Casa Italia - Bruschetta Tricolor

We went there after typical lunching hours and found the place still pretty busy with folks cycling in and out. I heard that the line goes out the door at dinner, so I figured we'd try it out. The huge pane glass window allows ambient light in, then it's classically lit on the inside with yellow lighting to give that Lady and the Tramp effect. :) I ordered one of the daily specials, Risotto Italia, that had diced chicken, slices of ham, onions, mushrooms all in tomato sauce. It was fine, but a little heavy on the sauce. The sauce was good, but it buried the risotto. My dish wasn't nearly as good as Liz's Tortellini Italiana, which came in a meat sauce under baked cheese. The consistency of the crusting cheese was great, and the meat sauce was generous with the meat. We also tried the Bruschetta Tricolor which was a great balance of a caprese salad over a fresh bread and pesto... it was really good. I really enjoyed by visit to Casa Italia. It was very well priced, and I can see why its popular. You get a lot for a little... even with the picodillo (small) portions. Reservations need only be made for groups greater than 6. Give 'er a try!

Crust is a relatively new restaurant in Liverpool, located on Bold Street, it is in the city centre…read moreand very close to Liverpool Central Station. The entrance to Crust is accessed through a large step and they have no ramps, but the staff assisted with my enterance and they seemed really friendly, wanting to get me in. The menu choice in terms of pizzas was a little poor, to have a range of more basic pizzas such as pepperoni or even a garlic pizza bread. The selection of other foods was decent, however labelling the whole menu could have been better for allergies with gluten-free markings rather than just the pizzas. I was impressed with the fact they do fresh flavoured lemonades with different fruit and flavourings, and although the bottom was a little bland, I did enjoy my mango and passionfruit lemonade which was obviously made fresh, with real fruits at £3.50. For my pizza I ordered a Margarita, the staff cut this up for me and the base was good quality, once again fresh and seasoned well. It would have been nice with more toppings, a better range, however. I did struggle to get a staff members attention during the meal, although all staff (including the manager) seemed nice and very friendly, after being given mayo and tomato sachets I just had to use my own, which is one of the reasons I always bring ketchup and mayo when I go out. The chips were a little bland, but the oil at the bottom made them slightly better, they were once again flaws. Crust is a nice restaurant in Liverpool with competitive pricing and a good gluten-free pizza bases, the main issues being getting into the restaurant, the menu and getting a staff member's attention during my meal but due to good quality, freshness of the food and friendly staff, I would feel a four-star rating is appropriate. UPDATE: Due to an awful recent in-store experience in store, where I was given a pizza containing gluten at first, despite requesting a gluten free one, after already a long wait, after I noticed this and alerted my server, my confidence here went downhill and sadly that was shown in the quality of my second pizza, the base was poor and doughy, the ham was chewy and the whole pizza from base to toppings was sadly a poor, awful mess. With a lack of promotions which larger chains has, this just makes this a place with high-end places for abysmal food, sadly warranting a one-star rating as good (yet overpriced) lemonade can't make up for the "speciality" of this place with the pizzas being so bad, even my friend who isn't gluten free was upset with his chicken pizza.

Of course, people walking around in their pyjamas is a natural occurrence in Liverpool - it was probably stranger because I didn't have curlers in! Anyway, always on hand to provide a quick snack to those in need, Pizza Pronto does exactly what it says on the tin - gives you food fast. After the disappointment of missing out on the free BBQ at Peacock, for example, I was happily munching on a chicken burger within 10 minutes, and that includes walking between the two. And don't worry about undercooked food - I eat there and there's nothing wrong with me....

This doesn't mean that it's not good here (it really is) just that American Pizza Slice is very, very good. What works in Pizza Pronto's favour is the price of the slice - just £1.50 a pop. A must if you need a snack on the move around these here parts. Of a night time it all changes gear a bit and Pizza Pronto turns kebab shop, it's still good but like any kebab shop the food is a little sloppily done and the pizza isn't nearly as good, even though you end up getting far more of it. I don't want loads of pizza though, just a little bit of good pizza. That's my drunken lament as I wheel my way unsteadily down towards the taxi rank at the bottom of Bold Street hill.

I'm usually a regular at the Albert Dock branch because it's more convenient for me, but I do really like this branch. It's located inside an old bank, which makes you feel like you're getting a side of heritage with your pizza. However, as an addict, I would give up the heritage for aside of garlic dough balls! Obviously, the menu is the same in every Pizza Express but if you're a virgin (unlucky you) I'll advise you on my favourites. Here goes: for a starter I would get the dough balls every time - boring maybe but that way you get some yumminess but still have room for the next two courses! Gem (another Pizza Express addict - maybe they should start up rehabilitation?!!) would always, without fail, pick the bruschetta, which does look delicious but I'm not a huge fan of tomatoes. For the main, we would both have Pollo de Astra on the Romana base (a fancy term for extra extra thin).... it is literally heaven on a 14" plate. Admittedly, I've only had dessert once due to the excess gorging on the starter and the main - once we managed to squeeze in a chocolate fudge sundae type thing which really did finish me off. It was worth it though. Note: if you're going out with a group, or even the two of you, always check the internet for vouchers as you can often get 50% off, or main meals for £1 etc. which really makes a difference to your bank balance!
