I love Artistic Artifacts!! They always have good quality fabrics and plenty of other mixed media to keep you inspired. The team of people working there are also amazing. They are always friendly and willing to help. They definitely have the most variety of fabrics I've seen in the area. While some can be pricey I promise they're worth it! They also have plenty of rotating quilt bundles if you need inspiration! Bonus that they also have good technicians if you need to get your machine serviced. I will say my only complaint is I wish there were more fabric types. They obviously specialize in quality cotton/linen fabrics but I would love to see more types! read more

What a little gem found in Alexandria! Artistic Artifacts, owned by Judy, offers both new and vintage supplies for for fiber and mixed media artists, particularly embroidery, sewing, and fabric work. They also have tjaps, ink, pens, tools, paints, embellishments, wood blocks, stencils, stamps, and other various items that can be quite overwhelming in their neatly arranged but extensive selection of a shop! They're also an authorized BERNINA dealer and offers mastery classes; there are also other classes to sign-up for, too, such as dying! When you step inside, there is a work room in the back; the whole-group classes can be held in their warehouse and/or in their parking lot. The staff here are so welcoming and so friendly, and they allow you to peruse at your own leisure. Currently, to follow certain procedures during these uncertain times, you are required to make an appointment on their website for the date and the time to schedule your shopping at this store - thank you for having this in place and being mindful! I do have a small sewing machine, so I'm not sure if I'll ever try approaching this (hopefully, soon!), but I know where I can ask questions and obtain all my materials from! I have never made a Yelp review but absolutely had to after visiting this store. I came in yesterday to find some fabric for a very last minute project. EVERYONE working was so kind and helpful but special thank you to Elizabeth who went above and beyond to help me find the perfect fabric and even stayed late to help me finish my project. The selection they offer is extremely wide and I saw so many beautiful fabrics. They also had a ton of cool vintage pieces and sewing machines/sergers. So I broke my Bernina 850, the thread update broke off (no clue how), so I needed a true Bernina tech. On top of that, it froze up again. I was TRULY grateful to find this shop. The part I needed is not available from Bernina any longer. When the shop called to tell me this news, they suggested eBay. YES! eBay had one. SCORE. I came back with my piece, they fix that problem and several others. The price was 100 percent fair. Everyone I dealt with was beyond nice, professional and kind. With senses of humor. When I picked up my machine I had an appointment to go to otherwise I would have bought fabric. The selections are amazing. Plus notions and sewing machines. What a great shop. I'm new to sewing, Judy and her staff are very patient with me, they are so helpful. I've heard it said that it's a dangerous place for your wallet. But, the staff is very thoughtful in directing you to just what you need, at your level. And, if I'm taking the time to learn and make something special, I appreciate quality products. Months ago I was excited to find Barbara Yates Beasley would be teaching here, and I eagerly signed up. I was willing to fly to Denver to take her class, but chose Artistic Artifacts because it was closer, (10 hour drive). After spending approximately 1000.00, for class fee, travel, hotel and meals, I was well pleased with The instructor, but extremely disappointed in the store. No one welcomed us and no introduction of the instructor was given. Chairs were so nasty and stained, that it appeared incontinent ladies had sat in them for years. One trash can and two ironing boards were supplied for a class of 16! The only time the owner was seen was when she appeared for the first time in the classroom to announce that we would be moved on the third day of class to the warehouse. When asked if warehouse was air conditioned, the reply was "Yeah, it's called a door." Poor lighting and we were being bumped for a monthly class for her local students. Only after the class rebelled, were we allowed to stay, and when a fellow student thanked her for that decision, she replied "she didn't have a choice." Several students budgeted hundreds of dollars to spend with the store, which didn't happen because of the rude treatment. I should have flown to Denver for Barbara's Class. read more

I have placed two orders now and both times the order was confirmed as accepted but both times they sold the items and put my order in hold status and offered substitute items or extensive delay. The delay was okay but the substitute items were not really what I needed and I will be hard pressed based on this performance to order from them again. Jen admitted they have a flawed process but that really isn't a solution if they aren't going to do anything about it and continue to have issues. read more

I love having a place where I can take such a wide variety of classes, whether it's quilting, dyeing, surface design... My favorite was making wax stamp batik fabrics with artisans from Indonesia. I also have my Bernina 440 serviced here and they usually have it cleaned and ready for me pretty quick. I don't trust anyone with my machine that isn't certified to service Berninas. The staff is always helpful and friendly. read more

On a snowy day in WA, the staff spent extra time showing me the mediums and the possibilities of fiber art when she could have gone home. She let me spread things out as I perused the options and built a project. I left more knowledgeable and confident than when I arrived. During the 2 hr flight home, I designed my project. This store is amazing and very dangerous for your wallet. I am an art journaler and am always looking for fun papers, stamps, stencils, and ephemera that you can't seem to find at the big-box craft stores. I found so many amazing goodies here: old player piano rolls, cigar boxes, packs of crumbly sheet music, as well as stamps, inks, and I think every Crafters Workshop stencil every made. My mom is an art quilter and found beautiful fabrics, laces, buttons, and silk screens. And the really nice thing was I felt like I came out of the store with a bag full of goodies and my wallet wasn't weeping. I'll definitely be signing up for some classes and making monthly visits. We went for a 3 day class along with 15 other people. The guest instructor is from Colorado and most of the attendees traveled several hours to attend, a few even flying or driving in from other states (Florida, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Maryland.) If you have attended a similar event in the past, you know that these events are a big deal, quite pricey and scheduled many months or years in advance. No one from the shop welcomed us, introduced the instructor, told us where the bathrooms were, help arrange lunch or had snacks or water available.The bathroom was out of paper towels, the trash cans in the classroom were not emptied. In the middle of the second day the owner announced that she "overbooked" her facility and that our next days' class would be held in the warehouse as another class was coming in and needed the tables in our classroom because they had "$10,000 machines that must be on solid tables." When asked if there was electric, air conditioning, lighting, etc... we were answered with "sure, it's called a loading door and fans." The only saving grace of her announcement is that she said if we had complaints, complain to her not her staff. At least she respects her staff enough to do that. The class complained. She "reversed" her decision and we remained inside in the classroom, however they would swap the table and put the other group in the warehouse! It was 92 degrees the day that class had to work in there. One student thanked her for leaving our class in place and her reply was "well, I really didn't have a choice, did I?" In many years of taking classes, attending events and visiting many stores in multiple states (and countries) I've never felt so unwelcome or treated like a second class citizen. I feel terrible for the class that ended up in the warehouse. There were many other solutions to this situation, she could have moved merchandise on the floor out of the way (it was Sunday - the store was closed for retail shopping) and set up tables, rented a room at a hotel or meeting facility, asked the attendees if they wanted a partial refund, offered store credit or simply apologized. A heartfelt apology would have gone a long way with this group. I honestly and truly hope that this owner was simply having a bad day (or days) and this was a one time thing. I never post reviews but if you plan to take a class at this shop, make sure you know all the details and be prepared to fend for yourself. The instructor on the other hand was fabulous and made an uncomfortable situation worth while with her knowledge and inspiration. read more

This shop has an incredible array of supplies and inspirational finds for anyone interested in exploring fiber arts, surface design, book arts,art quilts and so much more. you will find unique fabrics of Aboriginal design, batiks made in Thailand that are ONLY available through this source, vintage fabrics, imported stitching threads , hand dyed silk and cotton threads, an amazing selection of stencils for work on paper,and fabric. all sorts of textile paints and dyes and bits, baubles and special and unique treasures to add to any sort of creative art project. Artistic Artifacts Annex carries an amazing line of hand carved wood block stamps created in India and antique brass tjaps from Thailand. You will also find a full schedule of classes and workshops as well as a free Art Group that meets monthly for artistic adventures and fellowship. I think I passed the place about three times before I found it. It's hard to find anything on Eisenhower over there. The place was very nice and had a lovely selection of threads, fabric and decorative fabric stamping. I am a beginner sewer. I just got a sewing machine for Christmas and just needed some thread to get me started. At the time I went in there I wasn't even sure if I was going to be able the thread my machine let alone sew anything. I sewed a little on my mom's machine as a kid, but that's about it. The woman working there was VERY nice, helpful and not once made me feel silly for having no idea what I was even looking for. The fabric did seem a little on the expensive side, and I don't recall seeing that many art supplies that they advertise. For right now, I'll probably stick with a place where I can get cheaper fabric, but once I get more adept at sewing I'll probably return to this store. I got the impression that they are very happy to help you with any silly question you may have. They run classes too that I may wind up looking into. Customer service is outstanding. Artistic Artifacts is an amazing shop offering an eclectic range of traditional, contemporary, vintage and 'great finds' for quilters, seamstresses and artists alike! I recently attended a 3 day workshop designing pet portraits with Barbara Beasley. Thank you, thank you, thank you, AA, for making this opportunity available. You always surpass my expectations by scheduling too international and national quilt artists/teachers who are the best in their craft and who would normally only be available at big quilt shows/venues. Barbara is without a doubt a great artist and engaging teacher. Wow! What we learned! I appreciated the informative and friendly email you sent to the students before class with information on local restaurants, your own refrigerator and microwave for our use (What a bonus!!), local sights for the out of town visitors and a 10% discount for purchases while attending the workshop. It could not have been more welcoming! We could even arrive 30 minutes early to set up. The classroom was well lit, roomy, comfortable with plenty of irons to share as we each worked on our designs. I don't think I ever had to wait for an iron! I think you made the best if the situation when it looked like we would have to switch rooms, but true to your great customer focus and coordination, all we had to do was take our supplies with us for a night while the tables were swapped to accommodate the sewing machines in the other class. When we arrived the next morning, we set up in the same spots in your comfortable office chairs and were fast at work on our designs. Your staff, as always, was accommodating and friendly. Had we had to move to the warehouse location, I dare say we would have still been able to create! Thanks for making the best of a challenging situation, of keeping us informed and for making workshops like this possible. This is a MUST see shop! Don't miss it!!! read more

Artistic Artifacts is one of my favorite places to be. Yes, it is a store but it is so much more. I like to go by myself so there is no pressure as to when I leave. You shop once and you are greeted by name the next time you go. The store has stuff for any art project you want to do and if you don't know how to do it, you will by the time you leave. Ever class I have taken has been well worth the one way hour plus drive or staying overnight for a 2 day class. Then on the 3rd Sunday on the month, the eclectic JAMs group meets. It is Judy's Altered Minds gathering where creative/ artistic/ passionate people share creations and ideas for all mixed medium applications. Sometimes on the drive home my brain is buzzing with ideas on how I can use an art application in my fabric medium or do I try another.
