The Side Bar is a true diamond in the rough of what is Lawton, Oklahoma. The owner(s) is definitely not a local and why he would live here is beyond me. BUT the ambiance, decor, and cosmopolitan look is very well done and stands up with any great bar in Deep Ellum or Lower Greenville. It's only when the clientele open their mouths do you realize, "yup, I'm still in Lawton, Oklahoma." The bartenders are not just cute but actually were attentive (more so than many places in Dallas) and, considering it is Lawton, Oklahoma, know what a Manhattan is as well as an Old Fashioned. Unfortunately they served without rye but I don't hold it against them (looking at you management/owner) because I was immediately told about it. I'm looking forward to asking for a sazerac or a cosmopolitan on my next visit so hopefully they have the goods. The only issue I had with the staff (IF he is on the payroll) was some idiot who treated the music as his own personal playlist; diverse clientele be damned. Even the bartenders were annoyed at him but he straightened up once the owner was on site. Also, there is a lot of smoke/vaping but I give that a pass since, well, it is Lawton, Oklahoma. My most recent memory of Blondie's was seeing some guy get a beer bottle bashed over his head. Never saw that before in real life. I thought that kind of thing only happened in movies. You see, this middle aged fellow was there with his new girlfriend. But his ex-girlfriend was also there -and likely already had quite a lot to drink. Seems natural. Rejection can lead to lots of drinking. Rejection can lead to fighting as well. Anyway, these two ladies get into it. Their fists start flying. The boyfriend just had to jump in between and separate the two. In one fluid, sweeping motion, ex-girlfriend swiped a longneck beer bottle off a table and smashed it on the back of the guy's head! The movies never show just how much a head bleeds when a glass bottle is smashed on it. I mean this poor guy bled all over the back of his shirt. I'm sure he needed several stitches at the hospital. Reasons for the two star review? The bar is tiny. It's in a crappy area of town. If you're not worried about getting your ass kicked inside you're going to be worried about your car getting jacked outside. And besides, I just bought a huge mug of beer when that guy got the bottle smashed on his head. The cops got there and we had to leave. I think I had only two or three sips out of that mug. Arrgh!
