My personal preference for bars vs clubs has no impact on this review. As I've said before, I'm not the type of person to go to a strip club and complain about naked chics, alright? So here's my take on Red Room from the eyes and ears of the long-gone club bunny inside of me... Red Room is located right down the way from More Than You Can Imagine, in a residential area where a pack of Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis line the streetside for all the commoners to drool over. Door guy was never an issue both times I've visited here (for a Christmas after-party and birthday), but it was 1am with no crowd hovering over the velvet rope, so perhaps that was the case. The venue is split into three sections with three completely different vibes. On the patio you'll find your typical smokers and groups of people-watchers keeping tabs on every person that walks through the gate. Upstairs, oh God. Upstairs is packed. It's a free for all. From the bar to the private tables where folks are poppin' bottles in celebration of yet another day to party, there's not an empty seat or room to stand in the house. And a tiny dance floor with spinning laser lights keeps the party people dancing -- or in my case, haul ass downstairs to the quiet, dark cave of a lounge. In all seriousness, I could hangout here all night. As I did with my companion, just chatting, snapping photos, and talking furniture and upholstery. (As a matter of fact, the various prints and textures gave me great design ideas.) Service was attentive down here, as two well-spoken managers stopped by to see if we needed anything. I normally don't hold it against a business when it comes to their patrons ... until it affects my experience. I must warn that this is the kind of place where no matter how upscale the club/lounge people say it is, patrons here can't buy class or manners. Expect stare downs from the ladies followed by noses turned upward ... and the fellas? Even worse. Don't expect them to say "excuse me" should they shove you over. Really, this is a recurring theme. Think trashy snobbery at its finest. What a bunch of dorks. Fortunately, this is the only establishment where I've seen such behavior, so as long as these folks stick with their kin and inhabit one spot, I'm fine with that. read more

"I'm sorry, but we theres no way you can get in without a reservation on a Friday or Saturday." The door manager turned away four lovely women (of color) as we barely squeezed through the door. The unprofessional doorman lets us know that "When you get up there, let your group know that they are going waaaaaay over their max." Um, that's not my job, asshole. We headed up to the half empty lounge and ordered drinks from dorky bartenders who actually were dancing along to the top 40 music spewing from the mediocre sound system. Someone with no restrain decided that it would be a good idea to throw up tacky carpet, ugly paintings and cheap overstuffed couches and call it interior design. We spotted two middle aged guys lounging on the faux Victorian setees in the back, downing Grey Goose. They were being entertained by a pair of "high class" sex workers clad in polyester animal prints that lazily gyrated their hips to the unimpressive line up of pop songs. After a couple of drinks, we decided no amount of alcohol could transport us to the Meatpacking District and we scooted out promptly. read more

What a waste of time! Red Room is by far, the worst place to go on a Saturday night in Houston. "Dan Green" lets half your party in, waits for them to buy some bottles, then turns the other half of the party away. He claims he is the manager, the place is full, etc. None of which is true. Did I mention the members of the party that are denied entrance are Asian, Latino, or some other non-white race? Do yourself a favor and stay away and do not support an establishment that is openly turning away people based on their race. read more

Pros: - Nice decor and ambiance - DJ was doing a good job; good music and acoustics as well - Good upstairs section - Downstairs is good if you want somewhat quiet place to talk and enjoy your drinks. Cons: - Similar display of 'in the trend' absurd reasoning at the door. - 'You're not on the list' is used to remind people that they've committed a crime by not registering themselves for the list. However, web-site doesn't mention any door policy, nor was there any form to get on the list. If someone answers the phone, then you can ask to get on the list, but it is not very often that someone answers the phone. - The voice mail says 'come check us out' - only to listen to the silly talks at the door. read more

Don't get me wrong, the lounge was the best thing about the place but overall, I wouldn't come back with friends. (-) Door guy is was being a door guy.. Mc Ass-Hole. But unfortunately, it's his job to be one. He actually said, "they pay me to have a heart this little!" It just sucks when you arrive with the birthday girl and door man won't let us in "without a reservation." We had to lose 2 guys in order to get in. (-) DJ wasn't that great. He had some good song choices but transitioning into it was a disaster. (-) It gets really hot upstairs for dancing. Dance to your jam and get some fresh air outside/lounge. + Gorgeous waitresses!! I was not impressed with this place, but in their defense, they are renovating and utilizing the brownstone antique shop in the meantime. I felt like I was standing in my grandmother's parlor with all the antique furniture and art. The vibe was terriBAD. Maybe it's just not my type of crowd, but we found everyone to be quite unfriendly, materialistic and uncomfortable. The staff was just okay--I felt they had a detached, unsocial presence that was very unbecoming. The patio had a couple of table sets supplied with heaters. I think they were attempting a garden ambiance, but it felt very cold and unwelcoming. We stayed for an hour in hopes that it would improve, but the same situation amassed instead. I highly doubt I will return on my own since there are ample places in Houston with a pleasant vibe, in the least. Well, maybe I will come back after the renovations are complete, but only to give it a second chance. I highly doubt expanding the place will replace the dreadful people. read more

Oh Yeah! Not the kool aid man...but the same color red! The got the name right with this place. Red everywhere, but in a tastefully plush way. When I visited the Red Room on my first night, a Friday, at 6:30...I loved it! A cool, upscale lounge vibe with great decor and service. But, I visited tonight and there were two "private parties" with no one there...the doorman wasn't letting anyone in and two girls were crying that they had "reservations" with the manager. We'll see how this ends up but right now, this is my go to place for a martini after work. read more

I found it extremely difficult to get into the Red Room. On my first visit, I was told the place was full, despite having got to the doorman before 10PM. On the second visit I was invited by a "celebrity" and finally made my way in. I was about to be turned away with the usual "it's full" reply from the doorman before I name dropped and gained entry only to find the place half empty. I guess that's the charm of the place. There is no real line outside and they do a good job of keeping the club just full enough to not seem overcrowded. However, the real gem about the Red Room is the decor. Having been designed by a famous interior designer, whose name escapes me, the Red Room provides great ambiance to enjoy a relaxing night out. The music is not blaring and the drinks are very reasonable. If you are lucky enough to get past the doorman, then go buy a lottery ticket and enjoy a great evening at the Red Room!!! read more

I showed up at about 1130p. There was no "line." I was by myself (actually meeting a group of friends who were already in the club) and had my boobs on blast, which may be why I got in no problem. Asked the Aussie doorman about Rugby, got the cold shoulder, whatever. The decor is the best thing about the club. It is rich and the colors (red LOL) are deep and lush. The music left a lot to be desired. If I hear one more techno "remix" I will claw my eyes out! Had a pounding headache at the end of the night. They even had a bathroom attendant! (Klassy!) I'd come here on a Tuesday or Wednesday but never on the weekends. If you like waiting in lines, having your name on a guest list, buying bottle service or things like that, this is your place. If you like to relax, have a drink and enjoy the company of your friends without the hassles of getting in, go somewhere else. It's a nice venue and it's in a great location. So, I was thinking of what to say about this place when I read Farrah A's review below. So...ummm...ditto. She summed it up exactly. The only thing I would add is that the dance floor feels like it's going to break at any moment, leaving you impaled on a broken floor board. Yet, I really did have a great time here...very lush and interesting decor on both levels. The people inside didn't seem quite as pretentious as some have noted in these reviews, but maybe it's toning down a bit now that a little time has passed...or maybe I just got lucky...or maybe I had Orange Martini goggles. Still, definitely on the pretentious side and the reason why I can't give it more stars. Back to the Orange Martinis -- they are definitely worth the trip. This place absolutely sucks sucks sucks! First of all, it was my birthday and we decided to pick a place that was central to everyone and we decided on the Red Room....what a horrible idea it was! Let me tell you why! My boyfriend had spoken with the GM, Brad Stearnes, for a month now who handles all of the tables/reservations and his name is on their website. The manager, Brad Stearnes, said that we were getting a table in the back for 25 people and with a 4 bottle minimum. This was perfect and we thought this was a done deal! We were sooooo wrong! The rest of this story just frustrates me as I am writing this and just pisses me off! Ok...so we get up to the lounge and pull in the parking lot where you have to valet because there is nowhere else to park and that was $10. Some of my friends had already arrived and were already inside...they were Caucasian. However, some of my Indian friends tried to get in bc they arrived earlier but the big, ugly Australian door guy or whatever he is, wouldn't let my Indian friends in!!!!!!! He told them that they are only accepting reservations on a Sat night. LIAR! Then when we walked up to the door, the door guy said that the "person" who we spoke to about our table reservation, the GM Brad Stearnes, no longer works for the company as of the night before and our reservation never existed and they knew nothing about it. WTF!!! What a bunch of bullsh*t and lies lies lies!!! My crowd included Asians, Indians, Caucasians, Blacks, and Hispanics. We said that there should still be a reservation even if that WAS the case, which it CLEARLY was B.S., and the door guy insisted that there is nothing he can do. He told us that they are only letting people in with reservations...this is when I looked inside and saw that there were only a handful of people inside, with half of them being a few of my friends. I had asked can we just go ahead and get a table now...he said that they are fully booked and can't do anything about it. The door guy said that we could go to Mercer and have it over there...and thank God we did because Mercer was so much more fun!!! So my night was not ruined because I still had a great time despite a change of venue...which turned out to be for the better! SO, DO NOT EVER GO TO Red Room, even if you can get in because NOBODY should be supporting a place like that...they lost lots of business that night and their name. They are racist, they discriminate, and simply just are sucky people!!! BTW, some of my Caucasian friends walked up to him and asked what the problem was...the door guy said that he would let them in, but not us...yup! Isn't that sad? They should have just put up a sign that says "Whites Only, No Colored People Allowed." And some of my friends were there that night and missed my birthday party. Sorry friends! Love you all!!! You first have to get past the jackass in the cheap suit playing God at the door. It's not hard to do just a pain. The place actually isn't bad. Very small and very crowded. The people were well dressed and seemed liked uptight jerks but I didn't experience any attitude problems. Both the people and staff were quite nice. The music absolutely SUCKED! The DJ was clueless to what the people wanted to hear. Probably because it was a prerecorded set in which all he had to do was press play and fake it. He even played Miley Cirus. Are you kidding me? I read the previous reviews of the Red Room prior to going there and was a little on guard. However, it could have been that the reviewers posted unflattering reviews on weekends (I went on a Wednesday night) and maybe that's why things didn't really work out. I notice this a lot on yelp actually; trashy reviews done over the weekend. Well, I met some friends there from a meetup group (Houston Single Friends) and had a great time. I spent $3 the whole night, yes I'm cheap and there was never any pressure to spend anything more. Wine was $2 plus tip. Very laid back atmosphere and the Fusion Taco truck was also outside, I didn't try their tacos, wasn't in the mood but maybe next time. This is a real lounge, with very comfortable sofas and typical NYC style lounge without the NYC attitude. I moved from NYC about a year ago and don't really miss much. But a comfortable, romantic type lounge is not easy to find in H town I've noticed. It's probably because Houston has never really developed a city type "vibe". For example NYC has clubbing until 4 am or bar hopping and South Beach in FL has clubs and bars on the beach. Houston has never really had that niche for which its known for. Except for pigging out! But anyway, can't say anything bad about this place, I recommend it more for singles and good place to meet people, maybe not so much for couples. I mostly saw (again a Wednesday night) lots of singles in groups (it could have been the Meetup group I was with, LOL!). But this seemed like a good place for singles. There is a dance floor upstairs but I didn't go there. Oh and lastly I don't know about the Ferraris etc but I didn't pay anything for street parking. When I have come to the Red Room I had a pretty good time. The door man definitely has his issues we'll say. The inside is very flamboyant for my taste. The only time I will go to a club like the Red Room, is when someone I know is already there. Reading other reviews that is not always the case. The music is ok. Not really into Techno, but they balance it with other music I can groove to. The key thing is like I said, make sure you know someone who's either on the list or already there. Avoid this place on Saturday night if you're colored. I remember this bouncer's face from various locations because I've always experienced difficulty getting in. He looks somewhat like Blake Lewis the music artist. A friend and I got there late, no waiting line, it was empty inside, birthday group was inside, and the bouncer simply stated "your group doesn't have a table". He didn't say "Yes" or "No" which left me a bit puzzled as I was left clueless of what to say next. I was actually surprised that my other friends got inside being that they're not white either. I ended up leaving so I missed the birthday party. If I knew in advance who the bouncer was for that night I would've never made the birthday girl a promise to show up at all. First off, the doorman is a pompous ass. My friend had a reservation booked in advance and the doorman tried to pull the "I can't find you on the list" BS. Then as more of the party showed up the doorman tried to say the party was over the limit(which was again BS). The manager wouldn't help and made my friend deal with the doorman himself. Then the doorman gave him BS about the ratio of guys to girls being too high. The place is small and the vibe is horrible. It tries to be this exclusive joint not realizing there are a ton more clubs 5 minutes away in Rice Village that are cheaper and much more alive. The music was ok but it was too small to dance anywhere. I'd recommend skipping this place. It just opened and if they keep up the attitude, they won't be open long. We were having a party for my Suzi. We called a month before, 1 week before, and 1 day before to confirm everything. When we showed up at 10:30, they told us that we had no reservation, that the Manager, Brad Stearns was fired yesterday, and they would not honor our reservation we made with him, leaving us wondering what to do. We had 40 people standing outside. A few of the people in our group got there before us and was let in, but when we showed up, they noticed Asian, Indian, and Hispanic people in our group, and they basically told us to leave. The big fat English guy who was at the door told my sister, her and her friends could come in, but everyone else would have to leave. I have never experienced a situation like this in my life. this place is so overly hyped. the music sucks (what's up with the dj spinning top 40's??!! - am i at The Drink Houston?). upstairs is packed and muggy. downstairs is loaded with couches, so i guess if you need a place to sit and hang out...then this is your spot? littered with greasy old money men and gold-digging blondes, i think i'll pass on this place. who cares if the couches are all velvet and everything is red. maybe the top 40's mix is to bridge the gap between the 50+ and the 30 year olds. i miss the brownstone when it was a restaurant. oh and the door guy/bouncer looks like jim carrey "the mask" version with the zoot suit. nice. read more

My review is simple. This place is awful do not go. Giving the run around at the door is ridiculous. Apparently the door guy "Joe" missed the geography lesson and doesn't realize that we are in Houston. What I find most amusing is that when I asked him directly he refused to be forthright and admit that he didn't want us to come in . Bottom line this establishment is suffering from an identity crisis and reeks of "new money". I went to Red Room for the first time last night. I thought the place was great. The doorman I thought was pretty cool and the staff was friendly. I think the concept of the bar is great. The DJ played good music and the crowed was a good mix. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating was due to the price of the drinks. Definitely a very nice club/lounge Beau did a hella job on the interior. Red Room is probably the toughest place to get into in Houston as well. Never had a problem but I've seen people that would normally get in turned away rather rudely. The downside, nice as it may be, definitely has the River Oaks neighborhood feel. Lot's 30's and 40's that you don't see anywhere else except maybe Mo's or the Houstonian. Has the old Houston money Cliqueish feel. Not a bad thing but just not a whole lot of fun. this place seems to be getting terrible reviews. the funny thing is, i don't disagree with anything they said. but i've also been a few times now and actually have had fun - not every time and maybe not traditional "fun" but interesting nights. as a recap. visit 1, turned away at the door due to sneakers. ok, i can somewhat deal with that, not the only place in town to say that. rookie mistake. visit 2, have the proper shoes on, and a collar with a sweater on over that. door guy gives a "show me your collar" then lets us in and says have a great night. the place is a nice lounge inside. we relax, music actually wasn't bad, gets crowded with all sorts of people. random crowd. river oaks people with young people too. i'd say 22-60 in terms of age range. good people watching - not quite washington ave tools but maybe a little more full of elegant pricks. 1 am rolls around and everyone gets kicked out. and i mean kicked out...8 cop cars outside, apparently some sort of raid. maybe not everyone's definition of a good time, but definitely different than a standard voyage down washington. well, there are cop cars all around washington, but busting the clientele of bars, not the bar themself. big thing now is every table and seat in the place is reserved. i mean everywhere. one time, we got asked to move every half an hour. not the usual, why are you sitting there! get up now! but just asked to move somewhere else. the funny thing is, about 50% of the time, those people never showed up. we kept waiting on Doc Brown to show up at our table - mainly because i wanted to see if he showed up in a Delorean and had helped marty make it back from 1955 ok. alas, he never showed up. getting drinks isnt a problem from the waitresses, they make good manhattans and a nice wine selection...so sort of weird...lots of reasons to hate the place due to pretentiousness and overall weird events...but its always a change from the norm. the key - we've always gotten there about 9:30 - 10. read more
