Our first night on our short weekend getaway and we didn't want anything fancy. Luckily we found Monte's Cafe and some absolutely fantastic food! Started with chips and salsa - made on-site and they also brought us three sauces, also made on-site - a jalapeño sauce, a red sauce and a tomatillo sauce. 100% recommend-all were delicious. We decided to split our meals and ordered a chicken burrito and the shrimp quesadillas. The burrito was very tasty, with what seemed like freshly made refried beans and delicious chicken. A little too much rice for me, I would have preferred less rice and maybe some grilled onions and peppers. The shrimp quesadillas were NOT what we expected. The shell seemed almost flash fried and in addition to the shrimp it had lettuce and melted manchego cheese. It was really, REALLY good. Service was great and we weren't rushed. There were four other tables filled while we were there and three of them were speaking Spanish which made me feel like we chose the right place. Seriously, I felt like the food here was made someone who'd been cooking like this for decades. A very cool little restaurant that I cannot recommend enough! Montes cafe is easily the best Mexican restaurant in the area for my liking. The service is always good. Whether we dine-in or take-out we never have any issues. The restaurant itself is a good size with roughly 12 tables. It always appears to be clean and well kept. Their birria is my favorite. I've had the pizza (for 2), the tacos and the quesadilla, all always delish. My wife typically orders the mushroom quesadilla which are really nice and fresh. Worst tacos I've ever had in my life. So dry, it felt like i was eating a brick struggling to swallow. These tacos should be free. Not to mention the service is super slow. Being from Texas I wasn't sure a place in New Jersey would meet or exceed my expectations but wow. I had the three crispy taco plate $11.00 no beans or rice. I had one chicken and three ground beef. I tried the chicken taco first and the meat was amazing, moist and flavorful, making me regret I only ordered one. Then I tried the ground beef and I was surprised that I was just as happy because the flavor was wonderful. The only thing I didn't really like was the really thick chips but that's just a preference thing. After a long weekend at work so couldn't bring myself to cook tonight and fancied authentic Mexican fare. I ordered the beef nachos and the chorizo tacos so I could have variety and plenty of leftovers. Given that I'm a chipaholic that was my first bite and boy was I impressed. There was just the right amount of queso with beef, lettuce and tomato mixed in. Accompaniments of sour cream, red and green salsa were also included but the nachos didn't need any addition to be perfect for me. The chorizo and potato taco was delicious too, however I was not as hungry as I thought and couldn't peel myself away from the nachos. Value for money you will get a delicious, filling meal here. I ordered this through Uber eats and I believe it was delivered by the restaurant. The gentleman who delivered my meal called to verify he had the right address and had no difficulties with the delivery. Packaging was done carefully with napkins and plastic ware included. If you're looking for solid Mexican food in the Seaside Heights area, then Montes Cafe is for you. It's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall, so don't expect a fancy atmosphere. This is a place for fairly priced Mexican food. The food is cooked to order and comes out hot, so you may have to wait a while before your food comes out. There are definitely standard text-mex favorites, but they also have some authentic dishes, like authentic quesadillas and a wide array of platters. The platters come with a variety of meats and tortillas - think fajitas, but they is way more of a selection then just chicken and onions. Top items for me at the nachos, al pastor tacos, the tortas, and the butterfly fries. We actually love coming here for breakfast on the weekends, because they have eggs and pancakes along with their Mexican dishes. I ordered the chicken milanesa platter and the girl on the phone told me a " couple minutes " which already I thought was weird since ... cooking and all . The second I took a bite out of the chicken I don't know what hood this chicken came from or who his family may be but I didn't like him ... at all. It had a shady taste and I kept going hoping it would get better and unfortunately it didn't happen ... I ate the beans and rice and lettuce which were acceptable .. but as my Mexican husband says " not every Mexican that comes over can cook ".. like seriously stop opening up mediocre Mexican spots and confusing the masses. My husband's flauta dinner was o.k. I ordered shrimp quesadillas -- $17.95. There were two quesadillas. Each quesadilla shell had two shrimp in it. The shrimp were cut in small pieces and filled a quarter of the enormous fried shell. The rest of the filling was a slice of cheese, lettuce and sauce. I added tuna salad at home. Was happy to find a place for my family to eat ....the food was good...the portions BIG....and although they werent overly friendly..at least they werent rude. Good to find a spot that wasnt hamburgers , french fries and beer. Seems thats all people eat around here by the beach...junk food and booze. This was probably one of the best Mexican meals my husband or I have had in a long time. Very authentic Mexican restaurant with a large offering - everyone will be able to find something. The staff were so friendly and really helpful. Many of the staff speak Spanish, with a little English. But that doesn't stop them from trying and really being so welcoming. Had a very lovely time at Montes Cafe, sitting down for one of our first indoor meals since the pandemic. Blanca and her family are kind, the service is fast, and most importantly, the food is legitimately authentic central Mexican food with - dare I say it - really good mole Poblano. My wife and I shared the mole enchiladas and the tacos campesitos. It was like stepping into Mercado la Merced with fresh ingredients, warm fluffy tortillas, a pleasant bustle, and spicy peppers. My family and I ordered take out from Montes and were blown away. We are down in the off season when a lot of restaurants are closed and we were thrilled with what we ordered. The kids menu options were perfect and my husband and I were able to enjoy authentic Mexican dishes we love. I dined in, and walked in the door right after the other table. the waitress took my order first of coffee then the next tables order. somehow their coffee came out first AND three orders of tacos with rice and beans came out before my pancakes and eggs....I waited 40 minutes for my food had to take it to go and was late to work. also, the one waitress looked sick blowed her nose and no one is wearing gloves.
