Stopped by The Grind for a quick visit and can definitely see why it's such a local hot spot -- there was steady foot traffic the whole time we were there! Despite being busy, the wait for food wasn't bad at all, and the café had plenty of staff who were all very friendly and welcoming. We ordered their famous carrot cake, a hot chocolate, coffee, and two everything bagels with cream cheese, which came to $29.80 -- pretty reasonable for a café stop. The food itself was good and satisfying, even if not something I'd necessarily write home about. I'd be really interested in coming back to try their sandwiches next time when we have more time to stay. The atmosphere is cozy and a little cluttered in a charming way, with lots of things to look at that give the space personality. There were no prices on the menu or on the website. Website advertises fresh home baked goods, but my $11 breakfast bagel was made from a bag of great value bagels that the employee came out of the back kitchen with. The egg was really dry. Kind of like it was frozen and then microwaved. My husband got a bagel with cream cheese for $5.75. It was mediocre at best. Would have rather gone to Tim Hortons. The pumpkin muffin was good but overall not happy with the misleading advertising and overpriced low quality food. read more

Passed by here on my way to Jasper. Didn't need food but I got a large Chai tea latte and boyfriend got the large Butterbeer Steamer. Chai latte was just 2 shots of Tazo chai latte mix with milk. The chai taste wasn't strong enough for me. The Butterbeer steamer was Super sweet and mostly tasted like butterscotch. $11.24 for 2 large drinks. Took the drinks to go but the atmosphere is really nice but was 90% full at 1PM on a Friday. Overall wouldn't order the same drinks but desserts and sandwiches look amazing! read more

Another nice find of an independent café in a small community. This café is located just off the Yellowhead Highway. In fact you can see the highway from the café's windows. If you have a trailer or other large vehicle you might find a place to park but not on a side street. Hinton has no actual main street or downtown but rather is designed like a bunch of strip malls put together. It reminds me of South Edmonton Common. The café is surprisingly large inside with lots of tables. You order at the counter. They have a lot of sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads and pastries so there is probably something for everyone's tastes. I had the daily special wrap. It was turkey with lettuce and lots of vegetables. The sauce really made it delicious. The bonus was that it makes for a healthy meal. The only thing that I didn't like is that it was wrapped rather loosely so it can be a bit messy. My coffee was good (it could have been warmer) and it came with a refill. My wife had a scone and a salad. I had a taste of the scone and it was delicious. That alone makes this café worth a visit. Her salad was a bit plain but it was as described. It would benefit from some more veggies like my wrap had. Overall the food was quite good. I didn't see the cafés name on my phones WiFi list so I'm not sure if they have WiFi but, to be fair, I didn't ask. I enjoyed my lunch and would definitely come back. Amazing atmosphere and coffee shop! The food is good, the lattes are great, and the ambiance is relaxing. There's local art to admire or buy on the walls, and the owners are extremely kind. If you're just stopping through town, try to do it on a Wednesday or Saturday so you can grab one of their amazing cinnamon buns! The place is cute. Coffee is fine. I didn't have the sandwich other reviewers are raving about. I ordered scrambled eggs instead. Most horrible eggs I ever had. If The Old Grind moved to Toronto I would abandon Starbucks for them, and that's saying something for an addict like me. During our stay in Hinton, once we discovered this place we went back every day afterwards. Their latte is perfectly done, you don't need to add any sugar/honey. The beans have a nutty warm flavour, a little like the sbux blend but smoother. My boyfriend tried the medium roast brewed coffee and said it was good too. Their baked goods are simply amazing. They have homemade granola bars that are the best I've had in my life. They're a mix of healthy and decadent, with sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, oats, pecans, cranberries, and chocolate chips. I have no idea what they've used as a binder, but it's delicious and reminds me a bit of agave nectar, making the bar pretty stiff and chewy. The raspberry white chocolate scones are also fantastic. They're not too sweet, but have a vanilla batter which gets a little crispy on the outside and is fluffy on the inside. They don't have that baking-soda-y taste commercial scones usually have. Definitely something I'm going to try and recreate when I get home. We tried the breakfast bun one morning and it too was delicious. It's like an omelette sandwich. It's a fluffy bun about the size of a fat English muffin, toasted, with egg, chopped vegetables and either bacon or ham. I think I would have preferred a bun that wasn't so soft as it tended to fall apart as you took bites of the sandwich. My boyfriend also tried the cheese scone and said it was delicious. Won't be back! Ordered two soups, chicken cheddar broccoli chowder, tasted like clam chowder. No real cheese. It was flavoring No broccoli . The other was good a broccoli soup. Order a Brie and beet salad. It was good but expensive for what I got. They forgot our soups that was so come with a bun,came withstand slice of bread, we had to ask. Our bill was 25$we had no drinks. Tasted like one jags soups, not even hit,It was not busy. Found the staff rude, no smiles. Even the owner/manager looked grumpy, she heard us talking about our experience but was to "busy" to stop and ask. Saw a trip advisor rating said it was good. Took the kids and we tried as much as we could. Denver Sandwich-- Best one, I ever had. The Kobe salad-- Awesome!! Yogurt Parfait-- Awesome Breakfast Wrap-- Filling and awesome. And if you leave Hinton without having a Golden Fog, you're a fool. We are stuffed, and happy. Cost $44.84-- We ate at Smitty's yesterday over $75 but in fairness to them, the two hairs we found in our food were free. read more

If you are looking for a hearty breakfast, this is not the place to go. We ordered the omelette, along with 2 pieces of toast (which had to be ordered separately, as it comes with 3 thin tomato slices), and were very disappointed. The "omelette" was an over-microwaved scrambled egg with limited toppings and a bit of cheese on top. My dad, who has few teeth, had difficulty chewing the egg (with no additions other than the cheese put on top). In his words, "That omelette was like trying to chew shoe leather.". The staff were pleasant, the display of local art is lovely and the baked goods look decent, but go elsewhere if you are needing a good, hearty, home-cooked quality breakfast. read more

The Grind is actually pretty quaint. The service is decent, the gift shop (though pricey) was adorable, and the food was ok. I didn't like the soup I had but the meals my family had were pretty good. I ended up going back for their ornaments. It's worth a visit if you're passing through the town. read more

Stopped in for a good cup of dark roast and was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming atmosphere. Baked goods included a gluten free peanut butter cookie! Also bought their famous homemade granola bar. We enjoyed it later that day on a hike in Jasper. Looks like they have great salads for lunch as well. read more
