A perfectly cozy cafe that was filled on a Saturday night with lots of folks getting their holiday weekend caffeine boost. I got my usual oat milk lattes, which were delicious! The barista was friendly and luckily there wasn't much of a line when I stopped in. After a big Thanksgiving meal, the last thing I was craving were sweets and cakes, but the pastry section did look pretty fantastic. I've been stopping in here for years when I visit Northampton, and The Roost is consistently a delight. Food is great, staff are friendly, and the place is consistently suffused with the quiet, happy buzz of a busy local mainstay. I always tell myself that I'll restrain myself when it comes to their baked goods, and I'm never disappointed when I inevitably walk out with something sweet and delicious. We went to The Roost for breakfast fairly early on a Saturday morning, there were only a couple of other parties there. The Roost is a rustic, vegetarian/vegan friendly cafe and bakery. Don't let the understated appearance of the shop fool you--I had the best fruit and granola yogurt bowl I have ever had. I believe they make the granola there--it had a nice cinnamon (and possibly nutmeg and clove?) flavor and the fruit was fresh and delicious. We waited for a long time for our smoothie to come up and finally went to the counter to inquire about it and were told they had forgotten about it. They made it quickly after that. Four stars for having vegan options and being open on a Monday that so happens to also be a holiday! I've noticed many places with vegan options are closed on Mondays for some reason. So, the stars are solely for providing vegan options and being open daily. Woohoo! I wasn't interested in the options provided since it was still morning so I wanted to get a bagel. They offer plain and everything bagels as well as vegan cream cheese and butter!! Not many places offer vegan cream cheese/butter so that was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, they ran out of bagels by the time we got there at 10:45a. Their bakery case also wasn't labeled with what was and wasn't vegan so we had to ask. No biggie. Only option was a cupcake that came in two sizes. The cake itself was soft and delicious, the frosting a bit buttery but still yummy. Would I purchase again? No. But I appreciate the options! Incredible : they demand that you tip their kitchen 9% of your baked goods total. The owner has the responsibility, like other establishments, to pay their kitchen staff at least minimum wage. The ambiance of the place was very inviting, and welcoming. The AC was strong and there was a section where the full glass window opened up to have extra seating facing the street. The staff present were nice, helpful, and overall great. The food was brought out to me within 10 minutes of ordering. The BLT+A was amazing. The sandwich had the perfect amount of everything. The one thing I will say on this sandwich is that the bacon was a tad bit greasy. The rooster rolls looked tasty! But my partner decided to get the Cali Sammi. The egg soufflé was airy and fluffy - done beautifully. Again, this roll had the perfect amount of everything in it so as we were eating it, it was not messy and falling apart. If any modifications at all, the pico de gallo could be spiced a little to give the sandwich more of a kick. The flavors are there, but an extra kick would be nice. My friend, mom and I shared a hearty brownie along with trying their green tea and sour tea plus their coffee. We were satisfied with the drinks being mild and easy to sip on. Brownie was chewy and soft, would have been excellent if still warm and served with vanilla ice cream. You order at the front and they call your name when ready which is efficient service. I had breakfast here for the first time recently and the gluten-free waffle was AMAZING!! I thought waffles were a thing of the past for me, but this one tasted just like the real thing! I got it as the sub-GF bread on my egg sandwich, and it worked surprisingly well. I also ate part of it as a "normal" waffle with butter and maple syrup, and it was heavenly. I highly recommend this place for breakfast, it was delicious. They also do a good job of listing GF and vegan on their menu, and I had questions about other allergens (particularly soy) and they were super helpful, and brought out a binder that had the ingredients lists of all the menu items. Total find. We didn't have dinner reservations on Saturday night prior to the show at the Calvin, so we happened into The Roost completely by accident. Originally we tried the Thai place....but they couldn't keep up with the demand and there was no way we'd get served dinner in time for the show. The Roost is a great space...chill vibe...with lots of healthy, fresh choices. There's a nice beer menu as well...so I had a coffee stout with a fabulous arugula salad. The desserts looked great but I refrained...maybe next time. Staff hustles and once your food is ordered at the counter, they deliver it (if you're staying). 100% recommend the roost. It's a classic Northampton establishment I have been there countless times. Today I went and got the itty bitty - so delicious and an iced matcha. The only thing id like to see that most cafes have is simple syrup and cinnamon on deck. They don't have milks out which isn't as necessary but may be nice too. It seems like they're trying to keep things simple so I understand not having milks out but maybe the syrup and cinnamon would be nice. Misleading pricing, nasty staff, and anti-homelessness architecture! These people pretend to be so progressive (they had a vaccine mandate for customers etc.) but they have a combination code to get in to the bathrooms to make sure only paying customers use it. They don't label the exorbitantly priced pastries, and now the've added a 9% service fee which is only reflected in a small sign with a tiny font right next the the card machine. They claim doing this is the only way they are able to pay their staff adequately. Maybe they should expand their hours a little if they can't pay their employees well. Cause they are always closed.... The staff are always incredibly rude. I am a 30 year old local who grew up in Northampton, and I have been going to The Roost since it opened. I have had many unpleasant experiences with the baristas over the years. Seems like the only hire meanies. Very bad vibes! read more

The reviews were good, the location convenient, the chicken sandwich fresh and delicious, but the rest was..."unusual" The process is confusing - a combination of self service and interior delivery. The only unoccupied tables (only 2) were dirty, so we had to get a staff member to clean. He skipped the chairs...we wiped off the crumbs. Get your own water, order at the counter - receive your drink, from tea to wine and beer, then find a table not occupied by someone who has made this their office for the day. I can understand why they have no outlets for charging. Staff walks your food order out when ready. The daily bathroom code is printed on your bill. Still not sure if you are expected to bus your own table or not, but the bus buckets are conveniently located... If this was our local place take-out would be the way to go. read more

I went in and ordered a Red Rooster, to go. It's a sandwich with egg, cheese, and bacon, as well as some sauce. I ordered at 11:06 AM, and didn't receive it until 11:24 AM, at which point, after pointing out that 3 people who ordered sandwiches after me had already received theirs, the cashier said that I had experienced a "typical" wait, and that "if you understood the process, you'd know that was a typical wait time." Nearly 20 minutes is a ridiculous time to wait for a simple sandwich to go. I mentioned that no other cafe in Northampton takes that long to produce a sandwich, especially not one so basic, and the cashier said "you should go to other cafes then." If you're in a rush, I don't recommend putting faith in The Roost to produce anything for you quickly, no matter how simple the task may be. Sandwich was sub-par. If you have a morning to kill waiting for one, at least add some avocado. read more

Everything was good minus the smoothie which was pretty gross but that would keep me from going back there to try other things on the menu. I like the set up and the customer service was good. This is my first time here, looking for a place that would be open later that serves good coffee. This is definitely the place. I will post a sandwich board with reasonably priced soups and salads, they have a pastry case with some amazing things, and then really what I needed, a delicious peanut butter gluten-free cookie. I don't always have to have gluten free pastries , but I'm always intrigued. This must have been one of the most delicious cookies I have ever had, and it was gluten free. My partner had the Molasses cookie and that was equally good. There's something to be said for some extra crunchy sugar on top of your cookie. They have a great setup for seating , and offer different events during the week. the servers are also super cute and friendly. The owner did not want his picture taken, but you should come here and tell me what you think. ;) Finally, besides some really good coffee, they do have extraordinary alcoholic beverages including Allagash White mixed with some kind of berry that I really would have craved if I wasn't looking for coffee. The roost is indeed located in the uber hip town of Northhampton, MA but I honestly think you could shoot a segment of Portlandia here. The vibe is great and the mix of customers inside is as eclectic as carrot top after a double expresso and some edibles. I was giddy to try the tea as there was a staff member specifically dedicated to putting together all of the loose leaf teas in the most adorable little teapots you ever did see. The peachy green and raspberry detox were both well prepared. On to the food: The gluten free cookies did not make my miss my moms baking (sorry mom)! .... The peanut butter varietal was especially delicious. Unfortunately, the carrot cake was over the top in the sweet department. I ate some, avoiding the insulin spiking frosting and then pretty much ignored it the rest of the night. Too much sugar for me. There were plenty of sandwiches and wraps with numerous vegetarian options. Too bad, we ate at the brewery around the corner prior. It's certainly rare (for me) see a cafe with a liquor license, as it's definitely uncommon at home (Long guyland) but I totally dig that they serve local beer here. Good place to work as well as parking is usually available on the street beside. The staff is great and the food options are great. They have good options even for those who are not into caffeine. I loved the Roost! We had a little time to waste for our dinner reservation at a restaurant nearby. There were about 8-10 of us who popped in here to grab a snack/drink. There was such a good range of options - from beer to wine to spiked teas! My coworker and I had a wine and beer respectively. We then ordered a charcuterie plate with salami, cheese, bread, and some other goodies since we could mix and match. The service was quick and we were able to drink (really chug) our drinks and leisurely eat our snack in the 30ish minutes we had. My colleague pointed us here originally because she spent quite a bit time there while in college studying and the like. However, this is just a cute spot to grab a snack or drinks with friends if you're in the area. Or of course, plop down with your homework and a glass of wine! Oh my gosh, I wish The Roost was around when I was a Smithie. It's a hip, casual, and fun spot all in one! Perfect for studying, working, reading, enjoying a drink/meal by yourself or with friends. The iced coffee is good and strong, the Yenta sandwich fresh and delish, and ho my word, THAT DESSERT DISPLAY. Once again, if the husband wasn't around to police my actions, I'd have hightailed it off with 99% of the treats in there...fortunately, I was rewarded with one ginormo chocolate eclair. The chocolate and puff pastry were fantastic; I'd say it actually could use a little less filling, just because there was so much of it, which takes away from the chocolate and pastry. Love this place to study or just meet someone for coffee. The coffee is good, I highly recommend the mac n' cheese, and the beers are all usually good. I actually come here pretty frequently, but the only reason I don't give the Roost all 5 stars is just the vibe I get when I come to study. They shut off their wifi on weekends and turn it off at a certain time on weekdays, which is fine. Although it seems a bit excessive, especially for a coffee shop in a college town. I think a 2-3 hour limit would be a nicer option and just as effective at discouraging people camping out. I just get a bad vibe from the feeling that I'm getting rushed out. I'll still have a few sips in my cup, and someone will come by and grab it so I'm obligated to either leave or immediate buy another. And, it's not like I only buy one coffee and camp out all day. I'm usually buying 3 drinks and a full meal spaced out between an afternoon. Their menu is pretty extensive and probably will have something to suite your taste. Drinks range from teas, espresso variants, fruity smoothies, energy smoothies, wine, beer and spiked shakes. For food, the sandwich + daily salad/soup combo is always great. You can come by during breakfast or granola, waffles, quiche, breakfast sandwiches. Later in the day you could get sandwiches, soups, salad, and if you want to get a little fancy a build-your-own-board. If you're looking for something sweet they have a whole display case of scones, cookies, pastries, pies, tarts, and gigantic cakes. You can't go wrong with a fruit tart or a pecan tart, and my friend has emphasized time and time again the chocolate stout cake is amazing. Their options aren't just wide ranging in quantity but there's an option for almost everyone, including vegetarian, vegan, and GF friends! The only struggle is parking, as they don't have their own space, so you have to find street parking. FYI, the small space next door isn't theirs!!! Thank you for opening such a hip and yummy spot on the corner of Market and Bridge Streets in Northampton. Despite the plethora of cafes in a one mile radius, we truly needed something right in this neighborhood that is locally owned and managed that has; 1) truly delicious homemade food and desserts; 2) reasonably priced beer and wine; 3) a clean and pleasing ambience; 4) friendly service; 5) decent hours; 6) free wifi; 7) welcoming atmosphere for both hipsters and townies; and 8) owners willing to fork over some money to create an attractive facade to a high-visibility building. It's been open two days, I've been there twice and everyone I know is raving about it. I've eaten the brownies- fudgy and generous, the grape leaves- tangy and fresh; and had both well-selected white and red wines. There are very few apparent deficits, but here are a couple: the chairs and tables are visually charming, but not all are very comfortable. (Booths are excellent, though.) However, hard chairs/cold tables may be good for discouraging hangers-on from monopolizing the place, sucking down free internet for hours after ordering one coffee- ruining it for the rest of us. All in all the place is truly DELIGHTFUL; thoughtful, delicious, and convivial. I highly recommend The Roost for a meal, a coffee or a late-night drink. read more
