The Roost

Just - no. So we've eaten here once or twice prior. Food is always passable, and we kept trying it because we really like a good breakfast spot. We hadn't been back since our October visit, when the reataurant had pretty much cleared out after the breakfast rush on a Sunday, and most of the staff was gathered around the bar area chatting. Hostess: 2? Us: Yes, please. Hostess: This way. and proceeds to seat us at a table I can only describe as FILTHY. Not just the surface, which was so sticky it had bits of napkin or straw paper stuck to it, but beneath the table it appeared to have an entire box of cheerios on the floor. Clearly there had been children prior to us but come on, can you not clean that up between guests? Mond you - when we walked in most of the staff was gathered around the bar, chatting. Time to lean, time to clean - especially in the food service industry! This past Sunday - 2/2/25, we stopped in for a bite before perusing the trasures at their next-door neighbor, 8th and Main. My chocolate chip pancake was tasty, glass of milk cold, and underneath the table? Just a few crinkled up napkins and a empty sugar packet wrapper. My husband ordered the waffle combo with scrambled eggs which is about as basic as you can get. As he forked in the eggs, he found not one, but two loooong black hairs underneath the eggs, plastered to the plate by the grease. Yeah, we're done. We paid for the food and left. My advice? If they allow the dining room floor to be THAT cluttered and dirty, just imagine the kitchen!

Good was very good, atmosphere was good. Our hostess was very good. We sat near the kitchen. Heard the chef yelling "Haley" a lot. Not sure what that was about. But I would definitely make this a "go to Spot"

The food was delicious! The service was even better, and the restaurant was packed with happy regulars. Definitely a great breakfast date place. This place is not to be missed!

The Roost is a great classic in Chico. They use fresh ingredients, the restaurant is well-maintained and cleaned, and the staff is always helpful and kind.

Service was fantastic, staff was incredibly friendly and brought our drinks to us outside. I had meant for this to be a pit stop for coffee but the outdoor patio was so nice, we ended up sitting in the shade with the pups and taking our time before our looong drive back to SoCal. Black coffee. The beans were from Kenya, which is not my partner's bean country of choice but he said the coffee was good anyway. Oat milk latte. My incredibly particular mom said this was the best latte she's ever had. Dad and I were shook. Iced cinnabon oat milk latte. Surprisingly balanced. Cinnamon forward, which I like, but not overbearing. Lighter on the maple flavor, which I'm grateful for, as maple can get real heavy, real quick for me. Carrot zucchini bread. This was slightly flour-y to my palette, but overall, not bad. Moist, and not too sweet.

I ordered at least 35 minutes before I needed to pick it up and got there, and not only did they not have my order, they ran out of everything to even make a substitute, entirely. The children that work there, probably should go back to daycare. Fake smiles, fake professionalism, just fake all around. Except for the tall doofus that came to the window, he didn't know how to fake it yet so he was just an unprofessional dumbass.

Best part? My gluten-eating family who could have gone ANYWHERE also loved their meals. No pity plates. Everyone won. We asked for a table outside because she can't hear well, and the cafe was bustling and loud. The staff seated us, but had to move tables around outside. The hostess and a "regular" of the cafe said things like "this is what we do in a tourist economy." "We have to accommodate the tourists." As if we were a bother and they were bending over backward to accommodate us. Because my mother in law was there, and she is emotionally raw right now, I avoided conflict. So I'll say now, what I wanted to say to those snarky, rude employees Thursday: My husband's family has had a plot in the Taylorsville cemetery for longer than those two ladies been alive -- combined. His grandmother had 2 restaurants in Greenville. His mother is a fixture in the community, living through the Dixie fire and coming back to rebuild her life. Now she'll bury her husband there. My sister and brother in law worked in public service in Quincy for decades. We aren't tourists. And even if we were, you were incredibly unwelcoming. You made a sad day worse. The food was fine.

Might be difficult to navigate for those with mobility issues, though. It seems to be a popular spot with both young and old patrons. There's an area at the back with what looked like art supplies and things to keep folks entertained. Parking is semi-tight right outside but it's doable even with a midsize SUV. I got there around noon on a Wednesday and it was a little busy but I was the only one in line for about 5 minutes before I ordered and while I ordered. It took a little longer than I expected to get the wrap I ordered, but I didn't mind. The Smokin' Veggie wrap was VERY good, especially when I added some hot sauce (they have several options by the water station at the back)! And it was a great portion, too! I only ate half there and ate the other half later for a late lunch part 2. I had hoped to get a pastry, but I was a bit disappointed with the pastry selection -- it seemed to mostly be muffins and croissants from Costco and Safeway or something. I didn't get a drink this time, but maybe next time. But the wrap was delish! Thanks!
