Barry is a kind, patient and wonderful person who took time out of his busy schedule to walk me through a possible repair for my 1973 P30 Van, which has been converted into a tiny home and is very very heavy. I had not brought my van to him, but was merely inquiring about the cost of his services. I am currently swapping the engine in my van from a worn out inline 6 to a brand new 350 and was considering swapping my rear end gears from a 4.56:1 to a 4.10:1 ratio to get some more top speed at the loss of a little torque. After a brief phone call I sent Barry an email with some calculations on how much torque would be lost vs how much top speed would be gained, enquiring how much it would cost to swap to a different carrier, new bearings, different ratio etc. I also sent him the measurements of my van to see if it would fit in his workshop. Barry called me back shortly after sending my email and at the cost of him making additional money advised me against changing the gearing due to the weight, and said investing in a different transmission is a much better option to save up for in the future. He also took the time to measure his workshop and said, though they cannot get the van high up off the ground in his workshop, they would accommodate me by doing the work just barely lifted up off the ground. The fact that Barry took time out of his day, at no cost to me, to slowly and carefully walk me through my options to give me the best result speaks loudly of his character. He even gave me a detailed first hand experience method on how I can get a loose indication of the condition of my rear end on my own, again costing me nothing. I had purchased a differential from a company in the Midwest for my classic Corvette C2 when I had it installed and I drove it for about 200 miles the differential gears went out. I took the differential to Barry he opened it up in front of me, showed me what's going on give me an estimate which was very reasonable. I called the company that originally sold me the differential, explain the situation but they were insistent about me sending it back to them at no cost to me. Over the course of the past 10 years, I've must have driven by this shop well over 1000 times. Having owned many trucks and Jeeps, gearing is always such an important aspect of the final drive of your vehicle and not many people pay attention to this. Towing trailers is quite possibly the most stress you can place on a vehicles components especially the rear axle, having the right gears makes ALL the difference. Barry and his crew are by far the BEST at what they do. My current truck is a 2014 Ram 1500 and I originally had 3.55 gear ratio and it was pulling my trailers and going up hill just fine, but I didn't want to stress the rear end any more than I needed too as I was towing between 5-7000lbs so going to a 4.10 ratio was the right ticket. Best shop for your rear end needs i held off on getting my differential getting fixed until I could find a good shop for a good price and I found it here. I called to make an appointment to get my truck fixed and what exactly I wanted done too it. Scheduled a date for drop off Barry worked with me allowing me drop it off after hours. Dropped my truck off after hours and keys in drop box with my info on it. Got a call the next morning notifying me that they received it and would start as soon as possible... I was expecting them too finish it in a week. I was dead wrong!!! They finished it in basically a day!!! Honest work for a good price better than other shops that have decent reviews. I waited on purpose for at least 1 year to write this review. Last year, during Covid, my Nissan Titan rear differential was rattling bad, and I mean so bad the noise and vibrations were scary. I had ordered online a new Detroit Truetrac rear differential which I had read all positive reviews on Nissan Titan forums that this was the way to go over the OEM original rear dif. Only problem was I had to find a reputable repair shop that knew how to install and calibrate this type of rear differential. After contacting 3 places, all of which had 4 or better review ratings, I finally decided to take my truck to The Rear End Shop in Livermore, which was 4 times as far as if I had taken it a differential shop near my home. But after talking to owner/manager? Barry on the phone twice and reserving his earliest appointment, a week later I dropped off my Nissan Titan truck with the Detroit Truetrac and other parts that needed to be replaced such as the pinion seals. Barry had it back to me in less than 48 hours and kept the old differential in a box to show me how bad it was. My truck was running like-new (the rear end differential much better) on the way home and had a lot of power going up the Sunol grade to Milpitas. Needless to say, the last 12 months my truck has been running strong with no problems at all. The back end doesn't peel out anymore and the rear differential is as smooth as butter and whisper quiet as well. These guys are the best in the business. The reviews are spot on and if you find it hard to get an appointment you sure know why. There is no better Rear End Differential shop than this one in the whole entire Bay Area. Last week especially, we needed our truck back in a couple days so my son could have it at college in SoCal and Barry got it done quickly it drove great all the way down to Riverside. I took my truck to The Rear End Shop for a new ring and pinion because they were cheaper than everyone else and have good reviews on Yelp. It's rare to find a Mechanic that really goes above and beyond but Barry is one of the few. Here is the story: Barry replaced my gears about a year and a half ago with OEM parts for a fraction of the price the dealer wanted. I after I got the truck back I noticed some gear noise so I brought the truck back and Barry made some adjustments at no charge. The second time I got the truck back the noise was better but still present so I brought the truck back again. Barry took the new gears out and returned them to the dealer (turns out that the new gears were bad) and put a whole new set in at no charge. A few weeks later I noticed that my locker was engaging sometimes when turning so I brought my truck back and asked Barry to add an extra bottle of friction modifier. Barry did this and checked the gears again at no charge. Fast forward a year and a half (and 40,000 miles) to this week. I had a howling noise coming from the rear end of my truck. I brought it in to Barry to have it checked out. Turns out that the outer pinion bearing was going bad. Barry replaced the bearing, changed the gear oil, and remembered to add an extra bottle of friction modifier. I went in yesterday to pick the truck up and when I asked Barry how much I owed him for the work (expecting the bill to be $500 or so) he said that I didn't owe him anything. Barry is a mechanic that not only has integrity but will go above and beyond to make sure his work is perfect and that you are satisfied. This is a super busy shop for a reason. Barry and his crew do solid work. This is the only shop I could find locally that had knowledge of and has installed a 4x4 front axle free spin kit. Barry is a very knowledgeable guy that has many years of experience and knows what he is doing. He gave me some great advise to ensure I was happy with the final outcome based on issues that arose in previous installations. After having some Covid related parts availability problems we finally pinned down a kit and we scheduled an installation appointment.
