your paper. read more

So good, we went here two nights in a row. The kids had goujons, we had fish (cod) and chips. There was also tons of other seafood on the menu (oysters, clams, fish), but we wanted to get our fill of authentic fish and chips. This place was recommended by a local and was by far THE best fish and chips we've had ever!! We also had a lovely (local?) cider to wash down the perfect meal. Fish is super fresh (the menu states where all the seafood is from), even the potatoes for your chips have a provenance!, the staff is friendly and nice, the space itself is really lovely. My starter of roasted local mussels, clams, shrimp, and cockles came in a simple but delicious lemon, thyme, and butter preparation. Nothing fancy. Just a well executed showcase of great local products. My entree of grilled monkfish tail was perfectly done and even the chips were a cut above. I can't say enough for the food here. The French fries held their own potato -y flavor when eaten with the fish. And the mushy peas... Seriously, if like the diners in our group, visiting Americans avoiding mushy peas, STOP and have them here . The perfect fish became even tastier. Finally, the clean crisp taste of the Elderberry Sparkling water complemented nicely. This is a comfortable restaurant with helpful servers, and there appeared to be more locals than fellow tourists. Oh my cod! We were recommend to come here by some guy on the airplane, and we're so glad we did! They have unbelievable service and food! We were seated on a lovely terrace with very private and Georgian architecture views. We ordered cod, and some other fish based on the water's recommendations. All the portions were generous sized and delicious. Now for the kicker. When we asked for milder beer, they brought out 5 different beers for free for us to try. Then, all of us got free ice cream at the end! I can't recall ever receiving this kind of generosity. The waiters (owners?) were really cool to talk to as well. All in all, we had an amazing time. On my trip across England, my friend and I stopped at the Scallop Shell. I loved the entrance and how you immediately see them cooking and preparing the food. I LOVED The tub of seafood. Nice touch. After being seated upstairs I found out that you can order the children's size dishes and that in the UK they don't put an age limit to the smaller sizes!!!! I love it!!! Some adults just have a smaller appetite. I was pleasantly surprised at the "smaller" size!!! It was huge!!! So glad I didn't order the adult size. The fish and chips were delicious. Flakey and not oily. Loved the candle light feel. If I ever make it back to England I'll hope to go back to this restaurant read more
