They are a full service quilting store. A very nice quality fabric selection. Classes, long arm quilting. Batting, thread, extra's for your Janome machine, special kits, everything you need to make a quilt. The staff is very knowledgeable. Can you tell I love going there. Called to find out about the sewing classes for the month of April, Kathy, the owner was extremely rude and unprofessional. She was talking to me as if I'm her maid. The Quilters Studio - Fabric Stores Near Me - Fairfax, Virginia

I went into the store today explaining I want to make a quilt for my wall. I spent over an hour trying to make a decision with about 15 bolts of fabrics on the table. Not one lady offered to help me. Unfortunately I walked out of the store and decided to go to G Street Fabrics. I'm disappointed!!!! read more

Rude. No hello. No thank you after paying. No can I help you. Yet. They said all this to the other customers who were clearly caucasians. Maybe they should know that quilting precedes the American colony and being polite to ALL CUSTOMERS regardless of skin and faith, would be good for their business. This is fabric and threads. Not geopolitics. Also, I guess they are perfectly OK with being terrible to customers as nobody wears name tags. Yet it would be soooo easy to embroid them with all the machine they have. Very dishonest folks. I will go to Walmart and Joannes but not this place. read more

Buyer beware. Know their NO RETURN policy before exchanging any money with this business. I tried to return sewing machine needles after 4 days - never used, packaging perfect. My receipt did not say NO RETURN on it, and by not receiving my return, they are in breach of contract. The attendant was not kind and was snooty. The outside of the storefront does not post a NO REFUND policy but posts a small piece of paper on the cash register, "No returns on fabric or notions." This is why box stores are going out of business. Poor business practices and poor customer service. I will never return to this store again. read more

I have worked in customer service, and marketing research. I have visited The Quilters Studio in person during their participation in SHOP HOP events and had the same experience both times. I shopped, browsed and waited for 10 minutes or more. Not ONE employee greeted or even acknowledged my presence in that time, however, I observed employees greeting OTHER customers upon their arrival. What disturbs me even more, is that I purchased a high end sewing machine from them during a convention off site. The owner and employees at the convention were EAGER to assist me making that purchase. Never again. read more

I took the beginner's quilting class with Eva at Quilter's Studio and learned so much! Eva helped me understand the entire quilting process, from choosing fabrics to binding the quilt. Every sewing machine was welcome in the class. Eva encouraged me to want to learn more about quilting. Through this class I was able to connect with other quilters and sign up for events. Eva is such an amazing teacher. I definitely recommend anyone who wants to get into quilting to take Beginner's class at Quilter's studio. read more

HI, Alissa's husband Jason here. Just wanted to thank The Quilters Studio for their abhorrent customer service and their loose use of the word "notion" (look it up it's hilarious) on their no refund policy. Phew, you helped me dodge a bullet there. She really wanted to get in to quilting and would have spent a lot of money there. But thanks to this experience I can safely say that she no longer wants to continue with this hobby. read more

The store itself is very pretty and offers a wide variety of fabrics, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed in the sewing class I attended. I signed up for the beginning sewers class as a complete novice with a recently purchased, less expensive machine. From the start, it was clear that those of us with more affordable machines were looked down upon, while the instruction catered to students with $1,000-$3,000 machines. The instructor was very comfortable using those machines, but had little patience or ability to troubleshoot the less expensive ones. The pacing of the class was off and often awkward. There was no structure. I found that I taught myself more in between sessions than I actually learned during the three classes. Students who needed extra support were treated as nuisances rather than learners who just needed guidance. On top of that, the instructor had a difficult time clearly explaining the steps required to the class. Not everyone who is a subject matter expert is necessarily a good or qualified teacher--and unfortunately, that showed here. For the final project--adding a button to a bag--about half of the class left with unfinished projects because the instructor "didn't know our machines" and wasn't able to help troubleshoot. I went home frustrated and ultimately turned to YouTube to learn what the class had failed, but promised, to teach me. While I haven't purchased fabric from this store, I did overhear staff interacting with customers. Some employees came across as catty, condescending, and know-it-all, which is very off-putting for a novice sewer. To be fair, not all staff were like this, but I can understand where the negative reviews come from. Overall, while the store's fabric selection is lovely, the class experience was disappointing, discouraging, and not extremely helpful. read more

I love this shop! They have the best selection of good quality fabric I've ever seen. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. A wonderful selection of fabric and other sewing notions. Friendly staff. Bright open store with huge classroom in the back!

I was a regular customer at Quilter's Studio in Fairfax, VA. on Main St. I had spend thousands in her shop. I was unaware that the expiration policy had changed on the gift cards. My Husband bought me a $500 gift card Xmas of '23. In '22 he got me a $1000 card. I had used that over 2 years. I had been using my stash for the year and only needed to use $102 of gift card for a backing I needed. When I shopped there last week she refused to honor my $398 left on my card. Instead, she took, $60 off my purchase. We obviously had no idea of the expiration date. I am very disappointed in her horrible customer service. I will never shop there again. I will now shop at Suzzies in Manassas and on line. They have no expiration on their gift cards there....as did Leslie at The Quilt Patch. Leslie did not have expiration dates either. Quality saleswomen.....but not at Quilter's Studio. Life is too short to treat customers like that. Shameful. read more

Wonderful people - knowledgeable and very helpful. Great selections of fabrics, notions, sewing machines and classes.

The owner of this store, Kathye, is incredibly rude. I had a horrible experience with her last year. To make a long story short, she misrepresented one of her floor model sewing machines as being only a year old. After I bought it, I found out it was actually three years old. She refused to apologize, take responsibility for giving me incorrect information, or honor a legitimate return. Instead in her email response to me she insulted me and side-stepped my concerns. I purchased the machine during the Sewing & Quilting Expo in Fredericksburg in September 2020. Kathye was there with two reps from Janome. She interrupted me, was rude, and attempted to manipulate me into thinking she was doing me a favor. The worst and most telling incident occurred after I remembered that another store employee told me that the first annual service for any machine purchased was free of charge. I asked Kathye about this, and in a curt and impatient tone, she immediately responded, "No, definitely not. That's not included in the price." However, later on, Kathye stepped away to speak with someone else, and one of the Janome reps pulled me aside. He said in a low voice, clearly not wanting Kathye to hear him, "I don't know why she said that earlier about the first annual service. It should be included in the price." He then handed me his card and told me to call him if I had any trouble getting the service for free. The fact that he wouldn't speak up in front of her clearly indicates that others perceive her to be a bully as well. Also, at the Expo she quoted me one price for a brand new machine, but then when I emailed her to return the floor model and instead purchase a new machine, she insisted the price was higher. Finally, in her email she claimed at the Expo she offered to look up the age of the machine for me, but in reality, she did no such thing. She simply said it was about a year old. Thankfully, I received a refund after going back to the store multiple times, and then finally just leaving the floor model machine at the store and refusing to take it with me. Kathye never apologized to me at any point. After this incident, I was talking with an experienced local quilter about shopping for a machine. When she found out I live in Fairfax City, not knowing that I had already had a bad experience at The Quilter's Studio, she strongly cautioned me against shopping there. She told me the owner has a bad reputation for being unhelpful, rude, and discourteous. I highly recommend you shop elsewhere, especially for a sewing machine. It's not worth your time and hard-earned money. read more

This store gets zero stars based off my last interaction, but I had years of good times there beforehand, so I'll give them two. First of all, the owner is rude and sometimes downright scary. I've witnessed her speaking in a demeaning way to employees in the inner office (not soundproof). I've also seen people try to return items and get rebuked in a non-professional manner. I was sold some pre-wound bobbins by an associate, who as it turns out, had no clue what I was needing. I was told one thing, and they ended up being something else. I took them back with receipt and was turned away. So, more power to you if you love the store and have never been jilted by them. Their return policy (or lack thereof) is asinine. I won't return on principle, despite liking the fabrics and waiting patiently for classes to start back up. read more

I visited here as part of a trip to VA, and boy I am glad I did. The layout and color composition of the shop (from the fabrics) was fabulous, and I had a real treat walking carefully aisle by aisle to look at beautiful fabrics. The staff was wonderful, engaging and helpful and I was pleased to leave spending less than $100 :). But I walked away with a gorgeous quilt pattern that will hopefully pay years of dividends! If you like to quilt and or see, make a stop. Most of the fabrics were between $11/$12 yard. read more

Love this shop. I've learned my new passion through classes at this studio. The fabrics are of the best quality; they service the machines they sell - primarily Janome and Elna - and there really is no limit to how much you can learn through their many begininng and advanced classes. Great turn around on receiving my fabrics but when I felt one of my fabrics feel differently than the others I questioned its quality. This past week I have bought over $2k fabrics of Tula Pink. $250 was spent at quilters studio. I had a problem with one of my fabrics. I wanted to email them but the email was not working. So I gave a call and Kasey picked up and at first was nice. When I was telling her that it felt washed to me and would like to return it she cut me off as I was talking and told me that they only sell quality fabrics and will not issue a refund on cut fabrics. I understand that but this was End of the bolt fabric so no cutting done. I asked if there was anything else we could do about this and she said she could contact the manufacturer but she was not going to refund my money for this questionable washed fabric. She welcomed me to complain on Facebook and yelp, so here I am letting others know the treatment I got. Usually I would not waste my time but I felt disrespected. I just spent $250 at this store only to be told that I am wrong. What they advertise is great customer service but in return I got rude customer service when things went wrong. read more

I visited this big, bright store when I was working in Fairfax (I live in Texas). One evening after work, I went with a co-worker to browse the store, and because she was tired, I kept my shopping brief and quick: I purchased a small quilting ruler for trimming the points accurately from triangles. That night, my husband texted me a photo of my triangle ruler at home, and it turned out that the new ruler didn't match the angles. So I brought it back to exchange it the next day, excited to spend more time with the fun, modern fabrics, and maybe walk away with more fabric I don't need but really want. They had a great selection! When I returned he next day and explained why I was returning / possibly exchanging the new ruler, the lady behind the counter said they couldn't issue a refund on notions, so I asked her where on the receipt it showed that policy. She couldn't find it because it's not there, but said the owner had told her this was the return policy on notions, so I asked to speak with the owner. When the owner appeared, she repeated the same policy, so I asked her to show me where on the receipt the policy was printed. I also pointed out that no one told me when I bought the ruler that it was a final sale purchase, nor was the policy written anywhere at the sales counter. She read the entire refund policy from the sales receipt out loud to me, realized that there truly is no such policy about "no refunds on notions" in writing -- anywhere -- and she got hostile. She said in a loud voice, "I can see that you are not a regular customer. We don't offer refunds on notions because if you'd bought this, taken it home, and damaged it, we would be responsible for that damage by accepting a return. But I'm going to go ahead and refund this to you." She spun around to find a sales associate to refund my purchase. I let her have the last word, because she had already displayed complete lack of professionalism. The last thing that would help the situation would be for me to give her feedback on my customer experience when she was clearly so emotionally heated. Perhaps it is helpful to point out that this "last word" from the shop owner -- just the words she said -- assumes the worst about customers in general. Maybe that's from her experience with previous badly behaved customers, I don't know. What I do know is that I'd purchased the ruler less than 24 hours before, and had not even taken it out of the plastic bag. I wouldn't have had any of my own equipment physically in that city to damage the new ruler! But she was clearly not interested in getting to know me or the situation. Also, by distinguishing me as "not a regular customer," she alienated me and ensured I'd never become a regular customer. She could have looked at the ruler to make sure it wasn't damaged, processed a simple exchange, and I probably would have left having spent way more money because I had more time on my second visit to browse the fabric and patterns. As a business owner, I know it's critical to take responsibility for communicating policies before enforcing them. The printed refund policy and the shop's make-believe refund policy are not the same, and that should never be the customer's fault. It doesn't help to use a negative tone to scold a customer when you haven't communicated a policy that you want to enforce. Your customers are not mind readers. Customers are also not children who need to be scolded. The associate who worked on my refund understood that, because she was incredibly sweet and helpful. When she ran into a hitch in the refund process, she apologized and thanked me for my patience, and found another associate to assist -- who I assume also heard the scolding I got from the owner, and was similarly kind and helpful. I stopped writing Yelp reviews several years ago, but this was such an unsavory experience that I can't bear the idea someone would go through something similar without advance warning. So beware. read more

The Quilters Studio - Fabric Stores Near Me - Fairfax, Virginia

I've been going to the store since it opened a few years back. It's in a great location and for the most part I have enjoyed shopping there. In my previous review I talked about the effect that changeover and staff had on my enjoyment of shopping there. I went back again today after the pandemic and did not know any of the staff and struggled to get help. I was specifically looking for a charm packs. I know the store quite well and noticed from the front of the store that I did not see any. When I asked about them I was told to go to a certain location of the store. I did this, and all I found were jelly rolls and one layer cake. They only charms they had were white/off-white solids. As I went to leave the store she called after me and asked if there was something I needed help with, she was a cashier destroyer. And I told her they didn't have any charms. She went over there immediately and by the time I had gotten near the door offered me a layer cake and solid color charm packs. Everything else was batik 2 1/2 in packages. All I can think is there must be some supply problem because of the pandemic. But they did not have a single pack of charm squares that were used to me and the project I'm starting. And the person helping me obviously did not know what charm packs were, or jelly rolls or anything else. I'm trying to do a project quickly and wanted some pre-cuts. I wanted charms to blend the fabrics for me. I did not have time to shop for a dozen different fabrics to go into a quilt and then have a lot of overage. I'll check back in a month or so and see if their supply has been updated. They do a beautiful fabrics, they now do in-house quilting, which Is something I like to do myself, but they are set up to quilt for you, if you wish. I started with the review in the early years with 5 Star and then went to 4 stores, because their knowledgeable original staff are no longer available. And now I'm giving them three stars. I hope they fix their act because this was a great quilt store and enjoyable to learn and browse in. read more

I went in to the shop today, the end of October 2022, to buy backing and binding fabric and batting for a quilt top I just finished. I brought a friend who is interested in classes and learning about quilting. I was surprised to see that their mask requirement is still in effect. I was in a few weeks ago and was told they'd be lifting the requirement soon. This time, though, I was stopped at the door. When I asked why they are still requiring masks I was told it's because they're "short staffed." I didn't understand that, but then asked if they have masks to provide, because I don'carry one anymore and only wear them in doctors offices. I was told I would have to pay $2 for a mask! I turned around and left and won't be back. I would have spent close to $100 today, and introduced a new customer to their store. I spent over $75 a few weeks ago. They have lost a customer over a $2 mask and an unnecessary policy. I love supporting local businesses and this one has beautiful fabrics. I used to think their customer service was excellent but this policy feels punitive and certainly doesn't make good business sense. I've used the Quilters Studio for fabric purchases in the past, specifically for the back of a quilt, binding, and what ended up being a shower curtain. I had seen the shower curtain fabric on an earlier visit, but didn't purchase it and became totally obsessed. When I came back a season later they had no memory of the fabric I described. I was dejectedly looking for another fabric to suit my needs when a sales lady came from the back holding the bolt of fabric I was thinking of. I almost shrieked "THAT'S IT!" and may have hugged her. Though terrified of me, the sales lady was very nice and rung me up for the now-discounted fabric. Haven't asked many questions of the sales staff, so I can't comment on their ability to answer them. But I have been very pleased with the fabric I came for. read more

I had a twin size quilt finished & there were 3 very large pleats sewn into the back of my quilt & even some on the front. I was told they would give me a discount on my 2nd quilt. The owner was very sorry, but said it was the batting I chose that caused the problems, not them. They won't be getting a 2nd chance from me. The batting I chose was Warm & Natural & I've never had a single problem till now apparently. The store has a great variety of beautiful fabrics & I hate to not be returning but unless I'm in dire straits I won't be going back. They have lost a good customer in me. Had they offered to make this quilt right I'd never leave. This quilt is a Christmas present for my oldest daughter who lost all of her quilts 2 years ago in a house fire. So, be very wary if you use their long arm service. read more

I called the store today as I have been making masks for a nursing home during the COVID-19 crisis. My machine broke down and I need to have it looked at. The woman on the phone seemed very agitated, I could hear voices as if there were a few people close by, and she was quite short with me. The store offers curb side pick up and delivery, so I thought this was a good thing. Now I'm beginning to wonder if it is only for heavy machines?? Because when I discussed when to bring in the machine, I was told that I couldn't pay over other phone.. I'd have to come into the store. Really! We are about at peak with this virus and they are having people come in the store???? This should be considered a health hazard and the authorities contacted to investigate. The governor has already stated we need to stay home as much as possible and go out only for essentials , gloved and masked. Shopping for fabric should not be an essential. I would appreciate paying over the phone and having them fetch and return the machine to my car, with them masked and gloved to keep themselves and myself safe. Allowing business to go on in this not so large store at this time is a health hazard due to proximity of everything in it. I am very concerned and not even sure I want to ask a younger person to go and fetch it for me ( with a check yet) Very disappointed. read more

Disappointed. Thought I had found a great new quilting store. Purchased a marking pen last week and it did not work as advertised. Went to return it today and was told only the owner can authorize returns and she won't be in until later. Understand the no return policy, but when it's on an item that does not work as it should, then at least allow a store credit. Owner needs to authorize her staff to make common sense decisions. Don't know if it matters as I came in to purchase fabric and materials for a few projects. The $9.99 non returnable item just cost them close to $200.00 in a purchase. read more
