The Pool Store is next to my local Stater Bros grocery store so i pass it 3 times a week and occasionally I have purchased pool toys, rice hats for shade during our summers, and other little items. I don't have a pool in my current home but I will be buying a home with a pool in 2018.
Last week I had a house guest with a small child and in advance I bought a little pokemon blow up pool from The Pool Store as it was convenient to me. The young man working there was barely communicative but all I needed was this little $20 pool and I was out.
When the mother of the child who was staying at my house told me the pool was not something that she would be needing for her child, I took the unopened item back to the store the next day with the receipt and asked for the money to be put back on my debit card from which it came. The same barely communicative young man informed me that it was store policy to give store credit. I wasn't going to argue with this guy because it was clear he had neither the authority nor the brain cells to make decisions. I took the store credit and was on my way.
A week later, I returned to the store looking for the owner, Cindy, who I presumed had the maturity, authority, and good business sense to make a smart decision. When I greeted her in the store this morning, she barely had the energy to greet me with a smile or anything less than a dour look. I explained the situation and asked her to convert the store credit back into a return to my debit card and she explained the same store policy and trotted out the old line that if she broke the policy for me, then she would have to break the policy for everyone. No, Cindy, use the brain that the good Lord gave you and break the policy when appropriate. I responded that I am a banker in one of the most regulated industries in the United States and that we have policies from the minute I walk into the building until the minute I leave the building at night, but that I have the experience, authority, and good business sense to bend a policy to make a client happy when there is an opportunity to keep a hard won client. It's just a cost versus benefit calculation.
Cindy explained that as a banker I should know that it costs her 10% of every transaction to either charge a debit card or refund a debit card. I do understand that absolutely....after tax, that $21.61 purchase and subsequent refund would have cost her $4.32 to make me a happy, satisfied, and returning customer.
To review, dour Cindy got the over priced kiddie pool back in the same condition I bought it so she could sell it again, she saved her $2.16 in debit card fees, and she got the value of the $21.61 store credit because I tore it up in front of her and put it in the trash can. She clearly needed the $21.61 more than I did.
What she lost is the profit on all the purchases I would have ever made at her store because the Pool Store was so convenient. Congratulations Cindy....you just further endeared me to Amazon, ya stupid git! read more
