We enjoyed our lunch at the Pickle Barrel. The wait staff were very friendly and efficient. The burgers and sandwiches were delicious and came out in a timely manner. Most people come from the train so have little time to spare. They know that here and make sure that service is quick and the food good. We were here a day before our train ride so when we took the train ride the next day one person in our party wanted to try another restaurant that day. That restaurant was just ok. Cute little restaurant, in a quaint little town. My dining partners enjoyed the toasted cheese ravioli on a bed of greens with delicious vinaigrette dressing. The Reuben sandwich, served with a generous serving of potato chips made for an amazing lunch. The service was above and beyond. Even though they were very busy when we were there, the server we had was very pleasant and humorous. Went back again on night two because the food and the service was great. Much appreciated. My delicious dinner began w/ home-baked bread, & a plate of fresh greens. I followed that w/ homemade corn chowder w/ ham (which was really good). The main dish was pork medallions, which wouldn't have suffered from some addl seasoning, a top-notch baked potato (complete w/ crispy skin, not steamed!) & fresh green beans, seasoned perfectly. Dessert was Whiskey Bread Pudding, & it was OUTSTANDING!! Service: Whitney was extremely accommodating, & efficient! The decor was rustic, simple, quaint...perhaps "farmhouse antique" might describe it best. The bill was around $25 (only water to drink.) A solid 4+ out of 5, & I'll be back!! There was a one star review about the owner throwing a fit about moved tables, we were in the restaurant at the same time and the customers moving the tables were very out of line and disrespectful. Stopped in here for dinner while staying in Silverton. It was a great choice! I don't think I've ever seen anyone move as fast as our waiter did. The Pickle Barrel is as quaint as the town of Silverton. Our family of four had both lunch and dinner there during our stay. Our lunch of burgers, a big fat hotdog, and chicken strips were delicious. The dinner menu offers even more selections and although the mahi-mahi and Walnut crusted chicken looked yummy, I couldn't resist the chicken fried chicken. With the snow blowing outside, we had a wonderful dinner next to a roaring fireplace, and topped it all off with a brilliant piece of chocolate cake and ice cream. The restaurant sits in what was described by the owner, Paul, as the oldest stone and mortar structure on the western slope and the history of both the building and the town surround you. Having said that, here's my two cents: From the outside, you'd think you were in for a great atmosphere, but then a dude in a sloppy tshirt and cargo shorts greets you with the unfriendly, "two?" The restaurant is cold, temperature-wise, as in we never took off our jackets, no music, as in you feel like the quiet conversation you're having has now become a part of everyone else's conversation, and the food is pretty so-so, as in wilted salad, highly processed buns on the burger offerings, and fries that likely have more ingredients than salt, oil, and potatoes. Will this place get you fed? Yes. Can you cook better than this at home? Absolutely. But will you look fondly on your trip to Silverton and remember this restaurant? No. read more

Great food and service. The entire town lights up and everyone in Silverton is ready for us tourist getting off the train. The service was fast, friendly and the food was fabulous. There are several options in Silverton and The Pickle Barrel is a fabulous option. Our blue cheese hamburger, pastrami sandwich the kids grilled cheese were all delicious. We liked the fact that they had some green saldas on the menu, and we in fact hit this place twice - once for each day we were in Silverton. OK, so this was my 3rd year in a row that i have come to ski silverton mountain.... i love this little town tucked up into the san juan mts... the whole town is pretty much closed up for business in the winter, but the pickle barrel is always an exception.... the building is OLD (like the whole town..) i think around 1890s-1900 kinda age... it's really not a whole lot different from the way it used to be as proven in the several turn-of-the-century photos on the walls... there is a nice big fireplace that is always roaring... very laid-back, family-type atmosphere... all three times i've been here, it is on a wednesday evening... the special is home-made meatloaf with mashed potato, gravy and veggies... with soup or salad... the meatloaf is the main reason i keep coming back!!!... i am not a big meatloaf fan, but this is REALLY EXCEPTIONAL meatloaf!!! there are several local beers available, as well as a decent wine list.... dessert is often home-made pie!!! my guess is that this place is open and full in the summer too... but i will always be back for the fresh powder!!! read more

The steak quesadilla was pretty good with well flavored beef, although the salsa was definitely mild Pace brand and not very good. The steak and cheese sub was good as well with nice flavor. They also have a few good beer choices, which are especially nice after a day on the mountain. There are few options for dinner during the winter in Silverton, and this was probably my favorite place to eat. read more
