I think one of the positives has been a renewed emphasis on discovering and really supporting local. One of my discoveries during this time has been Monastery Baked Goods, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, Indiana offering baked goods that are sold in support of the ministries and mission of the Sisters of St. Benedict. If you've never been to the Ferdinand, Indiana area I regard it as a rather holy place. There's simply a sacred feeling being there and I've come across in my life a couple of the Sisters of St. Benedict including one teacher who was key in finding out how I learn best. She almost single-handedly guided me as I went from a C+ student in high school to a college valedictorian. So, when I discovered this way I could have tasty treats and support the Sisters of St. Benedict I was all about it! Monastery Baked Goods began as an outreach by the Sisters during Christkindlmarkt, an annual German festival held in Ferdinand. They started making and selling springerles, a German cookie. From there, they experimented and began making the almond-based almerles. They then began offering a cookie in honor of the 12th century mystic St. Hildegard. Simply Divine Bakery was formed, but in 2015 the name changed to Monastery Baked Goods as a way to truly identify a relationship with their monastery. They have an online gift shop that includes bourbon-soaked fruitcake, springerles, Hildegard cookies, St. Hildegard Crunch Mix, Hildegard mini-cookies, Simply Lemon cookies (these are wonderful), gingersnap cookies (these are wonderful), chocolate shortbread cookies, shortbread cookies, buttermint with chocolate cookies, prayerful pretzels (these are awesome), and a bunch of other options. They also offer gluten-free options and recently introduced mint julep cookies. They offer bundles and specialty options. They offer their products wholesale and in Indy you can get them at A Taste of Indiana at 65th and Binford. Prices vary, though I've found them incredibly reasonable and, of course, they also support a good cause. While many religious communities continue to suffer in terms of numbers, it seems like the Sisters of St. Benedict continue to do well. The Monastery Baked Goods website is a page on the Sisters website and it's inspiring to see new Sisters commit to monastic life and to see all the ministries of the Sisters of St. Benedict. I'm inspired by this ministry and I love the products. While I don't get to Ferdinand often, it's nice knowing that I can still support the ministry as I live only about 10 minutes from A Taste of Indiana and can pick up my Monastery Baked Goods there.

This trip we came for the speciality items the esquites, chamoy pickle, torta, and boba milkshakes. The torta was $9 and could feed a nation! Not to mention hot off the grill and delicious! I couldn't even get a pic of my corn because it was so yummy it was devoured quickly. The ladies working were so sweet and patient with my questions. For $25 we had a fun date night trying something different.

Do your best to avoid Chamoy Ricos in Shelbyville. The photos speak for themselves but I'll elaborate. The first photo was my order... the second was what I actually got. I did professionally reach out prior to this review and was told basically she found no error. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with the cake I picked up on 11/01/25, as it fell far below my expectations. When I placed the order, I confirmed the pickup time would be 11:00 a.m., which was agreed to. An hour before pickup, owner reached out asking to change the time to 11:30 a.m. -- which I completely understood. I even assured her that I could come at 12:00 p.m. instead to give extra time. I am a mom of 3 (15, 5, 1), I completely get it! I arrived at 12:05 after a 45-minute drive, but the cake still wasn't ready. When I arrived, she mentioned that it wasn't finished because of a "rush" at opening -- but there was no one there at the time, and I wasn't sure why the cake hadn't been prepped prior to opening, especially since it was a scheduled order. She kindly offered my two girls (ages 1 and 5) cake pops while we waited, but by the time the cake was finished -- nearly 12:55 p.m. -- they were restless and not feeling well, so we quickly left once it was handed over and didnt take a super good look as I was trying to prevent her helper from destroying the cake trying to box it. What made the delay even more frustrating was that she downplayed the situation by mentioning that my daughter's party wasn't until the next day, which made it feel like my time -- and the importance of her event -- weren't valued. Regardless of when the party was, the agreed-upon pickup time was important and should have been honored, especially considering the long drive and the effort it took to accommodate the schedule changes due her lack of accountability. When I got home about 45 minutes later, I placed the cake in the refrigerator and only took it out the next morning for the party. That's when I noticed it was extremely lopsided, the image was not what I had ordered, and the color was completely different from the example I provided. Mind you SHE sent me the orignal design as one she had done before. I've attached photos showing both the cake I received and the cake design that was requested, so you can clearly see the difference. Initially my quote was $100. I told her i did not need a large cake with fruit or fillings and she changed the price to $50 for a smaller nonfilled cake. Despite being clear that I wanted plain cake with no fillings, the cake was filled with hard sprinkles. Some were large and unchewable, which became a choking hazard for my children and guests at the party. The birthday girl already struggles with certain textures. Even worse than that, there were several red smoothie type straws stuck inside the cake at random spots -- not only unexpected, but they made the cake impossible to cut properly. When I tried to remove them, the cake collapsed and fell apart, making it unservable. The icing was uneven -- almost an inch thick on one side and thin on the other -- and the image decorations were lifting off. They were supposed to be edible but didn't dissolve. The color was supposed to be pale pink but was instead coral. Overall, it looked rushed and unfinished. My daughter didn't even get to enjoy her own birthday cake, which was heartbreaking after how much excitement she had for it. For a $50 order, this was a huge disappointment. I'm normally a big supporter of small businesses, but this experience reflected poor communication, lack of accountability, and a product that simply wasn't what was promised. It felt like the order was rushed together last minute instead of completed with care. I attempted to resolve with owner respectfully but instead she blocked me mid conversation, so here we go. Is it me? Am I the problem? Please share. #chamoyricos #labubu #cake #5yearoldbirthday

There isn't a big menu visible and the girl behind the counter wasn't helpful at all. We realized there was a small paper menu available. I got a hot fudge sundae. The fudge was not hot and there was caramel on it (not requested by me). It costs $9 and was pretty small. You can definitely tell the ice cream is home made, but not in a good way unfortunately. This place is super cute so I hope they get better employees and step up their ice cream game.

The cake is very dense and then the icing is also a little sweet and thick. I would recommend a lighter like whip cream-esque icing to let the moist dense cake shine a little easier. In addition to the cupcake I order the Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream. This was amazing tastes great, just one small note, there are some pieces of the cereal like big pieces so just be sure to chew. Overall I enjoyed the selection of pastries and will be back. The staff were great this night too. The staff who helped kept great conversation with my friends and I and told us everything about the menu items.
