Crust is a decent enough sandwich bar and delicatessen virtually next door to its main competitor…read moreButlers Bakery. Unlike Butlers though, Crust specialises less in baked goods and more in sandwiches and other café related dishes, as well as offering the other usual refreshments like coffee, tea and soft drinks. The bread they use there tastes fresh and provides a great base for the various fillings they offer there that are all made fresh daily and are generously shoved into your sandwich. The prices for a small local shop like this are reasonable enough and offer a similarly good value for money as Butlers and its location just around the corner from Maghull train station makes it a useful place to grab a sandwich before/after getting a train. There is a small area to dine inside but I generally find its better to take away unless you desperately want to sit in with your purchases.

It's the kind of place you could sit and read a book while munching a sandwich and enjoying a cup of tea while surreptitiously spying on the locals. (Something I truly enjoy!) They food is tasty, if semi plain, but that's what you generally get in a small café/sandwich shop. It's certainly nicer than a mere packaged sandwich from a grocery store. Prices are good and the staff are very friendly and polite.

But for places like David, that's just it. Food isn't just food, it's a chance to be creative and they treat it more like a piece of art than something you shove in your mouth, swallow and finish within a minute or two. At David, they do a lovely range of wedding cakes for your special day that look both delicious and ridiculously tall (just how many tiers can one cake have?), all available at competitive prices. However, their novelty cakes are what really intrigue me. A quick browse of their website reveals they do such cakes as the 'Full English' (yep, designed to look like a cooked breakfast) and a 'Deep Pan Pizza'. Such creations show both style and humour, both of which should be applauded and encouraged. David is definitely a place worth checking out, even if it's just to admire the cakes in the window.

His cakes are pure works of art. He has been a master acke maker in this little shop for about twenty years now, and I never tire of marvelling at his latest creations in the window. He produces five fight high sculptures of buildings, life size caricatures of celebrities, comic book figures, figurines from your favourite photograph. Anything is possible in this shop. David has made cakes for Posh and Becks, the Queen, and every local event there is. You must visit.

Quite why they've decided to offer sausage rolls, pies and pasties at one pound when you can usually get one for a bit less, I'm not sure; even when you do pay more than a pound for a pasty in Greggs or Sayers, it's not too much more and it's not so much more that you'd rather not pay it. Especially when their goods are generally pretty tasty and of a higher quality than here. Their selection of savouries and sweets are pretty impressive and rival the other local bakers in the area, but with Greggs and the excellent Greenhalghs just down the way from them, I'd say that Pound Bakery is a place you should go if you literally only have a pound to spend for your dinner. But then again, you can't get a drink. Or some sort of accompaniment, which we all know is imperative to your lunchtime snack.

The store that caught my attention was the Stretford Mall shop, and I decided to go there since 2 pasties for £1 seemed very reasonable. Greggs are usually £1.85 for 2 pasties, so it at least 85% cheaper than it's rival. The selection of pasties seemed very impressive, better than greggs. And 2 loafs for £1 seemed another great steal. Hot drinks are 50p each and cakes are £1, again great value all rounded to a pound or less. Overall great value for money, good selection and quality that doesn't seem to differ with greggs. It caters for everyone, not just those on a budget, like it very much!
