Well, I haven't written a review on a business that wasn't a restaurant in a while, buuuuuut here we go. I wasn't expecting much when I walked in, mostly because I had an online return and I wasn't looking for anything. What I found, however, was good customer service. A woman a head of me was going THROUGH it with a large purchase (none of my business, but it seemed messy lol). Luckily, another associate, Jake, took the initiative to help me with my return and get me out of there. He was calm and patient and seemed to know what he was doing even though he confessed it was his 4th day on the job. Not to mention my online return gave him a hard time on the POS system. Also, thank you to the manager or lead that was back there with him, coaching where necessary - I did not catch her name. I love to see it! I don't know if it was just the particular day we decided to go or if this is the norm for this location, 1but this was not a good shopping experience. Walking into the store, there were boxes all over the place and ladders and equipment littering a lot of the aisles, so it was almost impossible to move through with a stroller without running into a ladder or boxes. The few staff that were around looked pretty aloof or distracted and overall disinterested in helping you locate anything. Also, for some reason, the bathrooms were locked so I sought out an employee who told me they were having plumbing issues (also not a great look) , so I was sent scurrying out of the store to find the nearest bathroom where my toddler could potty before there was an accident. All of this I could probably overlook if they at least had the type of gem stickers I was looking for, but sadly their selection in the scrapbook selection was pretty weak. It's been years since I last visited a Michaels location but I don't remember the service and overall store quality being so poor. Needless to say, I won't be back. read more

I stopped in to pick up a few things to make my house look nicer and the staff not only helped by actually walked me to the location where the items were. I didn't realize there was a bottom floor to the store. If you stop in, make sure that you go downstairs there's a whole other level of interesting things for you to get into so that you can be creative too. read more

Due to the poor customer service at this location, I will no longer be shopping at Michaels. I called to check the availability of an item, as the website is often inaccurate regarding in-store pickup inventory (which has been an ongoing issue). From the moment my call was answered, the associate had an unfriendly tone before I even spoke. When I asked if someone could check on an item, I was placed on hold and told it would be "one minute." That "one minute" turned into over 30 minutes on hold. I likely would have been waiting even longer had I not hung up and called back. A 30+ minute hold time for a simple inventory check is unacceptable. Even if the associate was busy, a quick update or transferring the call to another team member would have been the professional approach. Unfortunately, this experience reflects a lack of basic customer service standards, and as a result, I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

My 5 year old granddaughter needed to use the restroom and she was refused entry. Apparently, they recently closed their restrooms to the public but all the signage still indicates the presence of restrooms. I was told it's their policy to refuse entry to customers, even a 5 year old in obvious distress. Besides being unfriendly, it was just cruel. read more

Very poor service.. No one to help find item. Self-service machines are seen over by young girl who mumbles. Several customers before me said, "don't even try to understand her." While overall the store is decidedly terrible, this review references the "professional" framers. I dropped off two items to be framed - very simple frames and matting - but the process took nearly an hour. I was told it would be ready in a week, but received no email confirmation of the order. On the day it was supposed to be ready I called the store and it was as if no one had ever asked for the status of a framing order. At one point I was on hold for 20 minutes just to check the status of the order, and I still got no answer. This is my ultimate Favorite Michaels. Love Love Love this place for my crafting needs. I visit a few times a week and I must say I am not disappointed. I can always find what I need. The prices and sale items are always accurate. The staff is awesome and led by wonderful managers. Every person on this staff is wonderful Gabby, David, Jasmine, Jasmyn, Kristen and all the others are always helpful filled with smiles and laughter. I can spend hours there. I am so glad they are there. I travel about 20 mikes to go here and it's worth the trip. I will always visit for my crafting needs. One of the managers, Kristen has the most contagious smile and fun hair. She's helpful and knowledgeable of all crafts. Plz ask for her when you visit. The cleanliness of this store is amazing. The bathroom is spotless and smells wonderful. There is nothing on the floors. I've seen staff rush to pick things up to avoid falls. I hope your visit will be as happy as mine has been. Dropped off a poster to get framed because they were having a 70% discount. I dropped off my poster to be framed on September 22, 2018. The associate was very helpful and walked me through what frames are best for my poster. They took a picture of my poster and showed me a couple different images of what different frames look like around my poster. I chose a frame and paid. They gave me a picture of what the poster will look like and the receipt. There was a date shown on the receipt for when the order will be ready but the lady said it could be a day or two later. The pick up date said October 6, 2018. Two weeks later I didn't hear back so I called on Monday, October 15 to find out the status. The woman said the poster will be ready by Wednesday. I received a call on Friday saying my poster is ready for pick up. I arrived on Saturday, October 20 and they unveiled the framed poster. Unfortunately, there was a big, noticeable crease in the upper left corner of the poster. There were no creases before because I unrolled the poster when they took pictures to show what the other frames would look like. I told her about the crease and she said it's better to come in the next day because the manager would be in the office. I arrived the next day and showed the manager (Julie) the crease in the upper left corner. She apologized and said they could probably resolve it by using some time of black marker that can cover these type of issues. She said she will call me when it's been fixed and then we can talk about getting a discount for the poster. I said no problem and I'll wait for the call. Two weeks later, I haven't heard anything so I called back and the manager (Julie) said the poster has not been fixed yet but will call me in a couple days after the crease is covered. Julie called me a week later (I believe I received the phone call on Friday, November 2) saying the crease cannot be covered up so they will use a MAT to surround the frame and should cover up the crease. She apologized and said I will not be charged for the MAT cover and she will call me when the poster is done. I called them today (Wednesday, November 28, 2018) to find out the status of my poster. The gentleman in the Framining Department (didn't get a name) said nothing has been done with my poster. I asked when the manager will be in and he said tomorrow (November 29). I told him to give Julie my contact information so I can get my poster back before the end of 2018. I'm hoping to get a call tomorrow and, hopefully, some can fix my poster. I got the poster when I visited Germany so, unfortunately, it's not easy to get another one. I told them this when I was purchasing the poster and would be very hard to get another copy but still got creased. I would not recommend this store for any framing needs. I paid over $300 to get my poster framed and that is after receiving a 70% discount. It has been over 2 months since I dropped off my poster and still NOTHING has been done to it, other than getting damaged. read more

This business is a fraud. I paid several hundred dollars for a portrait to be framed. I paid extra for the non glass option. They did a half ass job, ripped me off, used glass for the framing job, and gave me hell when I tried to complain after the glass broke and destroyed the portrait underneath. this business is a fraud that will find a way to get every extra dollar out of you, then will replace what you paid top dollar for, with cheap crap that will do damage to your property. If i could leave a zero I would. The whole process of getting a painting framed from here has been a nightmare. I picked up my picture today and the heads were cut off. Adam claimed that the painting was not even which force him to do that. Never once did I get a call. I went to pick the paint up a week ago and there was a new lady there that could not help me. She did not ask for an ID to verify who I was to give me my painting. The store manager does not follow up when he say he will. I had to contact corporate about my issues. I'm deducting 1 star for this location lack of floral options and other inventory compared to the other locations in the Alexandria/Arlington area. I know this location can fit more than what they currently have. Michaels is one of my most favorite stores to visit regularly, and I was so stoked when they opened this location meaning that I won't have to visit Falls Church or Springfield location which is kind of a trek from my location on Pentagon City. What sets this location apart is a Fabulous inventory of planner and planner accessories AND the staff is the most courteous, and helpful staff I've ever come across at Michaels. All the times I've asked for help they've always come through, and when they don't have a solution they ask someone else. read more

"Are you serious?" That was the question posed to me by the cashier this evening when I asked for a $4 refund for a photo box, usually priced $6.99, on sale for $2.99. At first she had told me that I would not get any money, but "next time..." I didn't let her finish, since she'd over-charged me. No reason to pay the wrong price. I explained that I wanted to pay the advertised price. Could I have a refund for the difference? "Are you serious?" she asked. Then she told me I'd have to wait until other customers had been tended to, even though there was another cashier on duty and only 2 more parties were in line. I went to get the sign that showed the sale price, thinking she didn't believe me. When I returned and she saw the sign, she ordered me to return it. Twice. As if I worked there. That's when I asked for a manager. She grudgingly refunded me the whole price I had paid, and then triumphantly asked me if I'd like to buy the photo box. To quote you, my dear: ARE YOU SERIOUS?" I needed some specific cookie cutters to execute dinner service on Valentines Day at Tico DC and found only one store had them in stock in my DC area. I ordered online and went to the store to pick up. I met Jessica who looked everywhere but did not find them. She showed me alternatives because someone had bought the item while my order was still in the queue. Very friendly and chill person to me even though I appeared frustrated and upset. I was frantic and asked to speak with the manager. Jean approached me and took me to all the heart shaped cutters in the store in different areas. Not once did she dismiss me or make a empty excuse. She found an item that was even better than what I needed. She said the magic words to me, "what can I do to make you happy?" I explained my budget and she went above and beyond and saved the Day!!! I am extremely disappointed in this location, so many of the employees are beyond dazed and confused. I have been going to Michael's for YEARS for everything from my children's school projects to wedding and reception planning. I was walking around the store with my daughter yesterday looking for Halloween decorations when she picked up a ceramic skull that cut her hand. Immediately I told her to use the restroom to clean up and I would find someone to assist. I approached TWO employees that were standing around chatting and reported the broken item and informed them my daughter nicked her hand on it. Absolutely NO apology or acknowledgement they just took it and said "Okay, we'll put it away." I did not expect them to call an ambulance but a simple apology or offer of the first aid box would have sufficed. I walked away boiling. Zero professionalism or experience with customer service or basically being a helpful human being. PLEASE TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES BETTER! I spend a lot of money at your store! read more

This location is two levels and usually has what I'm looking for. A bit less organized than most I've been through but the three star rating was for the custom mats I ordered for a framing project in my house. 5 identical 11x14 mats to fit a certain print that I brought with me to the consult (as well as the intended frame). After two weeks and almost $200, I received them back. Packed very nicely but as I went to assemble the frames, two had to be cut down and two others had corners that needed to be fixed. read more

That was with their "double coupon" of 50% + 25% off. Their coupons are like the year-round "Going out of business sale" at the mattress store. After months of seeing the "coming soon" sign at the Bradlee Shopping Center, it's finally open! Now the craft/hobby-inclined people of fairlington/shirlington don't have to trek out to seven corners for supplies. It's a Michaels, so you know for the most part already what you're getting into, as it's similar to all the other stores. It's two levels and seems to have a nice, well-stocked selection. There were a lot of people there when I went, but plenty of cashiers working, which was helpful. We got through the line quickly. read more

Checked the website before driving across town to confirm this store had a large stock of the tote bags I need for my son's class. Guess what happened when I arrived? Not a single one. Zilch. Zero. Spoke to a salesperson and the manager. Rude and unhelpful. Answer was basically, oh well, but we're sorry, ma'am. Mumbled something in corporate speak that made no sense. Also said that if I had preordered for pick up, which was an option on the website, somebody might have called to tell me they didn't actually have the item. Or maybe they wouldn't have bothered. Not clear. Do people seriously wonder why brick and mortar stores are going out of business? Came back to my car and ordered from Amazon in the parking lot. I dropped off an antique map to mount and to replace the glass. It took 3 weeks, and when I picked it up, my map had been torn and someone had tried to repair. I realize accidents can happen. However, the fact that I wasn't notified of the tear and someone "hoped" I wouldn't notice really upset me. This does not speak well of a business that anyone should use. Simple framing order turned into a 2-month long ordeal... This location is still very new so I'm trying to cut them some slack, but they are incredibly unorganized. Placed an order on Dec. 3 for a custom frame, estimated completion date of Dec. 17. Having heard nothing from the store we went back in on the 17th to check on the status. After some confusion the store realized they had forgotten to place the order. Fast forward three more weeks and we finally get a call that our frame is done! We head to the store to pick it up, the store rep unwraps it to show it to us and......the entire face of the frame is completely scratched up. It looked like it had scraped against something very sharp; absolutely destroyed. Michael's - check your customers' orders before you tell them they are ready! So the store places a new order telling us to return in another 2 weeks. Fast forward 2 weeks I go to the store and they tell me the order isn't ready. When will it be ready? They don't know. At this point I got pretty upset and told them I just wanted to take my piece and get it framed elsewhere. That's when the manager came out, who was actually very nice, agreeing to completely refund me and finish the job. This is the only reason the store gets 2 instead of 1 star. The product took another 2 more weeks to arrive, at which point I received a call from the manager saying it was ready. We head to the store to find that the sole employee in the framing department was on break. We had to sit around for 40 minutes waiting for someone else to find our order, which we later learned was wrapped, unmarked, and without any accompanying paperwork, thus not surprising that no one could find it. Go to the Springfield Michael's. They do a much better job and get things done on time. The King Street location seems to be struggling with basic store management including employee training and communication. Hopefully they can turn things around. read more

Don't shop there! Horrible customer service. I normally love Michaels but not this one. I called the framing shop about 15 minutes before they closed to ask a quick question about availability of a product. I'd called another Michaels and knew my question only took 2 minutes. First they put me on hold for a long time. I finally hung up and called back 5 minutes before they closed. The woman in the frame department wouldn't help because they were closing soon. I commented 3 times that they are still open for another 5 minutes. First she said she was leaving. Then she said the store was closed (which it wasn't). Then she said the system was down because they were closing. I called back and spoke to a manager who apologized and admitted the system was not down but he didn't know how to look that information. The woman just didn't want to help (and the manager said she had just left.). If you need any help with framing, don't go to this Michaels. The one in Arlington is MUCH more helpful! read more

I am a former interior designer, now working for a non-profit, and I still go to Michael's for all my framing needs. In all honesty I have framed over 500 pictures there, some quite complicated requests, and I only had one mishap in all those years which was promptly corrected. Jennifer has been there at least 6 years, if not more, and has a great eye and is an absolute delight to work with. I have probably saved more than $100,000 on orders over the past 20 years. Times are tough right now and we should all make it easy for one another during these times. I have always shopped at Michaels because they have really good prices and more selections of art and craft supplies. I been to this Michaels a couple of times but this experience has been the worst. I have worked in retail before myself but the attitude that I received from the employees from this location was disappointing. They had their prices marked wrong on an item and when I try to use a coupon that they sent me as part of my loyal rewards card gave me attitude instead of helping me understand why they couldn't. I wish they made it clear or put it in their fine print that coupons cannot be used on prices marked wrong in stores especially when it is a regular priced item. In the end they ended up giving me the coupon which I appreciated but gave me attitude while doing so. I pray that whatever the team members are going through becomes easy for them. The attitude and unwilling customer service I received from the team members makes me feel like I am not appreciated or valued as a loyal customer here to even receive a bit of kindness therefore I won't be coming back to this location. read more

I am extremely disappointed in the framing section of this store. We were told they would have our picture framed by October 7th. On the 7th we called, they explained there was an error in ordering our frame but we should have it by October 14th because they would expedite the request. The 14th rolls around and no call from Michael's. We call them and they say another week, we will have it by October 21st. Again, we did not receive a phone call so we called today October 22nd and were told a "few more days.." At this point I doubt we will receive it back before Thanksgiving. Very disappointed in the customer service and lack of respect for following through when customers are promised a product by a certain date. Don't trust them to do any custom framing unless you are ok with having to wait over a month and constantly following up with them. read more

Not sure what the business strategy is for Michaels. It seems like they have decided to be less of a craft store and more of a dollar store/party city. This new location is no different. Aisles and aisles of junk and only one and a half of yarn. Limited in other areas as well when it comes to actual crafting supplies. I like that it has two floors and it seems to be well organized and neat. For now anyway. Like all Michaels, this one is no different in that it does not stock the 300 lb sheets of watercolor paper that I use and their prices for paint brushes, paint etc....are astronomical in comparison to real art supply stores. Nine times out of ten, I go in looking for something in particular and come out empty handed or settling for something that isn't exactly what I wanted. But my biggest issue in this particular store is the employees. Could they have hired a more clueless group of people? When we went down the escalator we were met by three guys who looked more like they belonged on a football team than working in a craft store. And they were doing everything they could to avoid eye contact and ask if anyone needed help with anything. It was really kind of comical. We walked around and found two more employees chit chatting while hiding in the back corner near the yarn. The manager was barking out orders every now and again, but clearly, these are not people I could go to with a craft question. I'm not going to ask some teenaged guy in dreadlocks halfway down his back if they carried the crochet hook I needed. You could see that these kids were completely uncomfortable with talking to the customers. And I already knew he would have no idea what a crochet hook even was. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it. I'll go out on a limb and say that no one working in the store that day (even the manager) has ever picked up a craft/hobby in their life. At least that is the feeling we got. It doesn't give you a warm fuzzy feeling about a place when the entire staff is trying to avoid you. The environment felt awkward at best, and immediately turned my husband and I off. I guess time will tell what happens. Maybe it will improve and I sincerely hope it does. On top of that, they did not have two of the color yarns I was looking for, which was a Red Heart brand dark red and a dark green. No excuse for that. With the Holidays coming you'd think they'd be stocked on those two colors. And the watercolor tube paints were locked behind a glass case, which I have never seen before. We looked for someone on the floor to help us so I could get a tube of Windsor Newton Black and after about ten minutes, we gave up. So it was a wasted trip. I was really looking forward to having a Michaels a little closer to home, but it seems like Michael's is marketing to someone other than an artist/crafter like myself. I don't go there to pick up Halloween decorations and dollar store items. I'll just be getting my stuff on line from now on. I've completely given up on this chain. read more
