Prior to Christmas I booked a "Pedi Party for Two" for my mom and I. It was described on their website as a: Side-by-side treatment with softening soak and scrub, followed by nail care, trimming, buffing, and gel polish. Includes a bar beverage and a chocolate lava cake. Most of that was true, but I have to admit it was the chocolate lava cake that secured the appointment, because my mom is a chocoholic... and it was the chocolate lava cake that was neither offered, nor received. The staff was lovely and the nail technicians were competent, but the overall vibe was lacking. If there was music on, it was too low to hear. The central view was of a wall hanging fountain that was dirty and had a power cord hanging over the top of it. We opted out of gel polish, for personal reasons, and were fairly astounded at the slim pickings for regular polish... not even a basic, classic red was available (and that's what we were there for, at Christmastime). Lastly, because there were appointments stacked right behind us, understandably at the time of year, we were dismissed in flip flops. I was surprised there weren't drying lights available to us to wait under until our polish dried, in another area so the pedicure chairs could be evacuated and made ready for the next customers. It felt very slipshod to be walking my 75+yo mom out of the resort, in December, in barefoot and sandals. Because she was cold, she put her shoes on before exiting and messed up her polish. I know this isn't exactly the fault of the nail salon, but had we been given drying options, it wouldn't have happened. I was asked by the spa, afterward, in an automatic text form, to review my experience. I filled out a review, but I exceeded the allotted characters and was only able to address the lack of chocolate, promised in the price of the service, and the shortage of standard color options in the regular polish selections. It's been eleven days since our appointments, I understand Christmas happened between then and now and took that into account, but I have been surprised that no one reached out to address my dissatisfaction in the pricey package. Had I been contacted by the spa to simply acknowledge my concerns, I would have kept my review private. read more

I knew coming to refuge that the amenities were limited, but all the reviews I read said the services were exceptional so I was willing to pay the price just for a good massage. However, though my therapist was very kind and the massage felt okay I still left with tension and didn't really feel any difference to how I felt before coming in. She also said in the beginning of the treatment she would do my whole body, but never ended up doing my legs or feet. Also, the pool is closed for retiling which I wish would have been told to me before booking as it is one of their only amenities besides a very small sauna and a salt room. They don't even provide conditioner in the showers. I cannot say the treatment is worth the expensive pricing. Staff were friendly, but I do not think I would come here again. read more

This was my first spa experience ever. 46 years old, never been to a spa before. From the first timers perspective. This was an enjoyable experience. There is unfamiliarity so I don't know if it's exponentially better, but this first time event was very enjoyable. The service requested was the couples hot stone massage. The website on an iOS was not user friendly and became frustrating to try to book the service. A phone call did the trick. Showing up we were greeted well, filled out the necessary paperwork and were led away to change for our comfort. I'm not a photojournalist nor did I feel it was appropriate to pic flick away in a place where people are trying to escape and relax. But, I got one, and the waiting area was clean, relaxing sand comfortable. Hands down the massage was great (see what I did there ), the masseuses were professional, quiet and thorough. The quiet was the best part. That's the part of this experience I enjoyed the most. Even in the middle of downtown Reno, it was quiet, had a pleasant aroma, and just felt insulated. My hubby and I decided to check out The Refuge Spa for a fun afternoon together. We booked the Pedi Party for Two, which includes two pedicures, two drinks, and a snack platter for two. We filled out our pre-visit questionnaires and I was sure to indicate that I have celiac - so no food, lotions, or anything containing gluten. The spa called me to let me know that they currently only have one nail tech but that they'd be happy to still book and we'd just need longer for the service. We were totally fine with this. Upon arrival, the spa was fresh and smelled incredible. We were directed to check in electronically and then told to go wait in the service room. The nail tech, Carla, was incredibly nice. The chairs are comfy, include heat and massage functions, and even blankets and pillows in case you really want to get cozy. There is a button to press for someone to come and get your drink order, so I did. I ordered the lavender bourbon bliss, which was delicious and refreshing, and asked them to please bring the gluten free snack plate. It took quite some time and they brought a cute snack plate with two types of cheeses, grapes, dried cranberries, some almonds, and chocolate covered pretzels. I called them back in to ask if these were gluten free. They were not, so they left this tray with my husband and were putting together a small gluten free plate for me. They apologized and brought the new tray in. My husband couldn't stop raving about a cheese on the platter called "Red Dragon" so I looked it up. It also contained Ale and was not gluten free. This was incredibly disappointing and kind of ruined the experience for me. All in all - I'd go back for services but I'd be cautious of all products to make sure they are gluten free. The salon and experience was honestly so beautiful. The lounges and scents were so thoughtfully curated and elevated the whole experience. Sadly, I'm just disappointed in the results of a $200+ facial. I really thought my skin would be GLOWING but instead, I walked out with a cut to my face and now a scar and peeling skin. I let the receptionist know that I was unsure of which facial would be best for my skin type. Upon arrival, I felt rushed and the esthetician simply said that the Forever Young treatment, "is good for ALL skin types". There was no follow-up on skin goals. I've had a facial before and that esthetician made sure every product was selected and tailored to my skin. It's been a week since I let them know about my cut in the internal review but no one has reached out to remedy the situation. Just confirms my suspicion that they don't really care about clients. Not a terrible experience, but definitely expected more from this place. Just feels like a waste to what I thought would be a treat, an investment to my skin goals. Now I have a scar. read more

The moment I noticed the lovely eucalyptus fragrance as I walked out of the elevator towards the spa, I felt my body slowly start to relax and mind chatter drift away. It did take a few moments to quiet my mind but what a place to ease me into that. The Refuge name is perfect. Slowing my breath was an old memory but this place reminded me of the peace and tranquility I can transform my state of mind by doing this simple and gentle self care. Self awareness. Self love. The dark long haired gal who greeted me and gave me the tour was lovely. I would have enjoyed something from the bar but because it was Mothers Day, they set up a nice tea party including two teas, finger sandwiches and sweets, including macaroons. After I settled into my robe, which was a nice weight, and put my things into my locker, I decided to first jump into the shower and freshen up with their lovely smelling soaps and shampoos. Then I sampled the tea and sandwiches before sitting in the Refuge quiet waiting area where they had guest books scattered throughout filled with stories and messages from previous spa guests. (This was actually my favorite part of the experience). I enjoyed reading the stories of others here at the spa... I am touched with the sharing... The stories are inspiring and some with wisdom I am profoundly grateful to have experienced. To see handwritten notes from strangers is breathtaking and fills me with hope that humanity is still abundant in this world and peace is possible. Stories of young moms, aged adults with wisdom and women who struggle in their relationships and come here to reset to be able to face the world... even men sharing amazing simple gratitudes. Couples in love still and ladies who love themselves. It soothes my soul to read these stories.. thank you refuge. My treatment of choice was the canna-bliss massage with an added hydrating scalp treatment. They also included a foot scrub and lotion foot treatment. I wasn't sure what to expect with the cannabliss but next time I will opt for just a massage. I enjoyed the scalp treatment. Because it was the weekend plus Mother's Day, it was a bit busy. Spa Day with my daughter for Mother's Day. My daughter had a massage while I opted for a facial. I loved everything about the experience! On top of a wonderful facial the esthetician massaged my scalp and upper body-heaven! They have a sauna, bar, tea room and various relaxation rooms. I got a Groupon for my husband to try the floating pod. While I was waiting for him to come out the receptionist greeted me. Offered me water. I got an opportunity to tour the facility. They were very nice and answered my questions. I was able to do a body polish massage for myself the same day. There is a really nice waiting room where they come get you. They gave me a whole experience and I really needed it. My aesthetician was very nice great conversation. Overall I really enjoyed myself. One of the workers had a miscommunication and told my husband to go to the lobby instead of waiting for me to come back to the spa. I understand things happen and after that I needed the massage even more. So I guess it all worked out. I will recommend this place. The service here was great (massage therapists and spa staff), but unfortunately my low star review is about their Groupon listing and how they dealt with this discrepancy. I got a Groupon for a 50 minute couples massage, which was ~$140. At checkout it said I would be getting a couples massage, but my receipt didn't reflect that, so I called the refuge spa to make sure I had purchased the correct service. The receptionist assured me that it was good for a couples massage and even asked my guest's name to write down in the system. Today we had our appointment where we enjoyed the massage and our spa time there, but upon checkout I was asked for my *second* Groupon receipt, which of course I was confused about. They explained that I needed TWO couples massage Groupons for the service. I was incredibly upset because nowhere in the description did it mention needing one for each person. Why on earth would I have thought to buy two separate couples massage services?? I'm upset that the Groupon description was unclear, and also that when I called to confirm my service the receptionist didn't notice that I only bought one. I could have at least gotten a heads up to expect this charge. I had added a deep tissue add-on upon entering the spa, but I wouldn't have if I knew I would be charged so much. With the extra couples massage charge, the add-on, and tip, I ended up paying $420. At that rate I should have just gone to a different spa. I would have enjoyed our visit so much more if this was transparent on the Groupon service page and if someone had let me know PRIOR to receiving service that I hadn't yet covered both people. Overall it is incredibly unintuitive to have to buy two coupons for a couples massage, why the heck would someone only buy ONE person's couples massage? It is a couple, not a single. I encourage management to amend this so another customer doesn't have the same surprise as me. I wish I had received a discount (on top of the deal from Groupon) considering this inconvenience. read more

Beautiful spa located inside a non gaming hotel in downtown Reno. I enjoyed the outdoor pool on the 4th floor for a swim and relaxation before my massage. I loved the co-ed infrared sauna to relax my muscles. Very nice relaxation lounge before the massage. Lemon water containers for refreshments. My massage included a glass of wine and chocolates. I loved sitting at The Rise Bar inside the spa in my cozy spa robe. This spa is not large and has less amenities then the larger casino spas but still very enjoyable. read more

I felt like I took a mini vacation after leaving the Refuge Spa. I purchased a deal that included a Quad Spa pedicure, beverage and access to the pool. The spa itself was very modern, clean and sleek looking. I came to learn from my nail technician that the same owner of Dolce Vita owns the Refuge and it is locally owned and separate from the Renaisssance. The pool was perfect, in that it was not too big, and not overly crowded during the time that I went. There are service menu cards that you can take with you, and can order food and drinks (spa, pool, or during service). The staff at the spa were very nice, and attentive. The pool was the perfect temperature for the 100 degree weather, and there were lounge chairs everywhere! There was actually a bride and groom that took professional photos there. The sangria was pretty good, not super sweet. Upon getting the pedicure, I ordered a pineapple mimosa, and that drink alone would have me coming back often! The best part of my experience goes to Sarah! She was phenomenal, I felt like I was visiting an old friend even though this was our first time meeting. This was actually a Mother's day gift and my mom loved her equally so. Our toes came out great, and received the ultimate pampering. She provided great information on care of gel toes and removal, and also information on coming back to use the pool ($25 spa pass) and locals get 10 % off- M-Thursday. I definitely want to come back already! and now that I know they have food on the menu that makes for the perfect pool day plus Spa service. Did not really get a feel of it. I included a peppermint foot treatment and i totally forgot that i had it included and never got it. I support small business in Reno but we also want our money's worth. Why waste time in all those pre forms when they do not even read what you want? What a beautiful spa! I've been to almost every one in town and I am totally impressed! My spa service was a dry brushing, then salt body polish, then a light stone crop oil massage, for 80 min. Unbelievably relaxing. Shakina was my therapist, and she was perfect. They have the most incredibly hydrating waters with different flavors all over the spa. There's a locker room with steam showers and a sauna. These are pretty standard at all of our wonderful, award winning spas in town but they also have a tiny bar in the middle of the spa where you can ring the bell and have someone come and make you a drink right there! They have some wonderful refreshing creative cocktails on the menu in addition to champagne, which is what my friends and i usually have on spa day. Wanted to treat my partner to a day at the spa for his birthday. I found a Groupon for the float tank at the Refuge and the reviews of this spa were good so I decided to give it a go. When we got there for our appointment, the person who greeted us was nice enough, but nothing was really explained to us about what would go on for our spa day experience and she seemed very rushed. I felt like maybe they were understaffed or something because I didn't feel like the person helping me even had time (or didn't want me to) for me to ask a question. Anyway, I got dressed and waited in the lounge for the staff to get me for the service. I was informed they would pick me up there 5 minutes before my service but I wasn't until well over 15 minutes after my service appointment time. This was annoying because I made sure I was on time for the appointment and I felt like my time wasn't valued. At the start of the service, nothing was really explained well and I was left with many questions. I mean, you're getting in a dark enclosed space with water in it, so I think it should be explained to you what goes on. Every interaction with this staff member was rushed and honestly not relaxing like you'd expect at a spa. The float tank itself was lack-luster and in a tiny room that made me feel uncomfortable. This definitely was not the zen environment I was hoping for. The tank experience was alright but no way did either of us need an entire hour each of it. In regards to the amenities, there's a small coed sauna with enough room for three maybe four very small people max. Nothing special and not a traditional sauna experience- just a hot room with mood lighting. There was a lounge with hard couches and a few snacks and flavored water. The locker room with showers and vanities was pretty nice but there's only so much you can do there. Other than that, there's a tiny pool shared with hotel guests. If you ask me, my idea of relaxing doesn't involve other peoples' kids throwing pool toys. I would never pay for a day pass here or encourage anyone to if they just wanted to use the amenities. Not impressed and I wish I could get my money back. This was definitely not what I'd call a "spa" or a relaxing day by any means. read more

What an experience! I had a whole spa day followed by a birthday dinner planned for my friend's 50th birthday party. We all were in the relaxation lounge waiting for our 1 o'clock massage appointments, and my 3 friends were all called for their treatments and here I was sitting in the lounge waiting for my name to be called. 10 minutes go by past my appointment time and still nothing. A gal comes in and ask my name and confirms my 1 o'clock appointment but doesn't give me any explanations. Another 15 minutes go by...still nothing. I finally go up to the front desk and ask what's going on. Turns out there were 3 Mary's at the spa and the masseuse that was meant for me took another Mary back for my appt. They told me there were no other masseuse until an hour later. Taking the later time was not an option since it would mess up my friend group plans for the day. The Refuge staff felt really bad and gave me another option to come back a different day to make up my massage and ensured they would take care of it. Fast forward two weekends later when I came back for my Re-scheduled massage. I had Skyler as my masseuse and I have to say it was one of the best massages I've ever gotten. She hit every pressure point and literally massaged out every knot on my body. Highly recommend her. I also liked how she asked a couple times throughout the massage if the pressure of the massage was good as she could adjust if needed. Amazing! I didn't utilize any of their other amenities, but they do have a small gym, sauna and bar onsite, as well as a rooftop pool (which was currently closed for the season) that is included with any treatment. It's a small but mighty spa. Tip: come on Sundays, the spa isn't as busy and you can truly relax. Checking out of the spa there was some confusion on what I would be charged for the massage as the receptionist on site that day wasn't aware of the previous situation. A call from Robyn - the spa manager the next day reassured me they had taken care of the massage as originally promised. This place was wonderful! I have been to this spa quite a few times, and every time the service is impeccable. Kaye took care of us in the VIP suite, and she was so attentive and fun. Everyone raved about their treatments ( facials, massages, deprivation tank). This spa is smaller than the other ones in Reno. I appreciate the individualization of it and how quaint it is. My call was promptly returned and Barbara walked me through times of available services and made recommendations for lunch at the Renaissance as well. I've been to quite a few very nice spas and The Refuge was right up there if not better. The Spa itself was beautiful and well appointed. It was set apart by the amazing guest experience. Staff made every effort to accommodate my situation, communicate it to their team members, and follow up to ensure my satisfaction. Allison was the best massage therapist from whom I have had the benefit or receiving therapy. The entire experience was so lovely that I shared the news with my weekend hosts and took my daughter back for services on our way back out of town! I would have given them a 5 star review, however my entire experience was affected by how dirty the entire spa was. Recently I signed up for the Ultimate Pampering Package. After I checked in and changed I was never checked on again and never once offered a drink in the entire 7 hours I was there. Instead, after I was fully relaxed and didn't feel like running around looking for a spa employee, I called the spa to order some refreshments and asked them to bring it to me, which they did. There were VERY limited options when it came to guest amenities. As usual the bar was a ghost town, a couple bottles of bottom shelf liquor and not a single bartender/employee in sight as I sat there in silence. I was very surprised how little amenities they have. The entire spa seemed desolate. For example, if you sign up for the Ultimate Package, you are encouraged to come early to relax and enjoy your guest amenities while you wait for all 4 services (which are an hour each). You are given a FULL day pass which means you have more time after all your services to continue to enjoy the amenities. However, the amenities come with... 1. A small infrared sauna, which the benches had a horrendously dirty and sweat ridden cover that one had no choice but to sit/lie on. 2. No inside pool, but there is one outside hot tub that had a nice temperature but seriously needed to be re-tiled, it had dirty dishes from the morning, and when I say the pool area was dirty... that was putting it mildly. Also, (and I swear I'm not being dramatic).. afterward, my wet clothes didn't smell like chlorine after, they smelled really really bad like swamp water. Kind of concerning. 3. That's actually it. That's the end of the amenities list. The rest of the amenities is a massage bed that you pay extra for. The salt room has no salt that you actually put on your body, it's a salt wall that you sit next to. So basically it's you and the same 5 women sharing the hot sauna all day because there's not much else to do. Once the sun hits the pool full force (with no cover) no one really wants to be out there. There are endless places to sit and relax. I think they could give up one of the many guest lounges to offer for more guest amenities. There are also WAY too many private rooms for services. There are 12 empty rooms sitting there at any given time every time I'm there. If this spa really wants more guests buying the Ultimate Package, I would suggest more amenities. I feel like I paid for the services and so much extra when, for the most part, all there was to do was sit in the guest lounge or sit in the hot sauna or sit in the other guest lounge or at the empty bar. Last bit- the overall cleanliness. The women's locker room was pretty gross. There were blood drops, dirt and foot prints on the floor of the only two bathrooms available. It was obvious the bathrooms had not been cleaned all morning (or even from the night before). The rug and the benches by the lockers were absolutely filthy. The massage rooms are not cleaned afterward, there were greasy foot marks all over the floor when I started my massage treatments. As I said the outside pool area was a sad place. It needs major renovation, the faded spray painted art could use some love, the pool and tub need to be re-tiled and the ground around the pool and hot tub were brown from so much dirt. I have a feeling the manager/owner probably runs things very... old fashioned. They expect their young employees to deep clean instead of hiring a cleaning team. Very mediocre approach. All in all, the three stars I'm giving are simply because my services were AMAZING. They were all professionals and very kind. I wanted to stay until they closed (which was at 7pm), but they started unplugging machines, turning off the sauna and closing everything down around 5:45-6pm. The employees' incessant need to take off early basically forced me to leave the spa early, which made me kind of sad because I technically paid to be there till 7pm. I let the front desk know of the cleanliness situation and how it affected my experience but there wasn't much that could be done except offer me a free beverage. I'm not sure I'll be coming back, definitely not for the ultimate package. I think I'll check out their sister spa or just go to California the next time I want a full pampering experience. read more

My experience with their nail salon was a complete let down from start to finish. Their services are pretty pricey compared to a standard nail salon but I was willing to pay the extra because you gain access to their other spa amenities. For what it's worth the locker room, waiting room, bar, etc were all gorgeous and if my experience hadn't been what it was I would have made them my go to nail salon in Reno. To start, while picking a color, I was shocked at the limited options. What girl doesn't spend time online picking out fun colors/designs before a vacation to have the perfect looking nails that fit the mood? So all of the options I had saved to my phone quickly went out the window because I had very few options to choose from and none of the colors matched what I wanted. But it was too late to find another nail salon so I just accepted that it was what it was. I then asked if they did designs and she gave me a book that showed stamp designs. When I inquired about those she said the girl who worked there before her took them with her so they didn't have the stamps. In the middle of the service she let me know that their stone warmer was broken so they were going to upgrade me to get free paraffin wax instead. I told her that the service I booked already included paraffin wax so I hadn't been expecting hot stones anyways. She told me it did not include it and that it was an upgrade. I showed her on the website where it says it is in included and she said that "Oh well there are disagreements on what services are offered since there are two locations". I would have ignored all of these disappoints because I could choose to go somewhere that offered designs and color options in the future but then, 2 days into my vacation, my nails looked like this. The reason I get gel nail polish for vacations is because it doesn't chip. So I am not even sure if they used the correct polish on me because I have never seen this happen before. On my trip I got a call from the manager that they would refund me for the manicure portion of my service. They said since I paid in cash they would be happy to give me a credit but I insisted on getting an actual refund. So she said I could come pick up the cash refund at any time when I returned and to just let the front staff know that it was approved by her. When I arrived, the girl working had no idea what I was talking about and said she was unable to look into past clients in the system to try and find a note about my refund. She said the manager would be there in 5 minutes and she could help then. 45 minutes later the manager still was not there but they finally got her on the phone. She told me that they said I had had to give 24 hours notice so that the owner could write me a check. This was not the pick-up protocol I had been told to follow and couldn't believe I had wasted another 45 minutes.
