The Palms for the win in Fresno. Was here on a work trip and unfamiliar with the area or the restaurants. The Palms was recommended to us so we figured to try it. Ambiance was pretty good and the food was outstanding. Be careful because the portions were enormous, but for the price it was fantastic. Unfortunately for us, we didn't have a fridge in the rooms so a lot of food was wasted. The service was the only slight knock. They were slow with refills and pulling plates between courses. We also sat around a while after dinner waiting to order dessert. Not a huge deal but it was a drag on the overall experience and what landed them with 4 stars and not 5. Food is so good here. The chicken was super tender and moist. The ribeye was cooked to perfection. My husband loved the twice baked potato. We made a reservation for 5:30 and there was literally no one in there so it made the experience super private and personal. I also ordered the famous baklava cheese cake. It was so good. I was eager to try this place after it was recommended by 2 coworkers who stated it was amazing. Very nice area, walked in and ambiance was nice. We made a reservation a few days ahead so we got seated right away. Someone got us drinks is right away, our server came quickly after and gave us the specials. She took our appetizer and meal orders and was very friendly. We didn't wait but 10 mins and our soup and appetizers were there. We got the Chicken And Wild Mushroom Spring Rolls. They were fabulous! I used to go here quite a bit and recently have been a few times. I've noticed changes since the past years, they have a focus on the good looking picture worthy which I appreciate. They give you a personal feeling, the servers are amazing and kind. The baklava with ice cream is soooooooo good. I'll be back just for that. The butter leaf salad is my favorite, with extra dressing. Short ribs, the fish specials and the sandwiches are great. I like the fried calamari appetizer. For lunch the price point for the amount of food you get it's not too expensive. Dinner is more pricey but a great date night, business parties (they have rooms for parties) and a fun experience on the nights they have live music. Food wise the only thing I didn't like was the pork chop. It was undercooked looking, too thick and weird. Based on other reviews they have a few menu items they should remove or fix. Came here as part of a large group and had our meal coursed throughout the night. I tried the bruschetta, the beet salad, the salmon plate, and a drink. The bruschetta was nothing special and was a little on the bland side. The beet salad had an odd texture because it was shredded but it was also very fresh. The cheese bruschetta that came with it was delicious. The salmon was also a little on the bland side, but it was topped with some spices that I found a bit more on the jarring side. The veggies and mashed potatoes were good though. The pumpkin cheesecake was delicious and topped with a chocolate drizzle. The server was attentive and helpful, especially for our large group. The palms is a Fresno classic I had been wanting to try for some time and kept forgetting about, now that I've gone I don't think I'm dying to go back I felt as though the experience was just ehh. Our bartender/server was so sweet and very attentive, no complaints there. The food was just ehh. I had the salmon. I feel like there's so many more new restaurants giving the older ones some major competition. I appreciate the atmosphere for what it is but do think it could use some updating. If I could give this a more accurate rating, it would be closer to 3 1/2 stars. The staff was great and it was easy to set up this reservation for our group of 13. However, the food didn't hold up to the fine dining standards. We started with drinks and appetizers, which were very good. We did crab cakes (which was a special), calamari and bruschetta. However, when we got to the entrees, that's where it went downhill. Five of our group ordered the filet and two the ribeye. Of the seven, 4 weren't cooked correctly, two under and two severely over. The two family members that asked for medium rare received well done. My stepson ordered chicken and quietly today my wife late last night that his was undercooked and he wasn't feeling very good. I got the boneless pork chops which were cooked correctly and had great flavor, but weren't visually appealing. My mom ordered their special, which was the Petrale sole with shrimp and that was good. We finished it off with the bread pudding and baklava, which were both excellent. As for the beef, our server Sara did notice my brother having an issue with the well done ribeye and offered to fire up another, but because this was my mom's first birthday after my dad's passing, he declined just so the evening could go smoothly. All in all, there were good and bad things, but when you pay over $60 for a steak, you expect them to be cooked correctly. read more

Hats off to our excellent server(I don't want to spell her name coz I might spell it wrong, I'm sorry) but she is super amazing and very accommodating. She got our order correct but the person that brings out the food send my husband a wrong order but as soon as she found out she fixed the situation right away. Our server, Tvin, had amazing recommendations so we took her advice on what to try. We tried some appetizers; Hummus and egg rolls, and both were delicious! I got the pork chop which wasn't even a chop it was like a little roast. It wasn't flavored well at all. The potatoes were bland and almost didn't even taste like real potatoes which is very concerning for a restaurant like this. I told my friend I cook my pork so much better and she agreed immediately. My friends got the sirloin and the chicken and we haven't talked about it yet since we were at an event but they didn't eat much which leads me to believe they weren't that great. Too much was the outcome: too much cooking, too much chicken, and not enough attention to the outcome. I think the prices are fair .,. But I think the overall impression is over the top. My wife ate the tuna and it was very good. The portions were also large, and returning we could easily split that plate and have a sufficiently of food. The flavor was good, but it was disappointing to find imitation crab instead of real crab, especially for a higher-end restaurant. I ordered the filet medium rare and it came out closer to rare. I ate it because I don't mind rare steaks, but it would likely be an issue for others. I did try the Chilean sea bass from another plate, and it was excellent. Every bite was a pleasure for my tastebuds. For my main I got lambchops this was my first time having them, but I hate to say I did not particularly like it. Since this was my first time, I wasn't sure what to expect but I feel the meat was bland and might have been slightly undercooked. My first time at The Palms and I was very impressed, let me explain. Upon entering I was greeted with enthusiasm and it was genuine and the hostess knew the guest list and which party I was with ( very professional) the server was extremely familiar with the menu and the specials for the night and that came into play later on. As the pictures show I chose the bone in ribeye which was cooked the way I like it medium rare but before that was the blue cheese salad that was very tasty. The Pinot was the correct choice for me and pared wonderfully with my selection. The dessert(s) were chosen by the host and the three turned out to be delicious, crème brûlée, blueberry bread pudding (the server's favorite) and baklava that is made with honey YUMMY! The decor was elegant and refreshing, the staff reflected the classic business sense that the restaurant projected and the tables weren't so close together that your personal space wasn't invaded...I like that. I LOVE this place. Wife and I first discovered this restaurant when we first moved to Fresno 6 years ago. We have been coming ever since. The quality of food, service, and ambience are all amazing. Everyone, from the owners Wally and Knar, to the servers (particular favorites to include Cassy, Sarah, and Knar- yep a different Knar), to the Saturday night piano player, go out of their way to make sure you have a wonderful experience. At this point I have essentially tried everything on the menu. Personal favorite is the ribeye. But NY strip, sea bass, short ribs, and pork loin are all top notch. As a special treat, they occasionally have a tomahawk which is not to be missed. Appetizers to include a seafood tower and a beautiful beet salad are spectacular. The wine menu is comprehensive and reasonably priced. Desserts, with a Middle Eastern slant, are well worth the calories. In short, check out The Palms. You won't be disappointed. read more

We had our Christmas ever dinner here - party of 11 with 4 kids. Our reservation was at 5:30 so there weren't too many people there when we arrived which meant the room with our table was nice a quiet. Once people started coming in however, the room was extremely loud with made it difficult to converse with others at our own table. The noise aside, I do have to say I would give this restaurant five stars solely based on the food taste and quality. Everything we had was really delicious. This is actually what actually made me give three stars and nothing less. If I was rating this place on the service alone, I would rate one star. In my opinion, the service was severely lacking for the amount of money one has to dole out for even one dish, let alone 11. We were greeted ok, but once we were seated, it really went downhill. Our waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there and when she was at our table, she would get an order/request from one or two people then disappear for what seemed like forever. She would come back and do the same thing. This happened throughout the night. I assumed she was busy and let it go until I asked her for extra cherries for my son's Shirley Temple - she seemed to have sighed and made a face that I just couldn't let slide. This was the end of it for me. When a table pays upwards of $1,000 for a dinner, you would expect top notch service. Her attitude was totally unacceptable. I read previous reviews after the fact that were similar to my experience which makes me believe the management/owners really don't mind that their waitstaff treat their customers this way. For this reason, I don't think I'll be back. There are many other options in town that do offer a great overall experience that would appreciate your hard earned cash. read more

If you're planning an event I'd be sure to review their policy for using outside vendors for party set up. As the event gets close and you try to arrange a time to have cake and flowers delivered the day of the event, the owner becomes hostile. Giving your vendors a 30 min window before the event starts to drop everything off and access the room. Once the room is available, and you're rushing to get things ready, owner reprimands vendors and makes them feel unwelcome, you're walking on egg shells. I'd not recommend this place for any parties or large gatherings, period!! They think it's the Palace of Versailles and you're expected to decorate as if you're restoring a priceless piece of history. So strange! She will keep your $500 deposit and tell you to hit the road if you don't like it. Event food menu isn't your choice, it's what she decides your party needs and what's easiest for the restaurant that weekend. read more

Went with a larger party, excited for a new and upscale dining experience. However, it was by far, the worst restaurant experience I've had up to date. As stated, we reserved for a large party for a close friend's birthday. No where on their website do they state that large parties are required to have a "Fixed menu." The server informed us when we were settled in and it was truly disappointing, being that their original menu is small. We really wanted to try different options but that was out the window. Next, I ordered a dirty martini extra blue cheese olives. She brings me my drink with regular olives and proceeds to tell me that she will personally go find olives and stuff them with blue cheese (I did not request her to do so) but it was a nice gesture so I said sure that would be nice! Olives were never brought. I do not mind if you are honest and tell me you don't carry them, however....do not offer to do something and not follow through. Left a bad taste in my mouth. I ordered a filet mignon and Caesar salad. My salad never came, had to flag down server. Everyone received their filet mignon and again my steak never came. Server who took my order saw me with no food and proceeded to ask me "did you order?" ........ you took my order, so yes I did order. That's when I knew that my order was not rung in and it was going to be made on the fly. I ordered medium rare, and the steak came out so rare and bloody I had to eat around it. Everyone who received their steaks prior, had perfectly cooked medium rare. $50 for a forgotten steak, cooked incorrectly, 2 pieces of carrots and mediocre mashed potatoes? No thank you. Servers checked in an appropriate amount of times but over all experience made me not want to order anything else. Worst $200 spent. read more

Our first time and we won't go back. It is a nice restaurant, however tonight we ordered appetizers and our main course. We let them know of a food allergy. When they brought out the appetizer we double checked and the server went back to the kitchen and double checked. We started enjoying our food to find out that it indeed had the item I am allergic too. It is a mild allergy with blisters and welts, GI problems. Does not make for a fun evening and ruined the rest of our night after taking Benadryl. They did not take off the item off our bill that contained the food. They did not seem concerned. It's been a while since I've been here. So glad we came today as lunch was the best I've had in a long time. I'm happy that they didn't have 1000 things on the menu and deciding upon something was relatively easy. We ordered the beef kebab with pilaf and vegetables and also the steak mushroom melt sandwich with a green salad. For the starter, we went with the oysters Rockefeller. The meal was served with two tasty hot rolls and butter. The salad that came with my sandwich was generous. Both the amount of meat and mushrooms on the sandwich was perfect. It was nicely seasoned and one of the better renditions in Fresno. The beef kebab was huge. The meat was absolutely top-notch, perfectly seasoned, and even with binoculars you couldn't spot a speck of gristle. .. the bulgar was absolutely delicious and it was nicely accompanied with deliciously prepared fresh vegetables. A very tasty platter with of variety of textures and fiber. The portion was perfect! What stood out is the quality of the meat, just as one might expect. And a lot of other establishments don't even come close in that department. Sometimes it 'looks good' but it's actually poor quality that you want to spit out or pretend you dropped something to spit it into a napkin! lol The quality is the draw here and the flavors were remarkable. The beef kebab and bulgar easily beat any Mediterranean offering and all of Fresno. No other place that I've been to approaches the quality... and that's why we will be returning. The last time I was here they did not have the oysters Rockefeller so we made up for it today. And what a treat! Insanely good and perfectly executed, each element that comprised the dish was exceptional. The service was fine, but I didn't care for our table which was right in the main traffic stream... also getting a simple confirmation on reservations was problematic. They didn't phone back to confirm anything and after three phone calls following up, I finally knew it was booked. I left a message for them to 'simply leave me a message on my voicemail.' But that was too difficult for them. The message that was left asked me to 'call them' AGAIN???! That then resulted in needing to make YET another phone call! Come on! Just LEAVE a message, "Reservation confirmed." Simple, eh?? The 11:00 AM time frame was perfect for eating here. And I enjoyed it enough that I'll be taking more clients here... if you wait till later in the lunch hour, you're looking at a busier restaurant, less service, things moving along a lot more slowly... The restaurant is classy, nicely appointed and laid out. There's a LARGE banquet room and even a baby grand piano for when your 'chopsticks' skills are going soft. It's a nice part of town, upwardly mobile, established and you don't feel the need to be looking around or worrying about your car. Sadly, the music is a bit crass here and completely mismatched to every other element of the restaurant. Should be relaxing classical or jazz. The restaurant itself is stunning and so elegant. We went there to celebrate our 2yr anniversary and were very pleased with the wait time (we had a reservation and we're seated within 15 min). The staff was so friendly although one seemed a bit overly friendly and even winked at my bf in front of me. The food looked amazing and although the flavor was really good, I would say that my filet mignon was not as tender and easy to bite. I like my steaks medium rare but the center seemed almost completely undercooked. The mashed potatoes were so delicious and just melted in my mouth.
