We tried to enjoy this restaurant and despite calling ahead on New year's Day we got a shoddy welcome and left without dining. One star is for the lack of customer service. (Reading Shontae J's review of the food that day I think we had a lucky escape!) The person who answered the phone said no reservation was needed; when asked about parking they said it was free on Queen's Sq. (Actually it's pay all day, every day which I discovered after dropping off the family and driving around the block. And it's £3 per hour and 1 hour is the max.) The missus, plus baby stroller and toddler in tow got to Loch Fyne's door. The staff didn't come to assist despite her looking for help. Instead they slowly wandered around the tables, then reluctantly came to help. Then she was asked if she had a reservation. "No... Do I need one?" It turns out it was quiet and She didn't need one (like the guy on the phone said) so why this passive aggressive attitude? Totally uncalled for. Then the deal breaker was that half the menu was unavailable as it's New year's Day. Ok, but please say so when I call on the phone because that's the only thing that counts at a restaurant. Great lunch date with my wife. We went to Bristol just to try this restaurant because my wife likes seafood and I liked the warm reception I received some time ago when I popped my head in to grab a menu while walking past. We ordered from the Set menu. Scottish Peppered Mackerel, Pork Belly and twice-cooked chips (fries), and Creme Brûlée for me. Crispy Sprats, Mussels and mixed vegetables for her. The Mackerel was surprisingly delicious. I think I was expecting a peppered fillet or something (I missed the "Potted" part in the dish's name), but pleased to get a little glass pot with minced(?) mackerel and cracked pepper to spread on some dark bread. Yummy! The pork belly and chips were tasty but nothing to write home about. I didn't dislike them but the pork wasn't as flavorful as I had expected because the seasoning hadn't penetrated the meat. Again, it wasn't bad and that might have been what they were going for. When we return, I'll try the steak (I'm not big on seafood but my wife is). The chips had just the right consistency. Lastly, I had Creme Brûlée somewhere else and didn't like it because the top was burnt and I was afraid that that's how it would always taste. I ordered it at Loch Fyne just to see how well they'd do it. It was yummy. The top wasn't burnt and the custard was subtle yet delightfully smooth. I considered ordering one for take away but I was heading to a meeting at a patisserie. The Prats were OK, but we learned that we are not fans of prat. We can't blame Loch Fyne; I'm sure they tasted the way they were supposed to taste. I didn't taste the Mussels, but I was told that they were fresh and perfectly cooked. So, Loch Fyne was worth the trip. It's a short enough walk from the Bristol Temple Meads station that we might find ourselves there again. Oh, I should note though that our table was uncomfortable. It was a four-legged table for two. They're the worst! I hate having to squeeze my long legs between the two table legs and getting my knees trapped. read more

As usual, really good quality and value for money for this well located Loch Fyne by the River. Being able to see the fresh fish really feels like being in a fish market, while the whole decor is warm and welcoming. The quality of the fish, and its delicate cooking make me want to go there again and again. I can recommend the oysters, with a hint of the shallot sauce they serve it with. Exquisite. The desserts are a superb finish, being not too heavy and yet very flavoured. Very nice service (not too pushy, quite friendly), and fast (maybe due to the fact that we had an early dinner at 17h30...). I feel sorry for those who have to write a bad review of Loch Fyne, for I myself have never been disappointed by my visits there (in Norwich, London and Bristol). read more

Okay, granted I'm not a massive fan of seafood. For me to enjoy it, it really has to be fresh and cooked to perfection. So when I was taken to Lock Fyne I wasn't expecting much and sadly I was right not to. The quality of the ingredients was pretty much the level I was expecting (which isn't good). The fish pie my wife had was apalling. More of a mash pie than fish. It was barely warm too. Not good. Service was also a problem. Our waitress was pleasant enough, but each course took about 45 minutes to arrive. When the mains arrived some of the sides were missing. Loch Fyne is the place I go for an occasional treat as the menu is quite pricey. For a chain restaurant this restaurant, on the corner of Queens Square is committed to sustainable fishing and seasonal menus to ensure that all their seafood is as fresh as possible. The smoked haddock is divine, the lobster bisque is full of flavour and the oysters in white wine sauce are tasty too. A bread basket is complimentary which is handy as some course can take a while to prepare, while side dishes are classed as extras, costing between £3-£5 each, which means the price can soon mount up if you're not careful. A good way to solve this is to order a mix of side dishes and share them between your party. The only downside to all this food is that sometimes it is difficult to fit in the rich, gooey desserts too. Offers are a regular occurrence around Christmas and Easter and if you sign up to newsletters then complimentary vouchers will occasionally appear in the post. For a table of two or four you probably don't need to book during the week but at weekends I'd be sure to call up a couple of days in advance. read more

Went in for Sunday brunch, had excellent service and a superb breakfast. The staff were friendly, accommodated both out special requests without fuss. I'm a big fan of Loch Fyne in Bristol. If first discovered this place when i lived in Oxford and i've tried to come back as much as possible ever since. I can highly recommend the Sea Bass or the Moules et Frites. Layout is simple but spacious. Staff are friendly (without being over friendly) and the location is perfect (right by King street). Well, I have to say I'm not usually a fan of chain restaurants, but Loch Fyne may well have convinced me otherwise, sustainably and local(ish) ingredients and a friendly and relatively informal staff have brought me round. Having found myself with a couple of hours to kill in Bristol and a irresistible hunger for fish; just think of what joy I felt when Loch Fyne hoved into view my friends! Nestled away behind Queen's square, it sits in a lovely old building and the decor inside seems to have retained the charm of the place. I'm not sure if it was a one off, but when I arrived expecting to be parted with the majority of my wallet I was pleased to discover that they had a special on 2 courses for £10... This immediately made me like the place! I started with a dish of mussels, and you can imagine how a sense of dread overcame me when I heard the shout of "£10 special mussels" emanate from the kitchen. Luckily despite the a gritty plate of bearded shells with withered residents I was expecting, what appeared after some time was a lovely fresh and surprisingly generous bowl of beautifully cleaned and damn fat juiciness... What's more the sauce was awesome... For my main I went for a whole grilled place with garlic butter and new potatoes, still pinching myself that this was going to cost me just a tenner I dug in with gusto. The fish was perfectly cooked and beautifully fresh, whilst the tatties were a tad overcooked, all in all it was a damn fine lunch. Having demolished my first two courses I suddenly realised that I'd only spent ten quid, so thought I should probably squeeze in a little desert, one lovely pannacotta later I wobbled out into the Bristolian sunshine and the 20 minute walk to the train... Had an absolutely horrific early Mother's Day lunch on March 11th for 5 people. Food was awful - almost every dish was over cooked, food was incredibly slow to arrive and dishes came in no discernable order. We might as well have had lunch at separate restaurants. It left us having to apologize to our mother and making plans for a "make up" Mother's Day" when she returns from her holiday. The staff were nice and the manager took 25% off the bill but this was unacceptable. I wanted a full refund. I won't go back and if I could give them less than "one star" I would. read more

Oh dear, sad to see someone had a bad experience here. I had a completely different experience when I was here. I tried the oysters - I gagged on one years ago so was a bit wary but it was delicious. I opted for the mussels in thai coconut sauce and they were outstanding, really lovely mussels, sans grit that you often get in mussels. The last time I had mussels that excellent was at an expensive restaurant in Rome 4 years earlier. After giving up fish for a couple of years when I was a teenager (I blame the film Finding Nemo) I found I really missed it. I'd already given up meat after seeing the film Babe (come on, when that cute little pig is staring down the barrel of a gun it really brings it on home that we're eating little creatures) so the fish thing didn't last long. I was a teen and kept fainting and the doc suggested I reintroduce fish into my diet at least until I was 18. That was good enough for me. And ever since then I've eaten fish at least once a week. I love it. So I was overjoyed when I spotted a voucher on one of those money saving sites for Loch Fyne - two courses for a tenner. The restaurant is right on the Welsh back so perfect for a pre-drinking sesh bite to eat. I ate here last week. We arrived and were attended to and seated fairly quickly, however after that the service slowed somewhat. I had the salmon pate and oat cakes to start and it was maybe a 3 out of 5, then we had to wait a while for the mains (although it was maybe only two thirds full), after asking about them the manager went away and returned with them. My steak wasn't exactly what i would call piping hot, the chips were pretty anaemic, one of the guys i was withs scallops came out cold and had to be sent back and the other guys sole didn't get a very good review either. Overall the three of us agreed that it was disappointing and i for one wont be returning. I also thought the wine was a bit of a let down, especially at £24 (though they do cheaper). Rather bland. One positive though, if it can be called that, is that to apologise for the slow service we got a free round of drinks. However we didn't get any compensation for the poor food! read more

Food was no more than average and potions were very poor. if you are going to serve small portions of food it has to be perfect quality and this was not even close. there was nothing about the meal that would encourage me to go again or to recommend it to others. i had not heard of this place before and found out half way through the meal it was part of a big chain. Very speedy service, meals were brought out within 5/6 minutes of ordering which makes me wonder about the freshness/ quality of the ingredients. Everything was very bland and tasteless. I've visited a few Loch Fynes in my time but this wonderful old building has to take the medal for atmosphere and setting. It is situated on the corner of Queen Square stretching back to the wonderfully cobbled Welsh Back in a really stunning building. And it is fairly huge inside, although I always prefer to eat in a corner of the quieter and more intimate basement. Although it is primarily a sea-food restaurant, even for non fish-eaters like me there is a great selection of other meats and lovely veggie tarts. I eat mussels and they have weekly mussels nights where you can get one of five differently cooked mussels courses, chips and a big glass of wine for just £12.95. But my friends who are mad about fish are always spoilt for choice. And they do huge stacks for their seafood platters which have all kinds of weird and wonderful things! The staff are really friendly and bubbly, able to reel off reams of specials off the tops of their heads. And they do really reasonably priced Prosecco if you are celebrating a special occasion. A lovely location for pre-theatre drinks and mid-week meals as it doesn't get too rammed. read more
