Now, I should mention that I'm not exactly an apple fritter enthusiast. I probably have one every 4-5 years. But for whatever reason, I got a craving for one and couldn't shake it. Each visit became a running joke: "Maybe today?" This morning, sweet victory, and a candid from my partner. The apple fritter was finally there waiting for me, and the first bite immediately transported me back in time to being a little kid standing at the donut counter in my local Bashas. Warm, nostalgic, perfectly indulgent, and absolutely worth the wait. If you're lucky enough to get one before they're gone, do it. Apparently, the locals already know what they're doing. The restaurant is tiny, a narrow shotgun type unit in a building along main street. We managed to get one of their five tables and were promptly served drinks and time to look over the menu before ordering the Country Benedict. My coffee was kept filled as we waited for our order. As soon as the plate hit the table, I knew that even though the owner had changed, the spirit of the place remained. The plate of food was massive; more than the two of us could eat. The plate included two halves of an excellent biscuit, half of a large sausage patty on each, an over easy egg; all smothered in country sausage gravy. The other half of the plate had a mound of beautiful browned hash browns. Enough for four people or at least two very hungry people. It was glorious and nostalgic. The flavor was everything I wanted it to be. If you are in or near Durango, please consider giving this true old diner a try. They will serve breakfast during lunch and that is nice. For breakfast, I've enjoyed the Breakfast Burrito, tamale and eggs, and the omelettes. Everything has been pretty tasty so far. For lunch, there are sandwiches, soup and salad. There are also pastries/muffins available at the coffee shop that is right next to the cafe. You can order your special coffee/tea from that coffee shop while at Willows Cafe as well. Great place to stop for a quick tasty meal.

Located on the main drag leading out of town toward Silverton, it seems popular. There is a small parking lot that we were fortunate enough to find spot close to the door. Upon entering, there is a counter to the left and seating to the right. The seating is bar style, along with tables and booths. My wife chose a chicken salad sandwich and I chose the ham and Gruyere sandwich. They come with, in my opnion, rather flavorless tortilla chips. However, my sandwich is really a panini, toasted on the outside. It was very flavorful with a crunch on the outside due to being toasted but a chewy inside due to the ham and cheese. Really, a great texture, in my opinion. My wife felt the cashier had a bit of an attitude when she needed one of the soda dispensers changed out due to be empty. Like he was put out. Overall, we did like Sage Fresh Eats and would come again.
