This location is the first and only location in California as of the date of this review. Very cute little spot. It used to be a boba shop at one point. The inside smells very sweet because they also make fresh mini donuts on site. The Original Rainbow Cone surprised me. Anyone that knows me knows how much I'm not a fan of orange flavored desserts. But in this mixture, it's works very well and I actually enjoyed it. The multiple flavors in one seems like a weird concept but for me the flavors really worked well together. We love this place. We tried their original rainbow cone and their cosmic birthday sliced cones, both in their junior size. If you order regular size, come prepared because they're enormous. Original Rainbow - 5 flavors stacked to create a precarious mountain of ice cream. From the bottom to the top, it was chocolate, strawberry, "palmer house" (which is like cherry + walnuts set in a vanilla-y base), pistachio, and orange sherbet on top. All the flavors play an important role in the composition of this stack, and kinda all balance each other out. It was kinda like spumoni but like if Scooby Doo was raiding the freezer trying to make it. Cosmic Birthday - Layers of their "superman" ice cream in-between birthday cake ice cream. The best way I can think to describe it was like having a slice of funfetti cake in one hand and a bomb pop in another, and you're alternating bites. Sometimes you just want or even NEED ice cream and that is just what happened while we were traveling from San Diego to Los Angeles. We had driven a bit of the coastal highway and my older daughter said "there's this place that looks really interesting and I've been wanting to try it". That is how we ended up at the Original Rainbow Cone. Now, I am not one for gimmicky ice creams. In fact, the more basic and old school the joint is when it comes to ice cream, the happier I am. Full cream, slow churned, made with love and real fresh ingredients. This is definitely something Rainbow cone does properly, and they do have well made ice cream. However, I opted for a chocolate milkshake, as I knew the legit ice cream would make a great treat, especially after my earlier burger from Jack in the Box. One thing I could agree on with my wife was that the actual original rainbow cone itself was delicious. The layering of different colorful flavors actually work together perfectly. The other layered choices didn't really seem all that enticing and are obviously geared at the theme they have going of the stacked slabs of different flavors of ice cream. This feeds into the gimmick, which really isn't for me, but again, the quality is there so it was still a tasty experience in my book. The welcoming staff was also a highlight as none of us had any experience in what the cones were or what we wanted to order or even where to start. They were helpful, fun, and even played along with my patented ridiculousness and even led us to the recommendation to try the original rainbow that I ended up enjoying thoroughly. I am under the impression that this is a small chain, but definitely not nationwide. If I remember correctly, it began in Chicago and has expanded to many locations, and the vibe is definitely a big part of that. If you see one nearby definitely give it a shot! I went to a food fest and saw their booth. They were giving out donuts and ice cream. My girlfriend tried the mini donuts and I had the ice cream. I've been HOOKED ever since They handed me a little menu giving their whole backstory and the list of things they offer. I had to go in and visit their ice cream shop because I saw they serve my FAVORITE childhood flavor, Superman ice cream. When I pulled up I noticed there was a lot of parking. It's in a private parking lot but they share it with a couple other places. The shop is cute. It has their story everywhere and old photos, Barbie pink stools to sit on (also have I think one or two tables. The tables were limited vs the stools lined up against the wall with a counter) they also have a big ice cream statue Caroline was absolutely so sweet. She did a great job at asking every customer that came in if it was their first time, if they had any questions, if they want a sample. I told her it was my first time here and she asked how I found out about the place. So Caroline was on point! 10/10 They don't just have scoops of ice cream, no no no, they offer slices of ice cream cake, floats, decked out sundaes and more (again, the mini donuts, too! Which, you can add to your ice cream) they even have custom ice cream cookie sandwiches. You could even get them in a pack to take home I ended up ordering my ice cream and then getting a slice of their orange vanilla cake. It was delicious I love the combo of orange and vanilla. Plus the cake part wasn't dry. They have a variety of ice cream flavors which you can get in a cup or cone, as well as a variety of specialty sundaes. The young woman who helped me at the counter was delightfully friendly and helped me figure out what to get. I decided to get two flavors in a cup - Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Big Muddy (dark chocolate with small blobs of caramel throughout). I asked for some gooey caramel topping too. There are outdoor tables to sit at as well as some indoor seating and a counter. I sat at the counter and enjoyed the large scoops. The chocolate chip cookie dough was okay. I've definitely had better. But the Big Muddy was excellent - I really liked the dark chocolate flavor and the sweet caramel surprises in every bite. They also sell mini donuts here. I probably wouldn't have gotten any but Les S. mentions in his review that he thought the donuts were better than the ice cream. I agree completely! They have several flavor options and make them to order. I decided to get "classic glazed" - little plain donuts with a slightly sweet glaze poured over them. They sell them in boxes of half a dozen (which to them means 7) and they were so fresh and delicous. I ate one donut while halfway through my ice cream and immediately pushed my ice cream aside to wolf down those donuts! For me to push ice cream aside for anything is unheard of...that's how good their donuts are. Its signature item is its Rainbow Cone which has five sliced ice cream flavors stacked on top of one another (chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House, pistachio, orange sherbet). Most of its ice cream flavors are pretty standard, but decent to good. What I mainly come here is for its freshly made mini donuts. When I say fresh, they are made to order, not made the same day or within the last hour. You will need to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for the staff to make donuts, but they are totally worth it. Just having them fresh makes such a big difference. I even ate some the day after and they still tasted pretty fresh. This location has switched hands several times. I like peanut butter but it's not my favorite in ice cream but their peanut butter swirl is delicious and smooth. Definitely would get that again next time and try more flavors. I love that the cone came with an ice cream cone sleeve so none of the ice cream melted onto your hand. I decided to also get a half dozen mini-donuts since it was my first time. I ate a few but saved them for later. Since they were made fresh, they tasted amazing and melt in your mouth. I'd say it's like those mini donuts you get in a pack at the gas station, but super fresh and literally melt in your mouth when it's freshly made and hot. I ate the rest of them the next day with coffee and it still tasted fresh and soft. The shop itself is a girly dream! We tried a couple of things, including a double scoop of huckleberry and cookie dough, and a rainbow quart. The texture of the huckleberry and cookie dough was nice and creamy, and the huckleberry was a pretty interesting flavor. The rainbow flavors (not judging the texture because the quart isn't meant to be eaten right away) honestly didn't blow me away. It's an interesting mix, but the individual flavors themselves aren't necessarily the best you can find here in OC. The chocolate, strawberry, orange, and pistachio... eh. It kinda tasted like grocery store ice cream flavor-wise. But the price was pretty good, and the quart comes with two cones which was nice (extra charge for a waffle cone).
