Went here yesterday and I thought the food was great tasting. The service was alright but not great. The place seemed clean and tidy. The cook took our orders and he got my friends food wrong. But he said he would make another taco correct for him. It was the only thing we ate yesterday. Then my buddy told me he got explosive diarrhea from the food. Said it was the food he made. I just moved to Vallejo and I was trying to find a Mexican grocery store to shop. When I entered the employees were sitting down in a circle gossiping and they were not welcoming at all. They look like they were annoyed to see people interrupt their chisme time. Everything was overpriced and I ended up paying $80 for a few items. We tried the pan dulce and the pan dulce had no flavor. I've been coming here periodically when I'm craving Mexican food and I don't want to drive all that far. Today was the worst days I have gotten in service. I wanted to take my brother out for food and when we got here I ordered carne asada fries and a horchata. When I got to ordering the horchata the server asked me if I wanted ice and I couldn't hear well because of the loud fan in the kitchen and I asked him to repeat it politely and he said ice, which I heard rice and I just said yes because I didn't want to make it a big deal. The server goes "oh my god" and rolls his eyes and points at the ice. I say yes for the second time. Then he goes on to talking to his coworker calling me a "pendejo" and yes I know what that means, just because I'm Asian doesn't mean I don't understand bad words of a different language. Anyways after he talks to his coworker on the side he tells me to wait for the food and I say ok thank you. I'm very observant and I can see he turns on the fryer for my fries. Right there I already knew it wasn't going to be that good because I know what happens if you throw fries into oil not fully heated. Onto my review of the food. The horchata is always the best I sometimes come here to order the horchata only. The carne asada fries however could be improved. The fries were very oily and not crispy at all, a bit cold actually. And I've had better steak. Never ordering food here again. Rude customer service and I know cheaper places to get quality Mexican food with no attitude. Please do not order food from Vargas Market. I've been to this place twice already and the customer service is terrible. I always see flies buzzing around the food which is very unsanitary. The workers do not wear masks or gloves. They also speak very quietly and are hard to understand because of all the cars driving by and the food cooking inside. When you can't hear them, they get angry and make snarky comments behind your back. I once heard one worker call me a "puto pendejo". Although I don't speak Spanish, I have enough knowledge to understand that these are bad words. read more

Local market across from McDonalds and near a succession of other small businesses. I utilize this market primarily for perishable items that run out in between my larger grocery shop. Tomatoes, avocados, lettuce, cabbage and bananas. The produce department does a great job of restocking these items but occasionally leave some out to long which are to ripe. This is primarily a Hispanic staff and customer base, but I've been greeted with smiles and great service from my first visit. I also enjoy trying some of the different foods and desserts that I don't see in traditional markets. I will continue to use and recommend this location. read more

I mostly go here for their JM Taqueria. They have great food, selection and friendly service. Got a chicharon and asada burrito, both with no beans. The chicharon were a bit chunky, could have been crushed a little bit smaller. Service is alright. One of Mexican hot spots out here in Vallejo. There's also a Glacier refilling station outside which is mostly busy. Sometimes, there's homeless outside the store which drives away customers from coming in. I hope the market is aware of that. read more

In addition, they have their own taqueria&dining area, albeit one in competition with a food truck parked nearby&Jalapeno's restaurant. Back in the day, Vargas Market was rather shabby. Its exterior was sketchy&its interior was dirtier. Over the years, they've done some necessary renovations&cleanup. It has its own small, awkward parking lot, tho one might be able to be in the larger one nearby (?) They carry everyday items for cheap. If you need stain remover, fabric softener, detergent, paper towels, toilet paper&soap, they've got it. They have an enormous selection of chips&sodas, convenience foods. Vargas has improved over the years. They used to look like a shady convenience store, now they're a legit mini-mart with a taqueria. Clean, cheap, appealing. read more

Had a long day and got off work late last night so I figured I'd check out this store since it was around the corner from the house. Little did I notice, the milk had no expiration date, it was open and chunky. I should've seen the red flag when this was the only milk in the fridge. Didn't notice til I got home and they were closed. No way I would even think about giving this to my son! Returned it for a refund, they didn't even question it. I've been coming here for a long time the food is pretty good, usually very accomadating..The guys in the kitchen gave me hot sauce i asked for extra. When i got to the register the lady gets mad at me because they didn't write down correctly how many sauces i had. Im sorry but i didn't write my own ticket..I asked for sauce im a customer..If you needed to charge me for extra hot sauce, no problem at all. But don't get mad at me for it.. Otherwise Vargas Market has a great meat case and food in back of store...Love the Carnitas..The cash register lady is usually much nicer..FYI. you don't get to treat customers like that. Just say "Oh I see they have you extra sauce, we charge extra for that ok?" Much nicer way to deliver that message, and I would have gladly paid for it.. read more

Good spot for picking up a quick bite! Prices are decent and the portions are huge. In addition the the carne asada burrito, my kids and I ordered their nachos, quesadillas and carne asada fries. Got so much food that we forgot to order the chicharron quesadilla. Yes, you read that right. Chicharron quesadilla! Yum! The food is good BUT could be more consistent in terms of flavor. Vargas Market has a small grocery in the middle of the store. at the back is the tacqueria and fresh meat market. aqua fresca looked cheap(1.99) but they were out. spotted al pastor on a spit. went for that. eats al pastor burrito (4.99) -meat on the dry side, chili pieces in burrito, making it spicy. -had some rice, beans too -burrito just average tasting. leftovers: -heavy traffic on 29, returning to freeway took some time. -no more burritos here. taste issue. -adequate parking in lot. read more

On a whim I stopped in for some supplies for a BBQ. The Butcher was very cool and helpful. I purchased a few meats and some queso fresco and guacamole. Everything was great except the guacamole. I took the star off for the runny flavor lacking Guac. Both cashiers were very friendly and chatty. This small store is a one stop shop as they have many day to day items. Horrible- the cashiers have the worst customer service. One of the ladies reached over me, talking to another customer while I was trying to pay. Did not say excuse me she just carried on with the conversation and helped the other lady first. Just rude! Vargas Market is my neighborhood go-to taqueria. I have tried a variety of super burritos, and loved them all. My favorite burrito isn't on the menu, but basically the fajita fixin's in a tortilla - delish! The carne asada fries are a nice little treat, but not cheap. And be fore-warned, if the fryer is not already heated up, they take about 20 minutes to make. The chips and salsa are great, although I wish they would fill up the bag with their chips and fill up the salsa cups (sometimes they do, and sometimes they get skimpy.) Overall, this place is good - it will hit the spot for some true Mexican food. read more

(Review based on the taqueria) I was about to hit up La Iguana, but decided to go here and give the food a shot. Ohhhh man, all I gotta say is SUPER TACO. I simply LOVE mexican/south/central american fare, but since i'm somewhat dieting, I limit myself to corn tortillas. So that means no burritos or super delicious super burritos for me =[ Usually, that only leaves me with the paltry option of tacos. Not that there's anything wrong with authentic tacos... they're just... kinda small. However, featured here is the super taco. Plenty of meat and salsa BUT they go and add creama and queso... and oh man, it's a filling little piece of art. I literally just ate there, but I am still drooling over the thought of it. The meat was just so flavorful. Even more so than many places I've been to across this great state. Whatever they use for marinade is complete and utter DINERO EN LA BANCO! It's really that good. Also had corn quesadillas. This is really the first place i've been to where you can get corn quesadillas. These are really good as well, they're mini quesadillas and the order comes with 3. Again, you get the flavorful meat here and cheese. It's a simple combination, but it does the trick. Some nice fill 'er up kinda food right here. I wish there was a place to sit down and eat, but oh well. That's more of a personal gripe than anything else. If you're in Vallejo and hankering for some muy (which spelled backwards it yum, which is about right) delicioso comida, be sure to give Vargas Market a visit. You will not be disappointed. The taqueria is what most of the posters seem to rave about here. It's really good, I agree, but the produce and butcher area here is where it's at! Pomegranates, kiwi, cactus, chilis, cheap oranges, cucumbers... the real deal. I don't know if it's cert organic, but it definitely tastes fresher than the "organic" stuff at Safeway and isn't nearly as expensive or self-righteous as Whole Foods. The butcher is super friendly and bi-lingual, so you know what you're getting and how much you're paying. They have other market stuff here, as well. I would give it more stars if it was bigger. But, I suppose if it was, it would be more like Mi Pueblo, which is more of a Latin Safeway, anyway. read more

I would buy beef stew meat and other products to make traditional Puerto Rican foods, such as "empanadas" when I was a cook at a local restaurant. In the past, the butcher was very accommodating and helpful. That person apparently is no longer employed there. The butchers who attempted to help today had no idea what beef stew is, even when I explained in Spanish what I need it for. I was appalled when they responded, "You need to go to Safeway because we service for Mexican foods, not Puerto Rican or American." As a Latina, I was surprised that another Hispanic would be so condescending. I am definitely boycotting this place, and am spreading this incident to my friends in the community. So... I'll admit I have only eaten tacos from here once, after the had their reopening... but I found them to be mediocre, so I plan to give them another run soon. What IS wonderfully great, however, is the Pico de Gallo from the meat/service counter. For a little more than $4, I got a pint-sized container of the most yum-a-licious pico East of the Carquinez... Seriously. It was just spicy enough and paired great with my fav tortilla chips in a bag- Tostitos Lime. Trust me, try it! So, while my taste buds must wait 'til another day to fall in love with the taqueria, I'm absolutely sold on the pico. YUM! read more

My fave Vallejo joint (b/c it's so close by) to go to for my Mexican fixings. Asada is great .. Helped them get on the band wagon with the asada fries .. A bit over priced, and they don't put as much "fixins" as other Mexican restaurants that also have asada fries. The "new" place is a come up, then where they were (closer to the back of the plaza), but it's a good place. They're quick and most of the time they're friendly. I find that calling in an order for pick up is sometimes a hassle b/c of the language barrier but other than that .. great place, great people. read more

POOR customer service!!! I stopped in tonight to get my sons a burrito. I waited in line to place my order and neither of the two men behind the counter acknowledged or said a word to me. Finally when two other men walked up, he started to take their order and again did not acknowledged me nor my son. I spoke up and said "I was here first". Then the second man stepped back and I ordered. No smile, no comments at all from this guy. I stepped away to gather other things and came back to a bag on the counter. I asked is this mine? He turned his back and I had to repeat myself. I speak Spanish so Im not sure what the problem was. Very POOR customer service!!! Love the fact that this place is both a grocery & a little taqueria! It is super cute & the owners are always so nice. Not once have i been disappointed when ordering the carne asada fries. HANDS DOWN this is the place to get them at. They also have a meat section is you just want your meat butchered. And if you're still hungry, in the same plaza there's always a couple nice guys selling corn and fresh fruits in their little vendors. read more

This is not the most sanitary place but that's OK by me. I did take a pass on the mexican breads because the case was filled with gnats. However, the tacos were delicious! The meat was not the best quality but the spiciness and taste was excellent and the price was right. I got an al pastor and a carnitas. Both were extremely tasty. I would almost give the tacos 4 stars. I'm on a taco tasting tour so I may come back and upgrade them depending on the rest of my tastings :-) read more

Alright, forget the fact that this is a market. I was only concerned about their taqueria. I consider myself a burrito connoisseur, and let me tell you, I've consumed many a burrito all throughout the great state of California and I must say Vargas Market's burrito is currently my favorite. It's not the greatest, (that title goes to the burrito at Vasquez Market on the corner of Broadway and Nebraska, next to the gas station. It's no longer there, but it was the GREATEST!!! If you're out there Senor Vasquez, I miss you man!!!) but it comes pretty close. What's key to me is the flavor of the meat. I usually get my burritos with carne asada and the meat in this thing is pretty damn flavorful and tasty. Their super burrito comes with all the usual trimmings like cheese, sour cream, beans, rice, pico de gallo, but the flavor in the meat is what makes this burrito the business!!! When I'm hella hungry, I'm salivating while I'm driving to Vargas Market. I'm salivating while I'm waiting for my order and I'm even salivating after every bite I take of this burrito. This has been our go to spot for local Mexican food. The nachos are by far our favorite order. My daughter usually gets the El Pastor burrito. She loves the spiciness. My son is pretty easy and get the four cheese corn quesadilla. Also when I'm making pork jerky their meat selection is great. We just get the pre-marinaded pork. We almost always pick up some extra meat to cook for breakfast, and the sour cream and guacamole are great! The service is great and super friendly! Love this place! read more

We stopped here after going through mad traffic in Berkeley heading up to Napa Valley. With the ritzy restaurants in Napa, we decided to try some local flavors at this marketplace. I picked up some traditional Mexican pastries and bread. My dad sneaked into the back grill for a wide selection of burritos, tacos, etc. His eyes lit up when the words- chimichanga appeared on the wall menu. Yeah, pretty much the impregnated burrito stuffed with wild rice and beans and choice of meat- steak throw into a deep frier. I didn't think much of it but my dad was keen on getting it while my mom roamed around in the supermarket aisle. It was 10:30 and a bit early for lunch so we got it to-go. As we left my dad wanted to sneak a bite, but my mom's disappointing stare and scolding jaw quickly jolted my dad. Yeah, it was a hilarious ride up to Napa as we smelled that chimichanga in the car. After Sterling vineyard visit, we came back to an amazing but cold chimichanga. Yeah, dad was right about eating it hot but mom had the upper hand. Ha, ha, ha, ha... A few days later, I tried the pastries with my sister when we all got back to her place near San Jose. Here's what's happening with me and taquerias... I grew up in Southern California. A place where a good taco a decent taco and or burrito is just around every corner. The burritos have four main ingredients in Southern California. Meat, cheese, pico de gallo and guacamole. That's it! After living in Northern California for the past 5 years, I've recently come to the conclusion that I need to start to understand this rice and beans inside of my Carnitas burrito "travesty". What I've come up with is that there needs to be a balance of ingredients. Most taqueria s I've been to up here load their burritos with so much subpar rice and beans that even if their meat is tasty, there's so little of it inside the burrito that you don't even get to enjoy it. This has actually become an obsession of mine to the point that I've devised a process to judge/rate the taquerias in Northern California. 1) order a taco and test the meat and salsas. 2) if the meat has good flavors I order a burrito and hope they don't screw it up "the balance". Lol Deep sigh**** I could go on and on about this issue but this is my review for las Vargas taqueria that has an excellent balance of ingredients with great flavors. Wanted to give this place another chance since i was in the area and they failed again! I noticed they have flat screen menus never noticed that before fancy I guess. So after trying to flag down one of the cooks to take my order because they will not ask to help you. I asked for the papas fritas con asada. Not sure if I said it right but the order taker had no idea what I was talking about so I asked for steak fries after he yelled and asked what do you want burrito, taco? I said steak fries he told me to hold on, and went to go talk to the other cook, at this point I'm like screw it I'm done.
