I've tried pupusa restaurants in every city…read moreI've lived in, ordered from countless Facebook Marketplace vendors, and whenever I see pupusas on a menu, I have to order at least one mixed pupusa. I came across La Esperanza while looking up the phone number for my usual spot in Vallejo and decided to give them a try. They're located in American Canyon in the Lola's Market plaza, next to the pho restaurant. We arrived around 4 PM on a weekday, and there were only about three occupied tables. Although staff saw us come in, no one greeted us. After waiting a few minutes, I finally asked if we could sit anywhere. We were seated near the door and received menus shortly afterward. A gentleman came over to take our order and asked if we wanted water. We waited about 20 minutes, possibly longer, for our food. Unfortunately, our water never arrived, and our order came out incorrectly. We ordered six pupusas but only received four. Nobody explained which pupusas were which, so we ended up accidentally eating each other's food. As for the food itself, I wasn't impressed. The pupusas were much too soft and mushy for my taste. The beans were chunky, which is something I've never experienced before in a pupusa. Having eaten pupusas from countless places over the years, I know there are much better options out there. Overall, I won't be returning. The prices are high for what you receive, and the poor service made the experience even more disappointing. Eating out and supporting local businesses is already expensive, and when both the food and service fall short, it's hard to justify coming back.

I came in around 4pm during their week-long $2 taco special, so it was pretty busy. The lobby is a bit small, but they have a decent-sized parking lot along with street parking. They also have an outdoor eating area with a few benches and a covered top, which I really like! Like I mentioned, the lobby is on the smaller side, but I think it works perfectly for their walk-up-and-order style of service. The decor is simple but still has a fun and lively feel to it. Their menu has a good variety, just like their food truck--and maybe even more? I could be wrong. LOL. The staff was super nice, and they seemed pretty quick with getting everyone's orders out, especially considering how busy they were. The one thing I think they could improve is adding some type of shade or pull-down window covering to block out the sun, and maybe some A/C if they don't already have it. The sun was BEAMING directly into the lobby, and since the space is already pretty small, it got quite hot inside while we waited to order and for our food to come out. Definitely something that would make waiting inside a lot more comfortable, especially on warmer days. Overall, the food was good per usual, and I'm happy to see Taqueria El Pelayo now has a brick-and-mortar location! I definitely look forward to coming back for more good eats.

We both had long days at work so he stopped by on his way home to grab dinner. Recently my go-to has been their crunchy asada tacos so he grabbed me two of them, and confirmed that he wanted everything on them (cheese, onion and cilantro). When he got home we saw that my tacos were plain- not what he ordered. He called them to let them know of the issue and they told him that he could get drive the 15 minutes back to the truck and pick up sides of onion and cilantro. Bringing the tacos that they messed up on and getting it replaced with a fresh correct order was not an option. THEY didn't make the tacos as advertised/ordered, and their solution to fixing the error THAT THEY MADE was for the customer to drive back to the truck to get the toppings that THEY forgot. After using gas and spending time going back to the truck for the toppings, they then expected us drive back home and sprinkle them on cold old tacos. Keep in mind that these tacos are six dollars each. To add more insult to injury they cut costs by skimping on the cheese. This is a dish that I've ordered quite a few times so I know how it usually looks. This time around it looks like they sprinkled it on the corner of one of the tacos to give that melted/crusty cheese look, but there was barely any inside. He said there were people working that he hadn't seen there before so I'm not sure if that's what's contributing to the piss poor service, but whatever the case the solution that they gave for an error that they made is ridiculous.

I love the "cabeza" as my meat in their tacos. It takes like a prime rib with the flavorful fat attached to it. The portion of the meat is ok, it could be more, but you could pay for extra meat. The food truck is parked by the Grocery Outlet parking lot, it seems sketchy but just go during the day if you're not comfortable being at the area. The speed of their service is good and friendly people. They take cards which helps people who don't carry cash.

The line was considerably long around 7:30 p.m. so it took a while for us to order and receive our food. I like that the tacos here are single tortilla -- as opposed to double tortillas, so the filling to tortilla ratio feels a lot more balanced. For both tacos, the meat is incredibly tender and flavorful. Although a bunch of sauces and garnishes are provided, the taco was good enough on its own. Of the sauces we received, my favorites to add was a squeeze of lime and the red sauce, which had a nice smokey Chipotle flavor and wasn't overly spicy. My friend ordered a quesadilla and it was absolutely massive! I definitely would only recommending ordering a quesadilla if you're sharing it, or if you're coming with a massive appetite. Overall, Tacos El Sazón Oaxaqueño was a nice gem we randomly stumbled upon while routing to In-N-Out for burgers. Between the two, I would certainly save my stomach space for tacos from Tacos El Sazón Oaxaqueño next time.
