I absolutely adore this little company that has a couple locations in Berkeley as well as seeing them at the farmers market I believe. Hands-down, my favorite freshly made pastas and raviolis! They also make fresh sauces of all different varieties, which are very well made and delicious! The location at Strawberry Creek Park also does biscotti, half bake pizza, bread, I think that's their main hub so they have a bigger kitchen and do all kinds of deliciousness. The last time we went to the little location off Monterey close to the Monterey Fish market in Berkeley, or maybe it's Albany... My absolute favorite bakery in the East Bay. Not only do they have the best pastries - pecan chewies, almond macarons, scones, etc. - they also have delicious breads and pastas. I don't even enjoy pasta, but am a sucker for their handmade raviolis, especially their butternut squash one. You can't leave without a loaf (or 2 ) of their olive rustic bread. A month ago we bought '3 cheese ravioli' and 'spinach ricotta ravioli' The cheese were good but as we started eating the spinach ravioli they had a very strong taste of clorox, so strong that after a few bites we all 3 felt a bit nauseous eating them. We wrote two emails to Phoenix and also called and left a message. To this day, we have not received any reply at all. We're a bit in disbelief, frankly. At $21.25 for 16 ravioli this was an expensive treat and from a business that has been in Berkeley for so long we were expecting not only a different product, of course, but also different treatment as customers. I picked up some pasta via the Too Good To Go app and was very happy with what I got for the amount paid. I had also bought a cookie on my visit and was not as happy with the cookie. Everything about the Phoenix Pastificio is 100\10. I discovered them on the TooGoodToGo app. They get major points for trying to refuse waste and truly hooking people up with incredibly delicious fresh pasta for 3.99. Like serious, I got at least 2.5 pounds of ravioli trimmings. I cut them up and portioned them out. I cooked 1/3 and had enough bolognese for a week, and I have two more bags in my freezer. It's such a hidden gem, you'd never know they supply grocery stores with fresh pasta from the outside. It's super beautiful and authentic Italian vibes inside and out. The man who helped me was SO kind. He answered my questions and gave me a cookie for free to try their baking. I will 100% be back to support them. I love them! read more

Made a purchase at their "window" (actually a door) location next to Hidden Cafe in Strawberry Creek Park. For any mushroom lovers out there, you must try the wild mushroom ravioli. It is phenomenal. I bought the fresh egg fettuccine from the Berkeley location. This was so bad it ruined the dish I was making (pasta with pesto). The fettuccine is bad in two ways: 1. The ingredients list suggests that only durhum (or semolina) flour was used. Fettuccine should be made with all white flour or sometimes a mixture of white flour and durhum. Using all durhum makes the pasta chewy, dense and tough - all durhum is normally used for dried or extruded pasta, not for a laminated egg pasta like fettuccine. 2. The cut of the pasta was much too thick. When I make pasta, I go to 7 or 8 on the Atlas machine. This was at about a 4. Combined with the denseness of the pasta, the result was and chewy. The pasta should be been 1/2 to 1/3 as thick as it was. [In theory with truly great dough you can get away with thicker pasta, but that is unlikely in a commercial operation]. You might say "oh, it's just a matter of taste." But I'm skeptical of this hypothesis because each of the recipe errors I listed also just happen to make the pasta much easier to prepare. Durhum flour is much easier to work with than white flour, because white flour makes more delicate pasta that rips much more easily when laminating (pressing) it. And thick pasta is much easier to make than make than thin pasta because the pasta needs fewer lamination steps and is less likely to tear. Phoenix Pastificio used to have a great restaurant where they served fresh pasta up on Shattuck near Virginia. They have certainly fallen since then. I recommend two key changes to the egg pasta fettuccine: (1) Use mostly white flour with maybe a bit of durhum; (2) press the pasta so each strand is much thinner. read more

I'm a fan of theirs from way back and while I can't get their pasta because of my gluten situation, they do have fantastic pastas, sauces, breads, and sweets. My husband still goes by when they are at the farmer's market. I had one guy give me advice on gluten free flours, that wasn't correct, but it was a good attempt. They make fresh pasta, macaroons, cookies, breads, and pastries that will blow your mind. While you can buy their goods at your local farmers market, it's even more fun to show up at their storefront-not-storefront and peek inside. You get a glimpse of their workspace - bakers hard at work, flour up to their elbows. There's never a line, and customer service cannot be beat. Folks have said this place is hard to find, so I'm going to clear up all the confusion: park near strawberry creek park. Walk across the green field. Notice a row of glass doors on the ground floor (you literally cannot miss them). Find the door toward the middle that says "Phoenix Pastifico." Walk inside and ring the bell. That's it! You did it! The couple who runs this place is incredibly kind and lovely. They often give me a dollar off the bill or an extra cookie for no reason at all. Their baked goods simply cannot be beat - the cookies are ginormous, bigger than your hand, not overly sweet, and chock full of deliciousness (try the walnut chocolate chip or the cinnamon-y oatmeal cookies!!). Their breads are perfection: try the baguette and the olive loaf. To give yourself a break from cooking for a few nights, pick up some of their ravioli - it's better than anything you can get in any store. Everything here makes for a great gift if you've been invited to a dinner party, and we always order an obscene number of cookies around the holidays. If you wanted fresh pasta that stands out, this is the place! We adore the habanero Serrano yellow bell pasta it is incredible especially in a fettuccine dish. They did discontinue this version of pasta and the owner Eric says he eats it every day and they brought it back, which made us very happy. read more

Besides their wonderful pastas and sauces, they make incredible, inventive pizza using their olive bread for the crust. The various combos are terrific -- but their pizzas tend to be heavy on toppings, and they aren't well "glued" to the crust by the small amount of cheese. So we always end up with vegetables in our laps. Maybe they could embed the veggies rather than have them sitting on top? With that one change, these pizzas would be perfect! read more

FOOD: This nondescript little "bakery" makes the most incredible, most exceptional Almond Macaroons in the world. These aren't the dry coconut balls that also call themselves macaroons. They also aren't the prissy little French macarons that cost an arm and a leg. These also cost an arm and a leg, but they're beautiful little meringue angels that I'd happily cut off my arm for. These macaroons are a remarkable explosion of both flavor and texture, with a satisfyingly crunchy crust that gives way to a creamy, gooey center that's brimming with fragrant almond notes. Then they layer on the powdered sugar (or crack) and you have a cookie that will completely wreck you. The Pecan Chewies (GF) are also incredibly rich and satisfying. The Olive Loaf also lived up to the rave reviews. Generously studded with salty olive chunks, it is delicious just on its own. The cookies and bread harden overnight, sooo I guess you'll have to eat everything at once :) LOCATION: It's a little tricky to find. In the plaza thing at 1250 Addison, go around the corner of the brick building (still on the first floor), and you'll see their sign. It's really more of a door than a bakery. Fresh pasta, cut to order at a great price - can't beat that!! The pastas were super fresh. The flavors were very subtle (I tried their porcine in a linguine cut and their basil and garlic in a parpadelle cut). As a matter-of-fact, I think a bit stronger flavor would be even yummier. But, you can't beat the freshness and the overall yumminess of the pasta! 45 seconds for the linguine and 90 seconds for the parpadelle was all it took! They also sell sauces (next time!), olive bread, an assortment of desserts, as well as pizza after 3pm. I tried the almond macaroon and although I'm not a big macaroon person, found it pretty good. Their chocolate cupcake was also pretty good - a dark chocolate that wasn't overly sweet. There is no store front sign so just look for the open door right next to the cafe. I walked by thinking it was just the back part of the cafe next door. Super nice lady offered fantastic service. For these prices - why buy dried pasta ever again? Freshest and greatest selection of pasta you can find in Berkeley, or anywhere around. They have 28 types of fresh egg pasta, 10 flavors of eggless pasta, 13+ kinds of ravioli, 9 sauces, and lots and lots of sweet treats. My favorite of their egg pasta are the squid ink, basil, chestnut, and spinach. But the sweet pea is what I buy most frequently because its only $4/lb and I'm a cheap ass. Haven't tried any sauces but the sample of the slow roasted tomato that they gave me at the farmers market was good. Really sweet and seasoned well. Speaking of the farmers market, its more expensive there. The pasta look like they're sold at the same price as the store, but you only get 12oz, not a whole lb. But I understand they gotta pay for the spot, send a guy out there, and its just more convenient because the storefront is at a really random location in the residential area so its not even like you would ever walk by there. I usually bike there but there are street parkings around. I'm also a fan of their pecan chews, which has no butter and egg whites only! Great for health nuts who are seriously craving a cookie =] Their olive bread is really good too. Has a great texture and rustic feel to it. I've tried a few of their pastas from the farmers market location in JLS. Price range for pastas are anywhere from $4.75 to $7. I believe they sell by the pound only at the farmers market. They're all delicious and organic. Pastas are fresh and oh so delicious. Perfect bites. Servings each is 3-4. Depends on how big your portions are. You could eat it in one day hehe. It's just my husband & I in the household. We tried to cook half of it and save the other half for the next day. Make our money's worth. Cooking time is very fast...either 60 seconds or up to 2 minutes. Depends what type of cut it is. I've tried their garlic cream sauce. So-so. I don't think it's worth it. I like regular store bought alfredo cream sauce to go with these pastas. Or home-made sauce. The olive bread is good on the same day bought. It's not fresh the next day and it gets hardened & stale. I had to pick out the middle bread and eat it that way. Threw away the crust. I've tried the pecan chewie cookie. That was pretty good. Not worth $2.25 though. Next time, I would buy the pastas only. Nothing else. Looking foward to the next farmers market. Can't wait for the next pasta dinner. read more

I pride myself in baking almost all of my own bread, and thanks to the Tartine bread book, most of the time the bread from our home oven competes with the best bread at the market. However, Phoenix has some secret that makes their olive bread tastier than anything I've baked or eaten elsewhere. It's simply the best. One day I'll successfully reverse-engineer it, and perhaps my great baking dream will be realized, but until then I am woefully addicted to their farmer's market stand. read more
