It may be hidden away in Data Alley, but it's well worth the drive. They feature a menu replete with St Louis Ribs, gumbo, catfish, whiting, Mac n Cheese, Greens w Smoked Turkey, candied yams, banana pudding, homemade sweet potato pie and more! This was such a find. We had the 1/2 pound catfish platters and the batter was seasoned so perfectly. Additionally, the candied yams were cooked with just the right mix of sweet and savory and I could have had second. Greens are difficult to nail, and C & E nailed the texture and flavor. So good -- just add a little hot sauce and you're ready to eat! The potato salad and fried okra are also tasty options. Next time, we'll try the Mac n cheese. To finish the meal, we really enjoyed the special dessert: peach cobbler cinnamon roll. My spouse loved the banana pudding as well. 10/10 recommend! There's no fussing about or pretentious gussied-up-ness with this roadside stand that sits in the Shell gas station lot. Last I was here, they had a little tent that was at the mercy wind. Now, there's a nice truck to keep them out of the weather. Also, instead of dripping sauce in my car like before, I can now eat at a couple of new high tables and seats next to the truck. Fantastic improvements from before. The best part is of course is the menu. I noticed some new items have been added to it. That menu really does change from week to week and that's keeps me coming back. I had the dry rub ribs which were phenomenal when you dip it in their sauce which was sweet and vinegary at the same time. Not dry but crisp outside and moist inside. I also tried the beef rib which was new and I really enjoyed it. They serve a single beef rib that's so big it won't even fit in the damn container. Tender, juicy, and has that fantastic wood grill smell to it. Crispy exterior but inside is very moist. Very tender and cuts easily. If you get this, don't bother getting anything else. It's a whole lotta lotta meat. Then top everything off with their delicious baked beans that comes with the order. It may seem pricey but for the quality and quantity, this is a great deal compared to other locations found within the walls of a restaurant. This is how I've imagined roadside bbq should be and I'm not disappointed. This place is just worth every mile of that 20 I travel to get here. I particularly loved the Szechuan broth - which I made sure to ask them to make vegetarian (be sure to ask beforehand as some broths are made with pork). From there, we fired up the grill with brisket, bulgogi, and, my favorite, the garlic shrimp! Everything was so juicy and paired perfectly with the sauce bar items we chose. But the food itself was honestly disappointing. The BBQ tasted bland, dry, and nowhere near worth the prices they charge. For a place that talks so much about authentic American BBQ, military pride, veterans, patriotism, and all the "support our heroes" branding, I expected way better food. Instead it felt like the atmosphere and marketing mattered more than what was actually on the plate. The military and first responder theme is everywhere, but after a while it starts feeling more like a marketing gimmick than a restaurant focused on quality BBQ. Even online, a lot of people seem to say the same thing -- overpriced food, average BBQ, and too much forced patriotic branding. If the food matched the hype, maybe it would make sense. Right now it just feels expensive for very average BBQ.
