Satterthwaites was founded one hundred years ago in Liverpool, it has remained a Liverpool based store but popularity has encouraged growth in the area and I think there are around six further stores, four in the Crosby/ Waterloo area. Satterthwaites are extremely popular in the area and well known amongst non-locals too! The food is extremely good, and of course the type of food sold- stodgy savouries: pies; pasties; sausage rolls, and cakes- is irresitable and undeniably popular generally, however I think the popularity of this store is through the unmistakeable element of tradition Satterthwaites has managed to preserve; the cakes are classics: bavarian slices, carrot cakes, meringues, while the old fashioned uniforms are unique to Satterthwaites: hair nets and hats are worn as well as gloves which is nice to see. The staff are always very sociable and friendly and the food is really satisfying: tasty, filling, and reasonably priced. Satterthwaites offer catering services also: finger buffets, cake selections and even fruit platters. This is a popular caterers in the area hired for weddings and all sorts of parties.

As Ryan H points out, it's the only place in the local area to get a pasty, pie or bakerie item without heading into the Town Centre and so it's very convenient and accessible for a quick lunch. As a fairly large chain, I'm sure you are aware of Sayers, what they offer and the quality there. It's not the best pasty you'll ever have and not a patch on Carr's but it certainly fills a need when craving hits!

At the back of the store, there's a small deli counter that stocks fresh cheese, parma ham, pasta and other delicacies, a luxury wine and champagne counter, a tiny bakery section with freshly baked bread and a wee grocery section selling organic fruit and veg. First impressions were of a really cool place to hangout (seating for about 20), with an atmosphere and decor that wouldn't be out of place in the Northern Quarter or Didsbury. I got chatting to the girl behind the counter who was very knowledgable of their product range and after myself umming, arrhing and probably over thinking it went for their pie of the week - the pulled chicken balti pie. At £3 for a pie that you'd definitely need to share it was super tasty from first to last bite (lots of meat, good range of veg and a lovely crusty pie case) and good value along with it. I can't wait to go back and try their standard range of pies, see what their next pie of the week is and even give the Stockport pie a go - basically posh meat and potato! There are a variety of hot pies on offer - steak, meat and potato, chicken and mushroom... plus some cold whist and pork pies. There's also a small selection of cakes and sweet things too. The pies are baked here on site (Bowen's bakery is in the rear) so you won't get fresher than this. The other big win here is that you can find that particularly local delicacy, the butter pie, which most folks won't have heard of if they didn't grow up within spitting distance of Preston. I love a butter pie, and whilst I've never found one which matches the ones I had in the 1980s, these are a pretty close match. Parking right outside, cheap prices and lovely photos of Chorley in days gone by on the walls. Not suitable for vegetarians or dieters, but plenty of Lancashire fayre to put a smile on your face.
