Very clean and friendly. Plenty of parking. I stopped in for a cup of coffee and saw that they had a full case of warm breakfast food. I chose a breakfast sandwich. Which was still hot. Everyone was friendly and engaging. I had a very pleasant conversation with a gentleman who worked there regarding my car. If you change the surroundings, you'd think you were at a small town general store where every knew everyone else. Definitely will continue to return in my trips in to Portland! read more

Good selection of snacks but we came here for the 24hr pizza at around 3:30AM. They didn't have any pizza or any hot food at all besides 2 old looking baskets of chicken strips. If you are desperate for a lobster roll before you fly out of Portland this can work. But if you have a spare 30 minutes probably choose elsewhere. They picnic tables outside are nice and the price is reasonable but there are so many better options if you have time. read more

Compared to any other large gas station/convenience store that I've been to in the Portland area, this is an easy five stars. The Irving station/Rusty Lantern recently opened on Congress Street by Unum, and it is definitely not your usual gas station. Think Kamasouptra soup, Coffee by Design coffee, a whole back room for craft beer, a thoughtful selection of wine, etc. There's a lengthy menu of made-to-order sandwiches and meals in addition to many grab-and-go items. It's a huge, clean building that is leagues above the usual "Circle K" type store. For employees in the Unum or Mall area, this is a great addition for a quick lunch. read more

When is the last time you saw someone emptying trash, filling window cleaner. Wiping down fuel pumps at a gas station? All the time here. Not just that but the bathrooms... spotless. Now on to the food. Breakfast sandwiches are a must on the way to work... got'em and they're good. Strawberry smoothie with it? Yep. Great selection of snacks. And for goodness sake real coffee from CB design not that dunkin water. AND you can sit for a minute at a nice clean table or counter. On top of it all the employees are friendly and hard working ! I stop in at least twice a week on Congress Street and have been to the one Lisbon and had similar thoughts. I think this is a well run local company ( not Irving). Wow!!! Best little market/gas station I have ever been too! The food is so good that I know a couple who had their anniversary dinner there when the wait at Olive Garden was to long... here are 100 other restaurants near by but the food at the Rusty Lantern Market is AMAZING!!! It isn't gas station food... It's top of the line restaurant food. Lots of parking, drink selections, alcohol selections, an awesome manager, clean bathrooms and like I said before the BEST FOOD! When is the last time you were at a gas station where the trash cans were not over flowing with trash? I have never seen over filled trash cans at that Irving station. It's my 1st pick for a gas station in all of Portland/South Portland.. I seen someone said it was expensive in another review. There are some places you might find some things slightly cheaper. It's pretty much at par with other places BUT the items that seem "pricey" are unlike anything you will get anywhere else! Plus you get what you pay for and you get your money's worth. One of their salads is 3 meals for me because they pack so much in one of those containers. Not many people can finish one of those salads in one sitting. Get money than one dressing because those veggies are crammed in there pretty tight and you will need it! Don't miss out! Give it a try... You will not regret it. I bet it will become your favorite place to get gas and everything else. Oh man I almost forgot to add this little fact... There are other Rusty Lanterns and a lot of things are the same at most of them... But not the food. I have had pizza at 3 other stores in the chain and none of them have even came close to the store on congress st. .. their pizza is amazing! I'm betting it's the best in the state of Maine. It's not like that at other stores. They get different crust at some stores and all the stores have different ovens. So where the Rusty Lanterns are all clean places with good gas, drinks, alcohol selections and so on, you can't get the same amazing food at the other locations that you will for sure get at the Congress st location. Facts! Sorry this is so long. I like to be descriptive as possible in reviews.. Ps... Their lobster rolls are made with fresh lobster meat cooked and picked locally. They put so much on the brioche roll that you have to take some off and eat it by itself because you can't open your mouth wide enough to take a bite and also it's piled so high it will fall off anyways! No joke.. I love the deal they have when you buy two.. and even more than the deal I love that they add a dill pickle spear wrapped in a sandwich bag to the container the roll comes in... Amazing!!!!! Now that I have talked about them I'm craving it and I have to go to the store and get one... Plus a slice of pizza because they make fresh pizza all night. They pack the cold case every night with freshly made food. There is no place I have ever seen that comes even remotely close to that place...so that's my honest opinion, thoughts and feelings... I'm pretty particular about my gas stations - I need them convenient, offering plenty of parking to get in and get out of the store and the property in general, plenty of pumps that aren't placed at some really ridiculous diagonal, clean bathrooms, and the opportunity to be incognito (because there's nothing like a business contact wanting to chat with you while pumping gas which you chose to do at midnight in your pajamas because you really thought no one you knew would also be out). Add on top of that an abundance of locally-made goods, an impressive alcohol selection, and really, really good coffee... and you've got the makings of something special. I've been to The Rusty Lantern a couple times now and definitely have it on my radar (for gas, for emergency pee breaks, for a good stop to load up on questionable potato salad to sneak into the theater with me). Spacious, quick service, and enough for purchase that if the zombie apocalypse happens you might just find me here first. read more

We needed a fast lunch, close to our hotel so we could hit the road for adventure. When I saw there was a 4.5 star "gas station", I knew we had to give it a shot. We had, a cuban, lobster bisque, Lobster roll, Egg Salad sandwich, a brownie, sliced roast beef sandwich, and chicken bacon hoagie and cheese sticks. The roast beef and the chicken hoagies were not on par with all the other items. They were fine. Everything else was exceptional. We were all blown away with the quality of the food. Several things were wrapped and ready for customers to grab, or the cook offered to make things fresh. It was so convenient to just grab what we wanted that was hot, grab a drink and a bag a chips and get back on the road! They even have a walk in beer cooler! We hit this place twice during our stay- and we'd go back again! They apparently have several locations in the area. Everything was clean and staff was friendly. read more

This review forces me to openly admit something I would rather keep to myself. I can get really excited about convenience stores attached to gas stations. So far, my gold standard is Wawa, although I have very fond memories of stopping in at a Sheetz years ago. Sadly, here in Maine there is nothing that can even come close to Wawa. No expanded coffee bar, no ordering your own sandwiches on a tablet, no fee free ATM (!). I guess Cumberland Farms has been sort of trying, but honestly, are still pretty lame in comparison. I had driven by this Rusty Lantern attached to a large, new Irving gas station a few times and never had reason to stop in, until yesterday, and...WOW! The Rusty Lantern is nothing like Wawa, they are their own kind of awesome!!!! They have an excellent wine and beer selection, super clean bathrooms, local sodas on tap, an epic local coffee selection and a kitchen staff in the back cooking and setting out quality hot and cold prepared food all day long! There are even a few tables for sitting and free wifi! Be careful as you get in the check out line, as there is a table holding warm, freshly baked cookies right out of the oven, calling your name as you wait to pay. After one of us was already starting to pump gas, I took our small son into grab a drink and use the restroom. When the cashier promptly informed us that if we were looking for a bathroom then we weren't allowed to use it. I'm sorry? He then informs us that they are being cleaned for the night and cannot be used. At 5pm!!?? Happy to see a convenient store with local options (cbd drip coffee!). I stopped in needing something very quick to eat. The prepared salads and sandwiches looked great but I went with a basic yogurt. They had a walk in beer fridge, a pizza stations and your other typical options. This Rusty Lantern has brought the level of gas station convenience stores to a whole new level. One major plus for me is they make their own baked goods right in the store. I tried one of their brownies filled with cream and it was crazy moist, stuffed with cream which made it completely delicious! Although it is an Irving Gas Station, I am not all that sure people will flock here to purchase gas. They also offer Maine Root handcrafted beverages, plus an assortment of meal type foods ranging from specialty pizza to breakfast sandwiches. The place is clean and has some available counters and tables to sit at. I most definitely will be coming back here soon! read more

Who would EVER have thought Id be so excited to write a review about a GAS STATION MARKET.. Which technically is what it is and yet at the same time it sounds horribly inappropriate if you have ever been to Rusty lantern or any gas station for that matter. I mean when I think of a gas station I think of cheap coffee, iffy people, and dirty bathrooms... I visit Rusty Lantern around breakfast time every Wed morn before 7am. And not only do they have MAINES ROOTBEER ON TAP AND IN BOTTLE... But they also have a 24 hour kitchen and Deli with pretty amazing food for anything short of a restaurant. This place is adorable. I live a stone's throw away, and I come on a near-daily basis. Incredibly clean, great stock, and friendly staff!

Working in the restaurant- and retail-free zone on outer Congress Street in Portland has always been a challenge. Driving is required if you want to pick up any lunch, and there were no options to get gas before getting on the Turnpike. So, when The Rusty Lantern was slated to open, we had cautious optimism - at least we could get gas. It is so much more than gas!! The place is great! There is lots of space with open aisles and even some seating. They have standard gas station fare like chips, candy, and sundry items, but their fresh food goes beyond what you'd expect at a gas station. Pre-made pizza, salads, fried foods, and sandwiches are fresh and appear to be replenished often. They have a menu of sandwiches and other food items that are made to order as well. The focus on local products is also very evident, with Coffee By Design, Kamasouptra, Frosty's Donuts, and my all time favorite, a Maine Root Soda fountain (everyone should have one...). I love that I don't have to drive to the mall area just to grab a quick lunch or a tank of gas anymore, and considering how busy it always is, I think a lot of people agree!! read more

Good store for gas, soda coffee ect, but don't ever work for them as they r the most unprofessional people i have ever worked for. Being bullied by the kitchen manager in front of customers, told all his reasons why I didn't deserve a raise after almost a year of employment. I was put on a months probation for calling out ONE DAY, also originally suspended for the rest of that work week, and threatened to have my mom shifts (days) taken away. I was told that I wasn't allowed to call out without a Dr's note, not even one day. He also crossed the line by constantly making fun of a gay employee who ended up quitting bc he couldn't take it anymore. read more

Went for the coffee and a fill up. The coffee wasn't great but not bad for inexpensive convenience store coffee.

The food is not fresh at all. Spent 8 dollars on a wrap I couldn't even eat. Lettuce was brown on the closed end of the wrap, tomatoes we're soggy and not to mention there was a long blonde hair in it. I will not get food there ever again. Even cumbies does a better job then that. read more

This store just opened not too long ago and I can't say I would recommend it. Some of their food is good but customer service is where it really counts, isn't it? A couple of the "ladies" at the counter are very rude. I'm not one to write a negative review. I try to find the good things out of every establishment. But when it comes to poor customer service I tend to overlook the positive aspects of the store. I was extremely happy when this store opened and my first impression was that it was wonderful. Now I'm a little disappointed. LOVE the store, very much DISLIKE some of the employees. read more
