I am almost reluctant to describe how much I enjoy going to "The Roadside Diner" because I like being able to get in and get a seat without a wait. Clean tables and menus. Friendly and efficient staff. Food ... oh the food is truly for "foodies". I can always find something eclectic while my husband smiles and almost inhales his more standard choices. Both of us always full after eating our different personal choices. It would almost be criminal not to bring up their soups. So good that once this month both my husband and I had cups of lobster bisque before our breakfast entrees. Last weekend's breakfast I had a cup of lemon chicken orzo soup that was rich, creamy, lemony goodness bathing the chunks of chicken. Today at lunch I had a delightful tomato basil that made me think of my mom with every spoonful. My husband had a delicious matzo ball soup where I could smell the chicken and simmered vegetables from across the table. We are working our way through the menu with many forays into their ever changing "specials" menu. Today lunch consisted of three pork chops, mashed potatoes and corn for my hubby. I expect him to sink into his barcalounger and sleep the afternoon away before tomorrow's blizzard. I had succulent chopped beef that was smothered under mushrooms, onions and gravy. Mashed potatoes with melted cheese and scallions and corn on the side. Who knew I would want hot honey on anything much less a breakfast item? This restaurant gets that people like me want to try new flavors amidst the familiar so earlier this month I had a breakfast burrito lined with pancakes, filled with eggs, sausage and bacon then deep fried like a chimichanga. Crunchy goodness. But it was the addition of hot honey that made the item sing! A great way to try hot honey IF you have not explored it elsewhere because you can request it on the side in a small syrup container and then you get to control how much you try. Me? I hope all the old web-based pages that still refer to the prior operation can be deleted or cleaned up to avoid confusion. The owners are wonderful hard-working, family people who also own the Keyport Broad Street diner. The friendly service is provided by people happy to work here who also work in Keyport. The outside may give you pause and thus drive right by. I went based upon comments from other Yelpers and stopped in for lunch. There is a nice variety of items of the menu. The staff are rather friendly, but initially came off cold. There was good interaction between the servers and their customers. The cook/owner would also come out to chat and check on things. More than excellent roadside dinner near the Wall Circle at the juncture of Routes 33 & 34. Never been here before and ran across it while on a leisurely drive enjoying the weather on July 4, 2021. This a diner straight out of yesteryear - it's small - this isn't a Johnny Rockets! :) They've got the traditional diner menu. Omelets, sandwiches, soups.... I had the roast beef (which apparently they roast on their own) and my GF had the Mexican Omelet. I can tell you that both were suburb ... but it was the Omelet which stole the show. It was seriously one of the best Omelets that I have ever had. The jalapeños in it gave it the perfect bite. I'd definitely come back here just to have one of those. French fry lover? They have your choice between fresh or frozen (for some reason some people prefer frozen fries, I don't understand that, but to each their own. I highly recommend the fresh which come with skin on them. Delicious! So would I recommend this place??? Absolutely!!! I will definitely be back! Railcar type diner. Small...Some booths, and a counter...railcar type windows and door... This is what I want when I go into a New Jersey diner, from the friendly and funny waitress, the cook who comes and asks how the food is, to the other patrons and their half-overheard conversations...ahhh,...the music over the PA system...being at the junction of two state highways: Routes 33 and 34...cars and trucks going by outside the window. I felt like I was back in 1959. I had the western omelet (onion was crisp), home fries, toast, coffee, and water. My partner had a regular burger with lettuce and tomato...and French fries. We were at no times rushed...and the place was clean. The waitress explained how we could re-arrange what we wanted to eat (because I had wanted some French fries, too) so as to save on the bill. Nice! The coffee was ok (I'm not expecting gourmet here) and we had two cups each. We sat at a booth (my bench was a little rickety) at a little past 11AM on a Monday. By the time we left, the place was starting to fill up. Hope to be back in a few weeks...maybe tomorrow...hmmm, going up to Delicious Orchards...I'll sit at the counter and get something plus pie, and maybe a milkshake (if I have room). read more
