They have long wooden picnic tables that can accommodate for different parties sizes and there is live music for entertainment. I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the food before everyone grabbed some for their plate but there are a lot of shareable items. Many of the sharing plates had a distinct smoky flavor that I enjoyed but they might not be for everyone. I ordered a coronita and was very happy with my selection. It was strong but had a great mix of flavors. The Rustic has a lot of drink options so you can substitute the base alcohol if you want another one. Overall it is a great place to go out on a Friday night that is open late. read more

I came here while attending a conference at the George Brown Convention center. It was walking distance, despite the heat index being ~105 degrees (yikes). I sat at the huge round bar and ordered the lunch special, half of a hot chicken sandwich and a house salad. The sandwich was pretty good. It wasn't like Nashville hot chicken (it never is) but good nonetheless. The salad was tasty and refreshing. It was around $15 for the lunch special but there aren't many options near the convention center so I'd say it was worth it. GREAT FOOD, poor POOR service. Went for Sunday brunch, our waiter was extremely slow and failed to take our brunch order and get it in before 3 pm (brunch cut off time) and brought 2 of my friends who then had to find something new to eat only ONE menu? Which I think shows a lack of awareness in the situation. We had to flag them down multiple times. They were completely inattentive. My friend then KINDLY went to talk to a manager (their name was Walker, but I don't think she was a manager and if she was, she wasn't great) who offered to get us a round of drinks, which we declined because we weren't after comped items, we were wanting better service. She said she would figure it out and come check on us.. she never did. Food comes out for only half the table, we were waiting on two SALADS.. and an appetizer which should've been out already. we then flag her down and she goes to check it out in the kitchen. Our waiter never put our half of the order in.. at this point they said they're comping the whole meal. And they end up bringing us a free queso.. we still never got the appetizer we originally ordered. my friends of course wait to eat until everyone got their food. The salads finally come out after 20 minutes, by then my friends food is cold. I then asked someone for a manager, still out of both of our requests, I don't believe we talked to an actual manager. I wish I pushed harder on that. Anyways, Josh brought out a hot plate for my friends. We FINALLY got to eat after having been there for 2 hours. Mind you this place was only at like 40% capacity.. it was NOT busy. I appreciated them comping the meal (but honestly what else were they going to do after service that bad) but even in doing so, the service never got even the slightest bit better which is what we wanted.. We went to the Rustic after an event at UH. We had a big group of 13. They accommodated us quickly. Our server was Corey. He was awesome! So patient and went above and beyond for us! I really enjoyed dining here & the outdoor feel(except for the flies). The cool breeze was refreshing in May. I had the spicy salmon salad that was ok, not spicy at all & undercooked so I couldn't eat but half of the salmon. Our adventure here was planned by my oldest daughter who had done research on 'best places in Houston' and spotlighted The Rustic. I must tell you that if you can, take advantage of their Happy Hour (over at 6pm) because the deals are real and the discounted margs are the same as ever. At the end of a day of eating, our party of six chose to go with a series of single dishes and shared them. The trio of Tamales was a well crafted masterpiece, but I chose the single (side) spicy tamale which you can specify in one of three meat choices. I chose beef brisket. The brisket was nicely smoked, and very tender. The Tamale is served deconstructed style which isn't as heavy as other offerings I've had. In this, the corn husk is down first with crumbly sweet corm masa next with the meat on top. It's not spicy just very flavorful and well balanced. This isn't your usual 'Tex Mex' place because it isn't that. It rather a blending of regions, and you won't find any familiar 'red chunky salsa' here served with typical chips because the cuisine here is elevated to a new level and seeks to establish it's own niche. I believe it has done so. Before I end, I must give kudo's to the attention paid to the margarita offerings. Well thought out and just plain fun...sip into a good dining experience. Saturday night girls out, for drinks and dessert and we were surprised with a Britney v Christina moment which we love. As an ex-bartender, I have two specific complaints and they are both drink based. I ordered three different drinks that night, a mojito, an old fashioned and a pineapple smoke. The mojito was a disappointment and tasted like sprite. The mint leaves ( don't get me started and it not being Hierba Buena) were not muddled, and there was no discernible lime in the drink. Overall a 2/5. The old fashioned, which is normally my drink of choice, was even more of a disappointment. First it was noticeable that too much bitters had been in this cocktail, and the fruit used was a lemon rather than a traditional orange. Honestly I sent this one back, and I hate doing that. 1/5. Pineapple Smoke, which sounded interesting and I thought I'd be adventurous on my last choice, and it didn't disappoint. Tequila and Mezcal with citrus forward mixing and a touch of cinnamon. Worth it, solid 4/5. The dessert we went with was the Ice Box S'mores and it was great! Huge but the flavor was wonderful seemed like it was garnished with a home made marshmallow. $10 Valet, 3 hour free validation in a nearby garage for parking. 2 handicap parking spots on site that aren't part of Valet. read more

I am OBSESSED with the onion rings and the icebox s'mores. The onion rings are MASSIVE. Girl they ain't lyin' when they said everything IS bigger in Texas. They were also seasoned very uniquely unlike any onion ring I've tried before. Like a spiced-smokey seasoning. Usually onion rings are bland but GIRL these had big personality. My pops and I agreed there were probably THE best onion rings we've ever tried. Icebox s'mores was super interesting! It's layered graham cracker with icing in between, but was made very soft like a cake. I think the topmost layer of icing was a larger spread so it made it too sweet so I scraped it off - It was perfect once I did. One huge delicious marshmallow on top. I've only tried artificial tasting marshmallows from childhood, but this marshmallow tasted real and fresh. Loved this thing. It was like a s'mores cake. I think it was creative and I wish I could make this at home in LA. I tried the cactus fries too! Went in with the intention to be adventurous on vacation .. but ended up not being a fan. The way the cactus cuts soaked up the oil made it taste just like a stick of oil. I think it was seasoned the same way as the onion rings. Service was attentive and quick! Music schedule is on their website. I stayed at the Hilton Americas across the street. Before stopping by The Rustic, I was so gosh darned tired I almost didn't go to this place - Glad I did! If you're tired from a day of Houston traffic, you're walking distance from it, go walk in, grab a drink and appetizer, and enjoy the live music and enjoy yourself. It was our first time at the Rustic tonight , as we were scoping out some place to have a party next month . Overall the experience was less than desirable. Great atmosphere, poor execution of service . Pros: Valet parking was a breeze . Music was excellent, food was good . Cons: Service & hospitality We walked up to the front bar to get a drink and found the bar staff inattentive and unfriendly . We waited for several minutes before either of the bartenders acknowledged that we were there . Not a smile a nod or a "be with you in a minute." After we sat down at a table, we decided that we wanted to eat . Upon asking for a server, the person assigned to us seemed less than enthusiastic upon greeting our table . He was dismissive when we asked for menus and periodically disappeared for significant amounts of time throughout our experience. Drinks took WAY too long , 15 minutes between the time we ordered and received our second round. Definitely not the friendliest or most attentive server . The manager was nice , but excused the bar because they were "backed up" and did not appear to be overly concerned with our experience. Overall, the staff was plentiful, but it seemed like they were more focused on the large private party and reservations than on the general population of customers. We discussed going back for my birthday celebration, but are concerned how it would impact our guests experience with the lacking service and overall wait times for drinks .
