One of the lesser known bureau's this place was established by Winston Churchill at the height of the Second World War. Originally based in London's Whitehall the job of The Sandwich Bureau was to beef up wartime morale by coming up with delicious new sandwiches which would be distributed to allied troops all over Europe by means of modified bomber planes.
Never officially disbanded the Sandwich Bureau was moved to more modest digs on Liverpool's Wood Street and began serving its delicious range of paninis, baguettes and salads. My own personal favourite has to be their filled bin-lid barm cakes which are a soft tasty treat which are probably big enough to share (although I've never offered anyone a bite). Rumour has it that these were also the favourites of Lord Churchill himself and he would often have one of these before washing it down with half a bottle of champagne and a gigantic cigar before bursting into the war room each day. read more
