We went to the Gainesville Atlas Walk store to buy a pair of high quality running shoes for our high school granddaughter who participates in NJROTC athletics competitions. Our salesperson, Sam, was simply awesome! He educated us as to the proper size shoe for her (we didn't know she had wide feet!), where she puts the pressure on her feet, and helped her select the right shoe -- in fact, we ended up buying 2 pairs of running shoes so she'd have an alternate pair and a few pairs of moisture wicking socks. I don't run much anymore, but I do a lot of walking, and with a back injury it's important to me that I'm wearing good shoes. So, on the recommendation of a friend, I stopped by the Running Store one weekend when I was in that neck of the woods. This is a really well-run establishment, with knowledgeable staff who seem consistently trained in how to help fit you with the best shoes possible. I've been back twice now, and all of the salespeople I've worked with have been friendly and very helpful! For your fitting, they will ask you to run (or walk) on a treadmill for a short amount of time so that they can videotape your stride. They will explain to you what they're looking for in evaluating your gait, and then bring out a number of shoes for you to try that they think will fit your running style. It's not foolproof; I did end up buying a pair of shoes on my last visit that were just not working for me after I'd been wearing them for a couple weeks, but I brought them back within the allotted 30-day trial period and they exchanged them for a different pair, no questions asked. It is refreshing to find a store that really cares about their customers and will go out of their way to give you the best service possible. They have more than just shoes, too; they also stock a decent selection of workout clothes and cleats. The store offers a running club for adults and a youth track club - might be fun if you live in the Manassas/Gainesville area. Every time I've been in, someone on the staff recognizes at least one customer and they'll talk about recent races or training... it seems like there is a nice sense of community. I've also tried buying running shoes at a supposedly reputable shoe store in downtown DC - that was a real disaster, I told them I had a back injury and they automatically put me in the most supportive shoes they had... not good when you have a pretty neutral gait! Now I think it's worth the drive out to Gainesville to get great service backed by people who really know what they're doing. While it is a bit of a trek if you're coming from DC, you can get some of your other shopping done while you're out there at any of the shops in the shiny new mall - including a Super Target (woo!)- or stop at the huge Fair Oaks mall just off I-66 on your way back to town. read more

Getting back to running has been one of the best things and I don't plan on quitting any time soon. That said, I was nervous about my next pair of shoes and asking "dumb" questions about shoe types, how to get more involved. Things of that nature. I used to live in Haymarket, and recall the The Running Store. So I went and on my first trip it was purely an information sharing activity. I didn't feel pressured to buy anything, it was a simple gait analysis and conversation about potential next shoe types to try out. Brendan was MORE than patient with me and my questions about product, gait correction, and just generally in the pocket of conversation. Actively listening, sharing his experiences and assisting me understand what may work out for me, he really seemed to so a general care about making sure I had my questions answered. When I got home, I was inspecting my shoes and noticed a wear spot that honestly a new pair of shoes were needed asap. So given the recent experience I had, I went back to the TRS (the running store). Brendan was there, so this was pure luck. He recalled our prior conversation and I had explained to him how the Brooks Ghost 12 had a wear spot (outer edge wear, pronate right foot ) that frankly only a new pair of shoes would fix. Without pause he selected around 5 different sets of shoes, and was able to speak about the products in detail. I was able to take each shoe for a quick jaunt on the tread to really get a good "demo" of the shoe's feel. Something that frankly every runner should do when making such an investment. I stopped by for a visit after my feet had begun to hurt in my current running shoes. Sam greeted my at the door, listened to my explanation of the issue and then began an assessment to determine what type of shoe would work best for me. He looked at the way my feel moved as I walked and completed a foot scan analysis which showed where on my feet I put the most pressure, the width of my feet, height of my arches and more. He then recommended a few different shoes for me to try on. He was extremely laid back/ no sales pressure which I really appreciated. I ended up purchasing a pair of Hokas as well as superfeet insoles. They have made a HUGE difference and my feet no longer hurt! I am so glad I didn't just purchase a random pair of shoes online. I've been a customer since 2015. Ian and his entire staff are highly knowledgeable about the brands and products they offer. They will make the best recommendations based on what they learn during a genuine conversation with you, and not try to sell you anything more. They always make sure you're taken care of as soon as you come into the store, and will remember you if you're a repeat customer. I've had several candid conversations with most of the staff (all seasoned runners themselves) who have offered me invaluable tips and suggestions about my running experience, which has only made it more enjoyable for myself. I LOVE TRS! Just went in on Friday for new kicks as my knees and hips were telling me it was time. Sam met me right at the door and was very kind and helpful from the start! I showed him my shoes, and he agreed it was time for new ones. I shared I wanted the exact same shoes and didn't care about color, just staying healthy and injury free. I have to wear an ankle stabilizer brace while wearing my shoes. My current pair of shoes,even with a longer shoe lace, we're just to uncomfortable and causing some pain in my foot. As soon as I walked into the store I was greeted by Alisa. She had asked me what she could help me with. I had explained that I had foot surgery a month ago and had to wear an ankle stabilizer brace. That I thought I needed either a larger or bigger size shoe to wear while I recover. Alisa was the best and definitely ask for her if you go in! She took the time and really helped me find a shoe that would work for my needs. I don't really enjoy working out but I have to, so I do. But I'd noticed my shoes were making my toes hurt and I had a new cracking sound in one leg, not good when you're over 55 and things crack all on their own.These new shores have made a difference in how I feel after the treadmill or bowflex and I've had fewer issues. Actually I've had no issues so far, so it really does help to have the right equipment. She also recommended a flip flop and after I tried on a pair, I knew I had to add one pair (for now) for longer walking. I love and live in Crocs in the summer, but their flip flop is much more cushioning and supportive That means more walking won't be worse for my legs, knees and ankles. Picked up some socks, too, ones with toes so when it's cooler I can still wear my flops. I would have given 5 stars but the price still has me gasping a bit. My Podiatrist recommended the running store for my husband to get some good shoes. He has foot problems. So last fall we went in to get shoes for us both. A few days ago I went in and got him a new pair of the same shoes. (He wears them to work and needs to keep them nice). The shoes I had bought for myself previously didn't work out for me but had been great for my daughter. So I went through the process with my sales guy and got a different pair that are doing great.
