We discovered this place in an attempt to find a rum runner, but the bartender convinced us to try the Pain Killer. Thank god he did, this is my new favorite drink of all time! The ambiance is wonderful and the bartender is friendly. Sitting outside was beautiful. I wish I had stayed here the bed and breakfast! We came back everyday and got 2 Pain Killers each. While enjoying a stroll down Duval St. on a beautiful February afternoon, we saw this little place and decided to stop in for a drink. It started pouring rain when we first got to key west and so we ran into this bar! They have so many types of rum we got a mojito and another cocktail which literally so strong. Cute place, decent drinks! A plethora of rum on hand, as to be anticipated. Interior is rather small with limited seating- but not "Covid" approved but any means. Exterior has a few selections of small intimate settings for beverages outside, which is also lovely at night. Also, not the coolest AC for such a small place. But tolerable at least! read more

Nice friendly atmosphere. Everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. The bartender was definitely busy but made sure to get my drink. Sat outside to enjoy the fresh breeze and met a local "citizen of the day". Over all my guava breeze and time here were very pleasant. I will say cups are on the smaller size. Now, I'm not going to try to even pretend that I know anything about rum. However, I do know a good bar when I see it, and this place is epic. It has a casual and cozy atmosphere, a spot where locals and tourist become unified in their pursuit of a Key West good time. My bartender Helen was a rockstar, working the crowd like a true showman. She kept everyone at the bar entertained, all the while mixing up some of the tastiest drinks on Duval Street. Her charm and grace made you feel right at home, which was complemented by chilled attitude of the bar's mascot, a massive Maine Coon cat that had placed himself at the other end of the bar. Besides serving as the perfect base of operations for anyone's exploration of this section of the island, the Rum Bar does in fact rank as one of the world's top rum bars, so enjoy. read more

Why 3 stars? Because my mojito was A-OK. --- --- --- After reading the review from the immortal Cassie P, who declared this the best mojito she'd ever had, I knew I had to visit The Rum Bar. We wrapped our dinner before 8:00, which meant that it was too early to head back to the hotel, even for super lame asses like ourselves. As I scoured my bookmarks for one last place to hit up in Key West, I saw that comment from Cassie and decided that I would end my journey at The Rum Bar. When I arrived, the bartender was spending quite a bit of time making another patron a drink. I don't know what it was, but I was excited to see how much TLC she was pouring into it. I figured that my mojito would be of the same quality. Unfortunately, it was just the opposite experience. I was shocked at how quickly my drink was ready, and as much as I love receiving my cocktail within a minutes or ordering it, it generally means that something isn't adding up. The answer, in my best assumption, is that Cassie and I definitely had different bartenders. This was the definition of an average mojito. Think: Holiday Inn bar. And it's fine, because it wasn't super expensive or anything, but I was definitely disappointed based on other reviews, and of course, the fact that the places is called, "The Rum Bar." The bartender and the other patrons were quite the nice folks. And we even had the pleasure of meeting the cat that lives here, who hopped up onto a bar stool like he was waiting for his own mojito. This wasn't a terrible experience, but it certainly could have been better. read more

The Rum Bar was the only bar I visited while making a stop in Key West on a cruise. I was enticed by the glowing Yelp reviews, but felt that the experience was just A-OK. + Vast rum selection + Cocktail menu + Intimate indoor and outdoor seating + Nice music selection (The Eagles, Cranberries, etc.) - Ordered a classic mojito, but was talked into a coconut mojito with no acknowledgement of a surcharge - The mojito was okayyyyy - Water is self serve - Bartender bashed our choice for lunch plans and talked us into a "local" spot that ended up being completely out of the way and triple the price of what we planned on spending for lunch read more

Great stop on a hot or cool day. Menu has 8 options. But,..... they are more than willing to customize anything for you. There is seating outside and you can get a cup to go. Wow! This was a great bar in Key West that we stopped in for cocktails after a Dry Tortugas day trip. The bartender was one of the most knowledgeable and friendly gents that I've ever had the pleasure of talking to. He is a huge rum buff and it shows. The quality and quantity of rum available here is greater than I've ever seen, and he knows the flavors and finesse of each and every one. My friend and I partook in a fruity rum cocktail (which the bartender gave me some ribbing about) as we watched others partake in various rum flights. Honestly I had more fun watching other people talk about, dissect, and debate the subtleties of their rum flights than I did sipping on my drink. They also have a friendly fat cat who will wander by every so often. He added to the charm! Bottom line: great strong drinks, amazing bartender, fantastic company. Next time I'm in Key West I'll be back here for sure! read more

If you are fan of rum, and I'm not talking about Captain & Coke (no offense to Captain Morgan), I mean a serious, no f&$%ing around selection of sipping rums, then look no further than the rum bar on Duval Street in Key West. This place is wonderful. There is a large selection of rims from around the world. The bartender is knowledgeable and friendly and the rum cocktails are sublime. This establishment is also part of the Speakeasy Inn (or at least it used to be). Stop in for a drink. You won't be disappointed. read more

I had a great time here I was in Key West by myself, just enjoying life, and wandered into the rum bar to find a wonderful selection of delicious rooms, totally awesome and friendly patrons and a slightly friendly bartender named Lori. No offense to you Lori, Key West is crazy, the people there are probably a little bit annoying but you are in customer service and you could try a little bit harder. Otherwise I would've given you five stars but hey I have worked in food and beverage and I'm sure that you are ready for a vacation and I hope you are enjoying Kentucky right now:-) so on with the positive part, your place is very well run and I look forward to returning! read more

I saw The Rum Bar on travel guide Samantha Brown's PBS show "Places to Love." The interior has a speakeasy vibe and there's also a nice front porch for enjoying your drink. The rum menu is a tome -- if you're looking for any particular type of rum, you'll probably find it here. Rum flights are available, but there are also a number of standard rum-based cocktail/tiki drinks, including hurricanes and rum runners (the latter is the official drink of Key West). We went here on a weeknight at about 9 PM and it wasn't crowded. The drinks were great and reasonably priced relative to other Duval Street locales. read more

So here's the thing. We are huge history buffs and love the 20's and prohibition speakeasy places. We FINALLY made it here, after many vacations to the Keys. We drank at many places over the few days of this last trip, and must say, Nick makes the best Painkiller! There is a new place across the street that claimed to make one like the Virgin Islands but it was NOT good, and when we took it back to Nick to "fix", he just dumped it and made me a new one, the right way, lol! Friendly patrons, friendly staff, and nice front porch to have a cocktail on! Highly recommended! read more

I'm so glad that we were blessed enough to have this incredible experience amongst the coronavirus season. We stayed at the speakeasy inn upstairs, and started my birthday weekend at the rum bar. Locals say this place will have you arrive a stranger, and leave with a room full of new friends. Never in my life have I experienced a situation quite that accurate. If your looking for a walk through history, and a true speakeasy experience, than there is no where else on the island to go, besides The Rum Bar!! read more

We were strolling Duval Street with with our dog and came upon this place. At first we were just going to grab some to go drinks but noticed a really cool patio with chairs and an umbrella so we decided to stay. The staff there are friendly, welcoming and did not mind my dog hanging with us. The drinks are delicious! I recommend the pain killer, prices for the area are fair. Five stars because they made one of (if not) the best mojitos I've ever had! On top of that, we met some friendly folks while nestled against the bar and overall, found solace from the storm. Literally. We walked in here soaking from head to foot. My boyfriend was ready to strangle me as I may (or may not) have told him it "wasn't raining that hard" before we left our hotel. That's what he says but I don't really remember because once we took one sip of our rum laced drinks, all previous quabbling was all but forgotten. The famed Bahama Bob was not working that night but a very nice lady was instead! As I said before, we ordered some mojitos that were not too sweet, not too citrusy and most importantly, packed a punch without us even realizing! The overall feel of the bar was very calming as well. Everyone at the bar was striking up conversations and it really made for a pleasant time. Two mojitos each later, we were ready for dinner down the road. We were anxious to go back to The Rum Bar the next night but were a little too far away; however, I have no doubt this will become a regular rotation in my Key West haunts! read more

Time to PAR-TAY ! ! ! Ready to get LOADED? Get up on a table... shake your money maker... maybe strip off a layer or two.... entice some locals to toss you some beads for flashing the "high-beams"... Getting all psyched up for a rambunctious night that you hope to wake the next day and remember tidbits of this you may or may not regret... maybe one of those coyote ugly sort of scenarios ***BIG HEADLINE*** You are barking up the wrong tree ! ! ! If the analogy didn't do it for you, then let me make it a bit clearer... walk back out and head to all the cliche bars on the north end of Duval... Now, if you're more like me and enjoy a place where you can have friendly conversation with your friends, rub shoulders with colorful locals, not feel rushed to give up your stool or table, small but always room to grab a seat, be able to carry on a conversation without screaming (try doing that at Sloppy Joes or Fat Tuesday). ***BOTTOM LINE*** Rum Bar is everything that the north end of Duval is not; quiet, laid back, chill... and they make some decent rum drinks obviously read more

Every time I see the word "Rum" for some reason I think of Captain Jack Sparrow, stranded in that island and telling Elizabeth "welcome to the Caribbean love" while searching for his rum. Well, I am from Puerto Rico, and in the Caribbean yes, we drink Rum. My friends know this so, they knew I would like Rum Bar, especially since they make my favorite drink right now, the Dark & Stormy. It's a small bar with a lot of different bottles of rum. Their specialty is, of course, rum drinks like the mentioned Dark & Stormy, Rum Punch, Rum Runner, Pain Killer, Mojito, and more. To please everyone they also have some Tequila, Vodka, Whiskey... But, again, I was there for the rum. The Dark & Stormy is prepared perfectly, with the dark and light division effect on the tall glass, with a lemon wedge on the rim. To try something new, I had the Pain Killer. I thought it would be a little too sweet for my taste because of the cream of coconut but I was pleasantly surprised, it was really good, smooth, and refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. Bahama Bob is not a chatty bartender. He's there to make your drinks. He's one of the best and takes it very seriously but, if you talk to him, he happily replies and continues the conversation. Everyone having a drink was friendly and in a good mood - why wouldn't you be when having these amazing drinks. Plus there's a little porch to sit outside if you choose to. This will be one of my "mandatory" stops whenever I go to the Keys. read more

Small and quaint bar with excellent and cheerful bartender. My aunt ordered a pain killer drink to help cure her hangover. It was really delicious and different as it had coconut cream in it. Unusual. After drinking half of the drink, she was feeling much better. The prices are kind of pricey, but it is a great place to start off your night or morning as you'd want a quality mixed drink to get your day going and be able to savor its flavors for the price you paid. Seating is slightly limited as this is also part of an inn, but feel free to pull up a chair from outside or inside wherever you are to sit with your crew while you enjoy your drinks. read more

A repeat stop on my 2nd Key West trip and it's one of the main places I've recommended to others. A great place for a mid-afternoon cocktail or two or an after dinner drink or to learn more about rum. The Painkiller is a great drink, while others range from straight forward, rum and one ingredient to the more complicated that combine a tasty drink with dessert. History

Established in 2008.

The Speakeasy Inn and Rum Bar is the former home of rum-runner Raul Vasquez, born in Tampa on August 21, 1890, died in Key West December 10, 1957. Raul left an enduring symbol of his occupation on his residence at 1117 Duval Street; and one of the "sights" of Key West today are the palings on the upper porch depicting bottles and the spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs of the Spanish playing card deck. (The "club" designation looks like a three-lobed spot familiar to most American card-players.) Today, visitors can relax in our reasonably-priced, airy tropical rooms and enjoy any of over 250 kinds of rum (and other beverages) in the Rum Bar on the first floor.

However, here's the catch: Happy Hour was advertised everywhere--on the front signage and even in the hallways--but when we asked about it, the staff seemed completely unaware. No one could confirm the specials, and it felt awkward having to explain what we saw posted. For a place that promotes Happy Hour so visibly, this was a big miss. Drinks were solid, and the vibe was fun, but that disconnect on Happy Hour left us feeling a little disappointed. If you're going for the ambiance and a good time, you'll enjoy it.

We also tried blowing smoke up your glass, this was made with Papa Pilar, dark rum, pineapple, fresh lime, house made basil syrup & tiki bitters. Absolutely fabulous. We also tried their deviled eggs each topped with unique toppings like trout row, bacon, and scallions. They were absolutely fabulous. They also have a great selection of charcuterie, Key nuts which you can order with different flavor, profiles, caviar, olives & peppers. Also, the most generous happy hour I've ever heard of from 12 to 6 PM every day. Don't miss out on this little jewel when in Key West.

We sat at the high tops and you had to go to the bar to get your drinks. Problem is that the bar has patrons sitting as well so you are hovering over them waiting for a drink. It was very uncomfortable to impose upon others to try to get a drink. I am sure they didn't appreciate the audience as they were eating as well. The bartenders were way too busy and overwhelmed. Not only are they serving the seated patrons and the 4 small nooks, they are also making drinks for the attached restaurant. There were a gazillion tickets coming out of the printer and servers standing on the other side of the window waiting. It's just not possible to serve everyone with just two bartenders. We waited about 10 minutes for service. The drinks were underwhelming for a speakeasy. Just your typical menu. What we ordered was okay. They just missed a great opportunity to create unique twists on classics or to have craft cocktails. Even the classics (which are perfect for a speakeasy) weren't that great. For a speakeasy, the drinks are the main event. Glad we tried it as we always seek out speakeasies. Wouldn't go again.
