So imagine my delight when, just next door to my arch nemesis Greggs, I stumbled across Greenhalghs Craft Bakery in Ormskirk. This large bakery sells similar stuff to Greggs and Sayers, offering their customers an excellent selection of savoury items including sausage rolls, pasties and delicious pies as well as bread, cakes, soups and sandwiches. They also do celebration cakes that are beautifully designed as well as offering a buffet service for any special occasion you might have coming up. The shop itself is bright and clean-looking and the staff there are polite and friendly, meaning any experience in Greenhalgh's is always pleasant. Their pies in particular are perfectly crumbly and filled with good quality fillings that are always just the right temperature to enable you to quickly devour them.

After searching endlessly and fruitlessly for weeks online for someone who could make exactly what I wanted, accept payment internationally, and deliver it to my BF, I messaged Mama Bear's, and the owner is an absolute ANGEL. She worked with me to decide on exactly what to create. Even though the things I asked for aren't typically items that she makes, she told me that she was a "romantic" and would be happy to make a special order for me. She even ended up adding decorations on her own because she wanted to make it extra special! Such a lovely person to work with!!! Her husband hand-delivered the cake & chocolate-covered strawberries to my boyfriend on our anniversary and even passed along a special message. My boyfriend was totally surprised and absolutely impressed with the presentation of the gift itself. He also said that the cake and strawberries were incredibly DELICIOUS!!! He really tried to ration them out to last longer, but they were so good he couldn't help eating them within about a week and a half haha. Mama Bear is the greatest, and if you live in the area, you should DEFINITELY choose her shop! I'd be there for coffee and baked goods daily if I didn't live across the pond! haha.

Not only does it sell the most delicious cakes and pastries - but it also seels the cakes and pastries that other shops long ago stopped making! The range covers apple danish slices (my own personal favourite), to lemon meringue pie slices, carrot cake, chocolate muffins, malteser crunch cakes and their speciality Dickson Road cakes, invented 60 years ago for the daughter of the family. The savoury pies, pasties and sandwiches are all incredible. They use the absolute BEST ingredients and as somebody who will not eat meat products for fear of finding a bit of gristle, you should see me wolf down their sausage rolls and lamb hotpot! The hotpot is available in single portions, 6 person trays or 10 person trays and can be bought hot or taken home and oven baked. They also do incredible cakes (at short notice too!) for any event you can think of. Their home delivery party/buffet service has an extensive menu and is always delivered on time and with a happy, smiling face. Not only do they provide plastic cutlery free of charge but also paper tablecloths, napkins and even a binbag to clear up afterwards! We spoke to the baker and he told us it was all part of the same business, the bakers and the cheese shop and the bakery had outgrown the building and was soon to be moving a mile or two up the road. Anyhow, we walked through the front door and were amazed at the wonderful display of freshly baked breads available to buy. From super open textured, crunchy baguettes to heavy sourdough and super soft farmhouse loaves, stilton and walnut bread, oily foccaccia and on and on. There was also a small selection of sweets such as really nutty brownies, pain au chocolat and danish. Everything looked so good, it took us forever to narrow down our choices. We ended up buying four loaves of bread and two cakes. All were beautiful and very tasty which is a big lack in most of today's crappy supermarket breads which people have become accustomed. My favourite was the baguette, it really was out of this world. The breads were a little pricey but WELL worth it. And the place is definetly worth a visit!

So imagine my shock/delight when I visited the lovely Dutch Bakery in Birkdale and found that not only do they do a fair bit of baking, but it's delicious too. This cosy little shop just outside of the immediate village area offers a great selection of freshly baked pastries and cakes at an excellent price. Using home grown and local ingredients, each delicacy available there will have any sweet-toothed individual overdosing on sugar with unnerving regularity. There is also a fine selection of savoury treats for those of you with less of a desire for sugar and these are of a similar great quality, meaning the Dutch Bakery is definitely one to visit if you're in the area.
