This is mostly intended for my Virginia friends but when a business excels in so many ways, it…read moredeserves to be noted. Robynn and i have deleberately avoided participating in any black friday shopping for all the reasons we're all so familiar with. But my wife has recently become a "backpacker" and I wanted to get her fitted for a legitimate backpack so we made an exception to our black friday rule and went to the only place I would go to locally backpacking and other outdoor gear, River Rock Outfitter Even though the shop was filled with customers, Keith and April, the owners, immediately greeted us. When April finished with her customer she began the process for fitting my with a backpack. This process which included measuring her torso, what type of backpacking it was for day hikes or multiple day/night trips, types of weather, trying on multiple packs (with weigjts in the pack) took approximately 40 minutes, maybe more, but it was such a pleasant experience, it only seemed like minutes. My wife and April found the perfect pack but since it was not in the color my wife wanted, April placed in on order. We'll return in a day or two, try it on again and walk out with an early Christmas present for my wife we will now be able to share and enjoy many more years of backpacking together with a comfortable backpack. If you want professional backpacking and other outdoor expertise and a wide selection of high quality gear from a polite, courteous, friendly local business, go to River Rock Outfitters; you will not be disappointed.

Prices are on par with what you can find elsewhere, though they have a nice and rotating consignment area consisting of used gear of varying prices. They can also order gear if a specific size, color, or model is desired.

Why I shop online…read more I've used a wheelchair for over 40 years. I like shopping locally. I'm used to people talking down to me, treating me like a non-existent black hole. I'm used to people being mean, rude, and condescending. I get that. I live with that. Yesterday I went into the Mountain Trails store on the Loudoun Street Mall. I've shopped there many times before. The help has always been kind. I use a service dog. He's well trained. He's been in many local stores including the Mountain Trails store. Just this week I spent over $100 in the Mountain Store. Yesterday was one of the most embarrassing episodes of my life. As soon as we rolled through the door a demonic old man began screaming at my dog to get out of his store. "This is my store, and that dog needs to get out", he yelled over and over. He never spoke to me and never used a civil tongue. It was as though he was possessed, screaming, "This is my store, Get out of my store." He was a cretin-like creature spewing a litany of embarrassing, abusive, demeaning shouts that drew the attention of everyone in the Mountain Trails store. Now, he could have come to me expressing his concerns, but he was unable to look me in the eye and speak to me like I was a normal human being. He just kept screaming at my dog. I did what I always do in the face of ignorance, I ignored him, hoping he would just stop. I went to the counter and bought the one object I came for. I paid, and I left. I will never shop at the Mountain Trails again, and I encourage everyone with a disability of any kind to avoid shopping at Mountain Trails on the Loudon Street Mall. Save yourself the embarrassment of the screaming, humiliation, and sadness of this old man. The old man was unable to treat me like the good customer I was. I pity those, like this old man, who harbor, tolerate, and practice such discrimination against all who are different. It is his store as he made perfectly clear and I was unwelcomed. How unfortunate that such bigotry against all who are different gets celebrated. Amazon never sees my wheelchair, my dog, or my disability. And, that is why I will be shopping online. Oh, and it's cheaper, delivered the next day, in any size, color, make or model that my heart desires with a 5% discount every day.
