Not much to crow about at The Roost. Cheap eats but extremely basic and lacking flavor. Service is on the slower side, even if the restaurant isn't slammed expect to wait. Also note they do not serve hard liquor here. Bloody Mary's are made with sake instead. *Yelp wouldn't let me check in at this restaurant. It said I was "too faraway to check in here" even though I was inside the restaurant on their WIFI. Thought I'd mention that since this review will be missing that little check at the top. read more

We come up to our cabin in the northwoods multiple times every summer and this was the first time we've tried this restaurant. The pictures and reviews looked amazing but we were underwhelmed. We came for breakfast, the presentation was great but the food wasn't. I asked the waitress what she recommends and she said she was new and the two things she's had were way too greasy for her taste. I went with the crab cake Benedict based on another reviewers photo and my husband got the griddler. My eggs were overcooked and the crab cakes were wayyy over seasoned and salty, and I normally love crab cakes and salt... the best part was the bed of spinach. My husband said his was an odd combination and not very good, ironically his was underseasoned and flavorless. The dinner menu looks good so I might be willing to try that sometime if we need a new option but I was definitely disappointed here. read more

Maybe it's more of a breakfast place? Overpriced reheated cafeteria quality. They charged $20+ per person for a tiny mexican buffet on a little table. With 3 people, 2 drinks each, tax & tip it was $100.00+ This buffet of stingy tough meat and the usual tiny condiments on a little table is something you would see on a low quality happy hour...for free. Stopped here on our way home and we were disappointed by the novice teenage staff that failed to inform us as we were seated that they were out of steak for their steak and eggs... I ordered a Bloody Mary, was not told that it's made from sake ???? And my eggs Florentine came without spinach... no discounts after many issues. Would not go back. read more

We hadn't eaten at the Roost for some time after learning their cook was not vaccinated against Covid, nor did the staff wear masks except in the earliest days of the pandemic.. We arrived at the restaurant at 4:00 opening time. We were the first ones in the door. In spite of this we waiited forever for our food. Food was cold, my cole slaw never did arrive in spite of my partner's salad being served and eaten before I finally had to ask for my cole slaw. Fish fry arrived ...3 pieces of very white cod on a plain white plate with no garnish, no lemon, no tartar sauce, no butter. Forgot my potato. My partner's potato was from the night before...just reheated...couldn't even cut into it it was so overmicrowaved and grey inside.. We asked for some tartar sauce...never received it. Food arrived cold after waiting a long time for it. Asked for it to be reheated. Waitress disappeared with the food. Half hour later she still had not come back with the food. One hour after arriving at their 4:00 opening time, I went into the kitchen and asked where my food was. The young girl in the kitchen snapped at me "We're making you a new meal, you weren't happy with it. I replied just wanted it heated up. 1 hour after arriving and still no food we left. Waitresses were in gym shorts and ripped jeans. A far cry from the opening days of this restaurant when they were trying to duplicate a Minneapolis fine dining experience in this lake community. They do a large catering business to a neighborhood bar and eatery and special events. This seems to be the focal point of the owner at the expense of letting the restaurant slide. . read more

Really wanted to like this little place located in a little ranch house out in the country. It was very dissapointing with only a few waitstaff that seemed very stressed out..God bless them. We stopped for the Friday fish fry. It was very good, and the service was very friendly. They give you a chicken wing appetizer with the meal. I am not a huge wing fan, but those were delicious. I would go back for the wing night they have! The coleslaw was also very good. We will be going back! read more

My husband and I went here for breakfast. We both had the french toast breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, and ham. It was served with American fries and a fruit garnish. It was delicious and plentiful. They are currently open for breakfast, lunch, and a Friday night fish fry. The menu is extensive, the decor is comfy and the staff is very friendly. I went to " The Roost " for the first time , took my Mom to help celebrate my birthday. She had the Shrimp, French Fries, appetizer was Breaded Mushrooms, soup was Clam Chowder. I ordered the Cod ( both baked & breaded ) Cottage Cheese, appetizer was Breaded Calamari, soup was Flavorful Tomato. More pieces of fish are available at no extra cost .All this is included with the one price .Our Waitress was Britany, which made the meal extra great. After we ordered we waited only 3 minutes to get the first course ( appetizer). She waited till we got done with one course before she brought the next. Fine waitressing. This is a great place for breakfast and dinner. They have all you can eat shrimp on Wednesday and Thursday and it's really good. Great sauce choices, good wines and great service. We will add this restaurant to the list of "must go to" when we are up at the cabin. read more

This is a nice family friendly restaurant. We have been there for breakfast or lunch many times. However, I can't recommend the Friday night all you can eat fish fry in the summer because they can't adequately handle the restaurant seating plus the deck seating. We were in our seats in the dining room at 630 pm, but weren't served our entree until 740 pm. This was too long a wait for the elderly people in our party. I don't think the kitchen could handle the volume. Also, we were only served 1 small piece of fish initially, and waited another 25 minutes for a refill serving which was better quality than our initial serving. We had to flag down our server for simple items like water and ketchup. We will probably wait until winter to return. read more

A couple friends and I stopped for breakfast at The Roost this past week and it was really good. We enjoyed all the usuals and I thought the hash was very good. This is one of the cleanest restaurants I've been to. Maybe because it looks like its recently redone. The patio is made nice by someone who knows how to garden - beautiful flowers. If you want a first-class, up-scale New Years Eve dinner, the Roost is the place for you! At the corner of County B and County M, the Roost, under new ownership, focuses on meals you'd expect to find in the finer restaurants in Chicago or Minneapolis. We joined friends and neighbors there last night on New Year's Eve for 7-course meal. Starting with crostini with olive tapenade & balsamic tomato-basil, followed by your choice of soups. Had I not been really hungry, I'd had a hard time finishing the French-cut lamb and a huge pork chop. To cleanse the palet, lemon sorbet followed. Then came the beef bourguignon & seared halibut...then kale & carrot salad topped with lemon vinaigrette. Topped off this dinner with a wonderful cream cheese flan. A limited but nice selection of wines and several beer brands made a perfect accompaniment. The price...very reasonable....far below what you'd pay at other finer restaurants. Let's get the word out there: Washburn County Wisconsin now offers fine quality dining at reasonable prices. read more
