On Grand Central Avenue in the summer is an event in itself, due to the summer vacationers in this small hamlet. This summer appears to be no different, only the majority of people are masked. Surprised as we were, the area and restaurant were quite crowded. The Oven, formerly Lavallette Pizza, relocated over the winter a few blocks north. We wanted a pizza and being in the area, ended up here to our delight. We had Pizza Capriosa, a large consisting of fresh tomatoes, cheese, mushrooms and prosciutto. Excellent. Parking is always tough in the summer. The meals range from $16-$22 and the pizzas range from $13-$22. Their salads appear to be very large judging what the servers carried outside. Heather, our server, is a college student at BU and was very amenable.

Well, I RARELY give "One Star" but The Oven is getting one here. We went here for a quick dinner before going to The Music Man. The Oven is nicer inside then a regular pizzeria. The food was average but our service was below average. The waitress was pleasant but she appeared to be either overworked, new at this job or both. She erroneously ordered a Tossed Salad for me when I asked for the Salad Wedge. She came back afterward & asked me again what I wanted because she didn't think it was anywhere on the menu (it was). My wife's Chicken Caesar salad was missing chicken, and my daughter ordered the simplest thing at a pizzeria (a plain slice) and that came out considerably later than the rest of our food. At the end, I apparently was over-billed ($6.50) for a "Tossed Salad". I only realized it later that night when I began this post. Do I go back and ask for my 6.50+ tax? I don't think I'm going to do that. Advice to customers: Double check your bill.

Friday night enjoying the beach house with family and what a beautiful day. Getting hungry so finding a pizza place on yelp. Every thing close has 3 stars or less so oh well, it is what it is. Ordered from the Oven which had good pictures on the web site. Sorry to say the pictures were the best thing. I know its busy being late June but the pie just not favorable. I ordered a large plain, a large pepperoni-sausage-mushroom pie. The crust on both were burnt and on the thick side. No where near enough cheese and the sauce was just average. I also ordered an antipasto salad with hot peppers. The meat was minimum and the hot peppers smothered the dish. Also ordered was Chicken Francaise which lacked lemon and had a bland taste. Total bill was $70. I must say the staff was very pleasant though. All in all just another pizza place.

Prices outrageous for the quality of food. Margarita pie ( mostly dough) $25. House salad and small bottle of soda $52..

The place is a sh-t show. They have no clue what's going on and I feel they make the prices up as they go. Not what they used to be

The pizza is consistently good. The service is very friendly. This is my go to pizza place in Lavallette.

Really, really bad. Clearly, no pride is taken into making their food or running this place.

But tonight, I did go back in the off season. Not only did they remember my awful wait the last time I was there, she apologized again and gave me some extra breadsticks for the ones she couldn't give me the other time. ------------------------------------------- First time was great and we were in and out with our delicious take out pretty quickly. Tonight was another story. I arrived at 9pm on a Saturday night in the summer. Big mistake! I just wanted a quick meal instead of cooking myself. (I live just a couple blocks away.) I ordered and paid and then I was told it would be about 25 minutes. Ok, longer than expected, but pretty reasonable for a busy restaurant. It actually took 45 minutes to get my food. I practically passed out from hunger while waiting. I got a quick apology and I do sympathize; they were really busy. But then when I checked my order, I noticed I didn't have the breadsticks that came with my order. I asked and was told that they ran out. They ran out of bread in a pizza shop! Just poor communication on top of waiting FOURTY-FIVE minutes for take out. I'll give them another shot in the off-season, but incredibly disappointed.

So, you might be thinking to yourself, what could have possibly riled this guy up so much? Well, as you may have guessed by their name, DJ's sells this abomination they refer to as an "Italian hot dog." Now, on paper it sounds delicious: two dogs, sautéed peppers and onions, fried potatoes like Mom used to make before her accident, served up in a nice warm fluffy roll. Except it's not in a roll. It's in a large, dry, bread pocket. A bread pouch, if you will, similar to what they use to make calzones. In fact, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it was the bread they use for calzones. Wait, that's not how calzones are made at all. The pouch was entirely too big. Every bite was a tiny bit of hot dog then a mouthful of dough. There were hardly any peppers and onions, and you couldn't really apply condiments since it would just fill up the large cavity the ingredients were sitting in. It would have been a bowl of mush if I'd tried. For $15 absolutely not worth it. OH. It was $15 because I got the "combo," which was to come with a drink and fries. While I was waiting for my food, the lady at the register actually TALKED ME OUT OF getting my fries because "the Italian hot dog comes with potatoes in it." I was like, "Yeah, that makes sense." But then later I thought about it more and damn, I ripped myself off. I am so impressionable it's ridiculous. She just totally jedi-mindtricked me into turning something down that I paid for. The last complaint is a bit superficial, but the Italian hot dog itself just looks so freakin' dumb. If people walk by and point and laugh, just know they aren't laughing at you. They're laughing at the culinary atrocity in your hands.
