    Horchata and carne asada fries
    Timothy F.

I've been coming here periodically when I'm craving Mexican food and I don't want to drive all that far. Today was the worst days I have gotten in service. I wanted to take my brother out for food and when we got here I ordered carne asada fries and a horchata. When I got to ordering the horchata the server asked me if I wanted ice and I couldn't hear well because of the loud fan in the kitchen and I asked him to repeat it politely and he said ice, which I heard rice and I just said yes because I didn't want to make it a big deal. The server goes "oh my god" and rolls his eyes and points at the ice. I say yes for the second time. Then he goes on to talking to his coworker calling me a "pendejo" and yes I know what that means, just because I'm Asian doesn't mean I don't understand bad words of a different language. Anyways after he talks to his coworker on the side he tells me to wait for the food and I say ok thank you. I'm very observant and I can see he turns on the fryer for my fries. Right there I already knew it wasn't going to be that good because I know what happens if you throw fries into oil not fully heated. Onto my review of the food. The horchata is always the best I sometimes come here to order the horchata only. The carne asada fries however could be improved. The fries were very oily and not crispy at all, a bit cold actually. And I've had better steak. Never ordering food here again. Rude customer service and I know cheaper places to get quality Mexican food with no attitude. Patience here definitely needs to be checked.

    Fly eggs !!!!

I ordered Chicharron from Vargas for my kids and I. My kids took a few bites , I took a few bites , and when I went to take my next bite , I noticed this !!! Are you freaking kidding me ???? Disgusting!!!!! Fly eggs !!!!!

The bag with the meat in it.

My day was long so I decided to go get some meat for the family. But when I started to cook it I seen some rotten meat and it had a smell to it also. Very disappointed on the money I spent and than I went back like 20 minutes later. They closed and on yelp it says it's open until 9pm? I don't know but seems real suspicious that you closed early today after I left. I want my money back so I'm coming back to return your old meat.

I mostly go here for their JM Taqueria. They have great food, selection and friendly service. Got a chicharon and asada burrito, both with no beans. The chicharon were a bit chunky, could have been crushed a little bit smaller. Service is alright. One of Mexican hot spots out here in Vallejo. There's also a Glacier refilling station outside which is mostly busy. Sometimes, there's homeless outside the store which drives away customers from coming in. I hope the market is aware of that.

    Disgusting.

Had a long day and got off work late last night so I figured I'd check out this store since it was around the corner from the house. Little did I notice, the milk had no expiration date, it was open and chunky. I should've seen the red flag when this was the only milk in the fridge. Didn't notice til I got home and they were closed. No way I would even think about giving this to my son! Returned it for a refund, they didn't even question it. Make sure to check for expiration dates!

    Carne Asada Nachos

Good spot for picking up a quick bite! Prices are decent and the portions are huge. In addition the the carne asada burrito, my kids and I ordered their nachos, quesadillas and carne asada fries. Got so much food that we forgot to order the chicharron quesadilla. Yes, you read that right. Chicharron quesadilla! Yum! The food is good BUT could be more consistent in terms of flavor. However, I do love how they top the nachos and carne asada fries with huge slices of jalapenos! Will definitely come back for more...

Good service and good meats. Not a fan of the burritos but the chicharrones are very good per my wife. I would buy my burrito elsewhere.

He even told us to stop back by before we headed home because he was making homemade focaccia. We came back, and he wasn't there, but he had the focaccia waiting for us anyway. That small gesture says everything about the kind of person he is. We left with jerky, his amazing garlic horseradish mustard, and summer sausage, and we already can't wait to come back. Next stop will definitely be his deli. Angelo is the real deal, kind, thoughtful, and unforgettable.

The jerky was truly the highlight. The employee let us try all of the jerky samples (generous portions) we wanted, and talked about what kinds of flavors and textures would be best for our tastes. My favorites were the teriyaki turkey jerky and garlic beef jerky. Both varieties have a sweet, tender chew. No dried out jerky here. Make sure to check out the grab and go refrigerators opposite of the cash register. I made sure to grab a bag of smoked bacon ends/chunks which made an absolutely divine addition to my cherry tomato and Marin French Cheese angel hair pasta a few nights later.

Glad we were able to track them down cause their sandwiches look so basic in pics but are so darn good. Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

For the leg of lamb, I think most people get a whole leg of lamb. That was way too much for me and I think the butcher thought I was confused when I asked for less and asked me what I was doing with it. He ended up saying he could give me a half leg of lamb and I agreed. Thar was about 3 and a half pounds (bone included) which was the perfect amount. I seared it and then braised it and the meat fell off the bone. Delicious and the price was pretty good. I was cooking my first pork chop and decided to come here to get it. Their pork isn't labeled as Berkshire or Duroc or anything but that probably keeps the price down. For chops, they had boneless, bone in, and double cut (which was also bone in). I mentioned I wanted it to be about 2 inches thick and the butcher said to get the double cut.I got 2 beautiful thick pork chops for $6.99 a pound so about $18 total. The regular cut bone in pork chops were the same price though obviously smaller. I brined this overnight and reverse seared it and it was great. The chop was a loin chop- loin and then a tenderloin nugget- not a pure rib chop. Cooked really nicely and was tender which I think was partially the overnight brine and also their pork. They do sell some vegetables and grocery supplies if you want to just make a single stop. They also have a deli with some sandwiches that looked good and prepared foods. I was very focused on buying the things I came in for and getting on with my day both times but I would like to take a closer look in the future as it looked good. Solid butcher shop and clearly loved since it was busy both on a weekend and during the week. I'm sure I will be back.
