When I…read morebecame pregnant, I decided that I wanted to do small group classes or privates instead of a big class or my own instructing at home to be sure I was working out safely. The privates are really good. The small group classes are odd. It's about 5 people usually, and everyone is doing something different - which in theory sounds great (individualized). However, the instructor just quickly gives you an instruction and then walks away and is on to the next person. Therefore, you are often left not being completely clear what you're supposed to do (and there's nobody to imitate) or finishing your exercise and laying there waiting for her to come back to you (wasting your time). Also, they're $50 a class. I enjoyed it, but it didn't seem worth it to continue - for the price or the workout.

As an amateur athlete since college, I'm guessing I would have performed better and had many fewer injuries had I made a better attempt at maintaining a supple muscular system. It all came crashing down on me last year when I realized after years of terrible knee pain that I would need a knee replacement. I didn't even think people my age could have knee replacements, but apparently the average age of TKR is getting younger and younger. I'm two months into my right TKR and am now able to ride my bicycle in the basement, swim and do yoga (with some modifications). Problem is my body is so tight and messed up from limping and lying in bed for the last two months. Heck....limping for the last 10 years. I felt like I needed some help with flexibility so I can actually make the yoga work for me. Searching for flexibility videos, I came across BeLYMBR who thankfully have a studio right down the road in Darien. I immediately made an appointment. I have been looking for something like this for years and was never able to find a place (other than Thai massage) that focuses only on stretching. The studio is situated with small walled off areas with massage like tables in them. My therapist Mike spent ten minutes with me talking about the sitch with my body and figuring out what areas to focus on. We settled on as much of my body as we had time for in 30 minutes. I knew almost immediately as he started working on me that 30 minutes would not be enough. Using progressive dynamic stretching, he began working on my legs and hips isolating specific muscles and joints. He was exceptionally careful and I surprised at how many movements it takes to stretch just your quads and hip joints. We started with me on the table where he focused on my legs, hips and glutes and then we moved to a chair where he worked on my shoulders and neck. I actually felt taller when he was done with me. They have individual packages and monthly packages which in my opinion are very reasonable. Many people go in twice a week for 60 minutes to really work on their flexibility. Others will go in after a workout for 30 minutes to work out the kinks. I'm overjoyed that I found this place. Michael told me they are getting ready to open one in L.A. Lisa, the founder and main instructor at London Barre is a powerhouse of knowledge, and technique. But she is also a fun and engaging teacher who makes you really feel the burn with laughter. I'm super happy to have found this place that focuses on proper alignment, and mindful movement at the barre. It's like strengthening and toning combining physical therapeutic moves and injury prevention for lower lumbar and knee issues. Meaning it's on the crest of future physical fitness.
