I drive by here every day and it's always fairly crowded so I thought I'd get some takeout. Staff was really nice. Bar inside looked pretty slick, it was a nice looking bar with cool lighting and neatly featured liquors. I got the fried chicken sandwich cooked in hot sauce which came with a generous portion of tasty sweet potato fries. The piece of chicken was huge and juicy. It had bacon aioli on it, which I never tasted, and slaw, which should have been more plentiful compared to the size of the chicken. Heat on the sandwich was nice though! I didn't understand the charcuterie/mezze plate, two pieces of baguette/toast, with pickled green beans, walnuts, goat cheese, apple, apricot, and mashed squash. Went to The Railpenny Tavern with my daughters recently. We had been here previously and decided to return. The restaurant has plenty of parking in a private lot. There are various types of seating-inside and outside,as well. Due to the extremely hot weather, we chose to sit at a low table inside. We received very good service from Kelsey, who was friendly & attentive. We each had beverages- there is a full bar & a decent draft beer list. We shared Spinach & Artichoke Dip. It came with carrots & a too small portion of pita. We asked for more pita and were charged $2 and that still wasn't enough. Anyway, the dip was good. Absolutely horrible! I'm on Carnivore (not their problem), there is absolutely nothing on the menu that I could eat. I did try to get chicken wings, they are smoked and not my preference. They don't have unsmoked. The waitress did offer to ask if they could do a plain chicken breast. I have never had anything so dry in my life. I had one bite and sent it back. The other two people got chicken parm. They came out burnt, and the spaghetti looked like canned pasta. All clumped up. They couldn't eat it, they tried, but gave up. What a hidden gem this place is! Epping, NH isn't exactly NYC or Boston fine dining but who cares. I'd compare the Railpenny to some popular restaurants in Portsmouth or Manchester that I've been to. They have a casual & comfortable dining area but I usually sit at the bar. The menu is well balanced for appetizers, soup/salads, burgers and entrees...the French Onion Burger is very tasty. Their cocktail drinks are awesome...I definitely enjoyed my Manhattan. They also have a good draft beer and wine selection. The bartenders are professional and friendly. Got there toward the end of happy hour and got some beers. The deals were great. For food I ordered the American burger with hand cut fries and added bacon. My friend got the uncles Mac. The burger was cold (I heard someone behind me complain about their burger also being cold) a huge glob of Mayo at the bottom, and the bacon wasn't in full strips. It was in pieces and added to the burger which made me think it was just sitting in the kitchen. The Mac and cheese was over cooked and the chicken was in tiny pieces as if it were canned chicken in a sauce mixture. Honestly the best part of the meal were the fries...seriously the fries were the best thing there. We considered ordering more but glad we didn't. Made a reservation last night party of four. Right away before we even were introduced to the waitress it was loud and it stayed loud all night long Our server was Isabella and she was a delight! The food was very good but I think a little expensive. I had the mussels and asked them to put it over pasta Up charged me $12 just for the pasta on top of the $18 for the mussels. It was delicious, but I think a little expensive. My wife and her friend had a a glass of wine at $14 a glass and it was not a very good pour. Did I say it was very loud I remember last time we went it was also loud they need to invest in some acoustic tiles for that ceiling. This could be a five star. read more

The food is excellent, the drink selection is outstanding and the beer garden is one of the best we have been in. Totally dog friendly. Truly disappointed. Our second visit. The first time was a few years ago and I was underwhelmed. I was hoping things improved. I don't think that ownership ever visits. It just lacks attention to detail. We came for lunch on a Saturday to celebrate a large purchase. The menu is very limited. It was just brunch menu. I just wanted more lunch options. Our table water bottle had a spider sitting on the top of it. I ordered a burger medium and it came raw in the center. On the good side, the tater tots were excellent and my wife's chicken sandwich was very good. It typically comes on a waffle but they were able to switch it up and change it to a bun. $73 for 2 sandwiches and 2 drinks (one of which was a local craft beer). Drink ordered from the bar only included the alcohol and ice as they were out of the other ingredients for the drink but, did not inform us of such. Steak was ordered for the entree, it was underseasoned, tough and not cooked to order. Sides served with the steak were also underseasoned. Overall, a very poor experience. I visited the Railpenny Tavern with girlfriends last past week, we were a group of 5 at dinnertime. It had been a decade since I first visited the Tavern, so I was excited to revisit what memory served up as a delicious experience. Sadly, however, I was very disappointed with the meal and service this time around. While the ambiance and decor deserve a great rating, the food and service do not. I ordered a French Onion burger, medium temp, but what was delivered was a fully raw hamburger patty that barely saw any grill time. It was painfully raw. When I brought it up to the waitress, she said "Would you like me to take it away"? and never offered anything more - not a new one, not to take it off my bill - nothing. Then, for dessert, we ordered a chocolate caramel mousse along with other items and after tasting what was clearly un-set pudding, the waitress blame the excessive heat happening outside on their soupy pudding. Nah, it just wasn't set in the fridge for long enough before being served. Again, the waitress did not offer to bring us a new one (or an entirely new dessert) or take it off the bill. It was clear the waitress had zero investment in our experience and seemed she wanted to get her shift over with as soon as possible. Overall, I don't plan to revisit or recommend this restaurant, despite its charm and ambiance. read more

My Mom loves the Railpenny. I don't know why. Whenever we go, the service is poor, we are often forgotten and the food takes forever. I imagine there might be times when it all comes together, but I don't know when that might be. I've had some good food - the cauliflower, brussel sprouts, schnitzel. But the burgers have always been burned, the servers running around without direction, cramped seats. I hope it gets better. read more

I will start this off by saying our server was Becca. She was absolutely delightful and did everything she could. That being said... We sat outside on the deck. Becca greeted us and took our drink order quickly. She took our food order when she returned with our drinks which was within 5-10 mins of sitting down. We then waited over one full hour for our food. Our waitress checked in with us multiple times although she couldn't give us an idea of when the food would be out, unfortunately. It started getting dark and quite chilly. The table next to us asked to have the outside deck heaters turned on but were told they were out of propane. We had ordered the Cowboy burger, which was fine, and the Mushroom Ravioli which was 100% disappointing. It was at best luke warm, bland and unseasoned, sitting in milk. In the end, our food was taken off the bill without us having to ask which was nice. The whole experience was a total bummer though. I left hungry, and went to McDonald's on the way home. read more

Well we made a reservation- but when we got here they said they were waiting on some tables to get up. I get that. We waited. Our reservation was at 7 and it was 7:30 when they sat us. The child at the host stand was so nice- but mostly absent (I would have run away to hide too... lots of angry people in the foyer waiting.) we ordered immediately (plenty of time to look at the menu) and we have been sitting and waiting and it is now 8:03. Should we leave? Probably. We are deciding. We didn't order anything hard- a burger, fries, and the pork chop. The people one either side of us came in after us and have already been served. The waitress just came over and said 'your meals are two tickets away.' What does that mean? They are firing it in two tickets? Or serving it? Unclear. I'm hungry writing this, and maybe the food is great, but if you want to eat soonish after you arrive, maybe don't go here. I should have just defrosted a pizza and eaten at home. Cheaper and a good wait time. -follow up- 2 out of three food items have arrived. It looks good. -follow up. The buyer was really bad. Cold, stale tasting bun, the bacon was so thick and gristly it made it hard to eat. But I did eat every bit of it because I don't waste food and I'm hungry AF. The fries were okay. Cold. We have been wanting to try this place and chose it for dinner to celebrate our 24th anniversary. We were underwhelmed by the appetizer's on the menu, so skipped something that we normally indulge in for a special meal. For dinner, I had the steak tips with peppers and little potatoes. I I ordered medium rare and the little chunks were definitely medium well and some charcoaled. For $29, it was not a great experience, taste or even sure it was actually a steak tip. TBH, the potatoes were better than the meat. My wife got the Mamma's mac and cheese as her first choice of fish and chips was sold out. It was not momma's cheesy mac and cheese, not super cheesy, mostly just a big bowl of barely cheese curly noodles... a lot of profit margin on this dish. We all were surprised that we got a very small piece about 3" on the outer rim with a bit of parsley (advertised as salad greens) that was it for 12.00! Come for the decent food, leave because you are being eaten alive by mosquitoes... Excited to score a last minute 7:30pm table in the beer garden on a warm Friday night, we arrived on time and were seated promptly. I ordered a local beer which was excellent, my wife ordered a hibiscus gin cocktail (I don't recall the name) which was poured with zero love. With an extensive custom cocktail menu and plenty of photos online of well appointed glasses this was a let down. We did not expect to receive a glass that was barely half-full, had no garnish and half melted ice chips. Let's just skip past the fact that it was not a good cocktail, not everything is for everyone. However, determined to have a good meal we soldiered on. The appetizers we ordered came out quickly and were excellent. The miso lime deviled eggs were deliciously creamy and a unique bite. We also ordered the lobster croquettes which were pricey but delicious. This is where the wheels came off. In an instant we were under attack by the local mosquito population. I can forgive them for not wanting to blanket the surrounding area in pesticides but you also can't, in good conscious, seat people outside after dusk knowing what a disaster it will be. Getting eaten alive is no fun so we asked for the entrees we ordered (30 minutes prior) to-go so we could just eat them in our car. Perhaps unsurprisingly it took another 15-20 minutes for our food to finally come out which was great fun for the mosquitoes. Sitting in our car still ready to enjoy our meal in spite of so many setbacks we realized that they gave us no cutlery, so I walked back in only to be told that they don't have any. In the end we drove across the street to the gas station / dunkin / subway, got some plastic forks and ate the remains of our $100 meal by the soft glow of the gas station floodlights. My chicken with risotto was good, well seasoned with beautifully crispy skin, the risotto was gluey but still had decent flavor. My wife's seared tuna was also good, as were the pickled radishes but the bed of rice was bland. But given the setting it was hard to get excited about any of it. If we had realized there was a gas station across the street I would have walked over and bought a can of "Deep Woods Off" and donated it to our waiter. A can of bug spray in his back pocket would have earned him a lot in extra tips. To the owner: you have to figure the mosquito situation out or stop serving people in the beer garden after dusk. The waiter was very apologetic and kept repeating "sorry it gets really buggy at night here" so it's clearly a well understood but completely ignored problem.
