My husband booked a table for two here. It was actually my idea, seeing it as one of the restaurants in the neighbourhood we've not been yet. Also, I was a little dubious about the mixed Yelp reviews it's had over the last few years. I thought I'd be a fairy Yelp mother for the night and celebrate Valentine's day with my husband at the same time. We were welcomed by friendly staff. A bit sad we were ushered to our seats sandwiched in between a big group and a loud couple. Nevermind, that didn't dampen our experience as I was really looking forward to some good food. I had a bottle of Peroni and Mark had a bottle of IPA. We both ordered steak and ribs with chips. I like my steak well done and Mark like his medium rare. Both came in good time. However, I soon found out my steak was still mooing and Mark's was well done so had to switch plates when he's already smothered the steak with damn pepper sauce! I dare not said anything and just scraped it off. I had garlic butter with my steak and it was really nice. The rack of ribs were delicious. The meal really busted my belly and I was left impressed. My husband's input is he was impressed with the speedy bill upon request. It's nice to finish off our drinks in our own time and not spending much time making eye contact with waiting staff for the bill. I'd come back on a special occassion definitely. read more

When my friends and I had planned on going to Old Bank, we were rather looking forward to it. We had decided to go on a Monday so that we could reap the benefits of the all-you-can-eat ribs. I must say, we were all rather disappointed at the quality of the food. The first rack of ribs that we all ordered was alright, but as the racks progressed, the quality became worse. I'm not quite sure how this happened, because The Old Bank used to be quite a reputable establishment that offered high quality food and service. This is one of the best restaurants in Kemptown, and there are always good offers going. As with most of the other restaurants in teh village, it is independently owned and run. Tuesday is all you can eat ribs, and they really mean all you can eat! It isnt buffet, they bring your more plates freshly cooked right to your table. You can also bring your own wine, with no corkage fees on certain weekdays! The home made ice cream is absolutely delicious! There is often live music, although it is very loud, so I recommend coming for dinner before they start and just having drinks while they play. They also offer a loyalty card, and you get a free dinner after a certain amount of stamps. This may make it sound tacky, but it really isnt... it is a very nice restaurant... well decorated and has a great atmosphere. It is also very good value! read more

Obviously, being a vegetarian most people would assume I wouldn't want to come to a steakhouse. But, alas, my boyfriend doesn't share the same opinion on eating animals as myself so I therefore frequent restaurants such as these from time to time. The vegetarian options are good. Standard burger (or wrap) and chips or salad. Service is slow and atmosphere is pleasant (minus all the racks of ribs - yikes!). Nothing to write home about (in my opinion). Side note: People sure do love all-you-can-eat ribs. And it would probably get a 4/5 from all of my meat-eating friends. read more

Perfectly serviceable steakhouse - not a particularly complex menu-think steak or ribs or chicken or a combo. Seemingly very popular , with no free tables early on a Saturday evening. A rather uninspired wine list, but the steaks our party had were all deemed excellent, while ribs were merely "good". Heard great things about this place but the quality failed to materialise today. I'm love chicken wings. You could say I'm a bit of a wing-nut. With this in mind I had to order a pound of wings to start - they came out and I think their scales must have been broken as there was nowhere as many as this. The wings were obviously pre packaged, probably from brake brothers or a similar frozen wholesaler. Most of the bones inside the wings were snapped which meant splinters of bones whilst we were eating them. They were served with a blue cheese sauce - this was pretty good. Main course - everything is overpriced We both went for a rib combo - me with more chicken wings and my wingman (excuse the pun) went for prawns with his. The ribs came out and looked pretty good however cold ribs are not what we ordered. They took them back and heated them up but unfortunately you only really get one try at delivering quality and although the second attempt was hot we were a bit un-enamoured by this time. Another thing - £4.95 for a 440ml can of Guinness? Have a word! This is daylight robbery! £7.50 for a double gin and tonic? We weren't at a festival!!!! The waiter was good though - probably the best part of the experience. If you want ribs/steaks/burger go elsewhere. There are much much better options out there. read more

I have been to both branches of this restaurant and although the ambiance and deco are great the service was questionable and more importantly seeing that it was a steak house they really didn't seem to get the steak the way i like it which is medium! not something you would think is difficult to get right in a joint like this! My friend enjoyed his burger although i have not tried it so i can not really give my personal feedback on it. I would go here again as Brighton does not seem to have very many decent priced good steak houses but i wouldn't be running back here any time soon. read more

There's two things you can guarantee here, the first is, great food, the second is, you'll never be given the earlybird menu. I don't always eat from that menu but as I don't eat late and my favourites are hot wings and ribs then I may as well take advantage of the earlybird menu if I'm in there while it's available. I've eaten here in excess of 20 times over the last 3 years and just once was I given that menu, in fact it was the very first time I ate here in 2011. So, what is he point of having an earlybird menu which is clearly advertised on their website if it's not offered, this obviously is a managerial decision not to offer it, but only when it's asked for. I decided to try a meal here as I have been driving or walking past this place countless times in the past few years. Menu is simple and they are aiming to deliver a good selection of steaks, burgers and some other dishes. As a started I had their Louisiana Chilli Wings and they were cooked to ones liking. For my main I had a steak as one would and ordered some sides and greens. Steak was cooked to perfection, I wanted Rare to Medium, usually at a regular restaurant expect Medium to Done as not many people realise how quickly the steak can be over cooked. Let's not get distracted, the steak was cooked as I asked, once i cut into it, i could see that it was a prime cut and not an end of a joint, which indicated that taste should be as good as it looked. It was one mean steak and I thoroughly did enjoy it! I would like to go back to try their burger some point soon! Thanks! read more

After wanting to visit The Old Bank for a while, I was delighted to be invited to another Brighton Qype event to sample the wine list and menu. Being a BIG fan of a good steak (and good wine, of course) I've been to a lot of steak houses mainly chain-style ones which try hard to be faux-American and never quite beat a steak from a good butcher which I've cooked myself. This place is (thankfully) something completely different and in a class of it's own. I was the first one to arrive at the event (I have an awful habit of turning up to things stupidly early) and was greeted by Helen, the owner, and Jonathan, the general manager. It was lovely to chat to them a bit about the place first, which despite only being open for a couple of months already has the fantastic homely atmosphere of a well-established restaurant. So, onto the food and wine. We started with a Prosecco which was wonderfully light, easy to drink and an absolute bargain at £19.75 for a great bottle of bubbles. The next wine we had was a Muscat a gorgeous, sweet dessert wine priced at £16.50 for 50cl accompanied by a chicken liver pate (on the menu at £4.50) which complemented it perfectly. Next came a Chardonnay blend accompanied by warm goats cheese (£3.95 on the menu) - even though I'm not normally a lover of Chardonnay, this wine was actually really nice and very decently priced at £13.95. Then it was onto the reds and the meat dishes. The next wine we sampled was a Riesling supplied by local wine merchant Henry Butler priced at £24.95, this was at the top end of the wine list and it was easy to see why. It went fantastically with the chicken wings (from £3.95 a portion) which come in either 'hot' or 'not'. Because I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to spice, I went for 'not'. I've heard great things about The Old Bank's ribs and I wasn't disappointed - they are blimmin' fantastic, especially when accompanied by another of Butler's fantastic wines a beautiful Malbec priced at £22.50. But they saved the best until last the steak. Jonathon bought out a medium-rare 28oz rib eye steak on a platter (which is ALL yours for £29.95) and I'm not ashamed to say I could probably have eaten the entire thing. With the steak we had a gorgeous rich, full-bodied Shiraz priced at £20.25. Perfect. After such enticing tasters of the menu I had to order something I went for the minute steak which is served with chips, jacket or a salad for £6.95. Keen to sample more wine, a few of us sampled their house Malbec which (although not as good as the one from Butler's Wine Cellar) is fantastic value for £11.95. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the evening great food, great wine and a great atmosphere. I'm very much looking forward to going back there and tackling one of those 28oz steaks. Though not really a steak person, I do like a good burger, and don't we get them here. I was a little reticent about going here with my son but now, very glad I did. Very impressed with great selection of starters availableespecially the Pan-fried squid..followed by the homemade 6oz burger. Well worth the visit. Youv'e gotta try it!! read more

I attended an event at this venue which was announced as being for 'ten of the finest Qypers'. What I can say is that those Qypers were in fact lead to one of the finest venues. We received an introduction explaining where some of the obviously fabulous wines are sourced that this house has to offer. As I am probably the least knowledgeable of all attendees in this area, I will leave reviewing the wines to somebody else. I can say however that despite not being a wine lover (having had my last glass prior to this event about two years ago) I was very impressed by the desert wine which was offered after the Prosecco and which was accompanied by some very mouthwatering chicken liver paté. I had never heard of desert wine (or if I had, I had probably presumed it would be very similar to usual white wines) but I was very pleasantly surprised. After that I tried one more wine which was said to be from an area well-known for the longevity of its inhabitants and which was obviously way above the average wine you can buy from your off-license. However as the Riesling was served after that, I had to pass in order to preserve my sanity, being someone who very rarely drinks alcohol. Others were less inhibited and it came to my attention that all wines which were offered were not only of fantastic quality, but also priced well below what you would usually expect. With the next wine, some bread with goats cheese was offered. I love goats cheese, but can't understand why this one tasted so much better than the one I buy in the supermarket and then place under the grill. Maybe it was better quality, or maybe it was just the ambiente which made it taste far superior to anything which I am capable of cooking at home. As we were then served two types of chicken wings (one very hot, and one less spicy), my taste buds couldn't believe the treat they were in for. Especially the hot wings were something to die for. I simply couldn't believe how good they tasted. Maybe someone had secretly spiked my drink with drugs? I can honestly say that I don't usually enjoy food that much! Next in line were the spare ribs. Not my area of expertise with shame I admit that to me one set of spare ribs tastes like the other, so there probably will another reviewer who can say more on this subject (although judging from previous reviews it seems that they are very good). The last item which was presented to us were slices of rib eye steak. I have very little doubt that this was the tastiest and juiciest steak which I have ever tasted, and another excellent reason to return in the future. Unlike at the previous Qype event where I had the impression I was being served by a game show host (which very much subtracted from his credibililty) the manager Jonathan was not only very friendly and helpful when bombarded with questions, but also appeared as a very genuine and down-to-earth person. The same applies for the owner Helen who initially met my request with slight incredulity as I asked to take the rib bones home with me for my dog (it seems it is something they don't often get asked!), but who after me confirming that I was being serious didn't hesitate to grant me my wish. The only thing which placed a slight blemish on the evening was the fact that I was being referred to by the manager as 'this gentleman' as the waiter asked who had ordered the cranberry juice. He had previously stated that he had served people from all walks of life in the past, but this obviously hadn't included a large amount of transgender people. Let's hope this changes, as I can't imagine anyone leaving this venue without raving about it. That is why I will forgive him his slight faux-pas (especially as he was honest enough to admit during his introduction that everyone sometimes makes mistakes). After we had been presented the aforementioned foods and various wines, I still felt a little peckish, so I decided to order a side dish. This gave me the chance to glance at the menu, and it was surprising to see what an extremely good value for money the Old Bank has to offer. I would have expected a far higher price tag from an establishment where both the quality of the food and the service are at the top end of what you could possibly expect. I went to a food & wine tasting evening, discovered by chance via twitter, and enjoyed every minute - what a great way to try new places, and meet new folks at the same time- in real life too, not just on cyber space! Being told about the the different wines we tried with each dish was very helpful, as muggings here doesnt usually venture past the cheap and cheerful own brand stuff.. If I can remember, and in no particular order, here's what we tried- Chicken Liver pate, on ciabatta. a nice smooth and crunch combination. grilled goats cheese. quite savoury, earthy. a big step up from cheddar! Pork Ribs- very tender, and moreish. absolutely lovely! Chcken Wings (BE WARNED- the 'hot' wings are exactly that - VERY hot, but succulent (There is a 'not hot' alternative, too...) Rib-eye steak. I normally have steaks well done, though medium-rare suited this well. I just had a nibble, but main courses can be 8 oz, or a 28- oz monster! ideal for sharing. I can't remember all the wine tasters, but my fave ones were Presecco, a light sparkly aperitif, and Muscat- like honey in a glass! The place looked busy for mid-week, which can only be a good thing? Hidden away between kemp town village and st james street, is a very nicely designed restaurant, perhaps romantic so perfect for a meat loving partner! The ribs were highlight of the visit.. I am not a wine person, but they seemed to match the wines to the meat dishes very well.. I ate here with my husband on a recent trip to Brighton. The restaurant itself is bright and airy with a nice ambience, service was good and the staff are friendly. The food was good, I had a fillet steak which was juicy and tender while my husband opted for the ribs and sirloin combo which he thoroughly enjoyed. Rather tasty and good value, when you ask for Rare it is. Not the best steak in the world and really slow waiters. However the buffalo wings are rather nice. Was rather quite when we were in on a sunday night and the piano player was very loud which didn't help. All in all pretty good though. read more

Now with two branches in the city, this Old Bank in Brighton and a new Hove Bank near Palmeira Square, these places are fast getting a reputation for being the best ribs and steak joint in the city. I love the half rack with bbq sauce. Great and plentiful sides such as spuds and fries make for a lovely feed American-style. All that said. It IS pricey in here. So do go on one for their deals nights. You'll see coupons in the paper or go on Combo night when it's all you can eat on ribs. read more

Total nightmare meal from start to finish. One of our kids ordered scampi. 30 minutes later (!) told had none. So ordered burger. None of them either.. Ok, so my food comes and I ordered steak as it was a steak house. Our friend ordered same but mine was covered in a sauce. His sauce was in a side pot. I can't stand sauce on a good steak! So I ask the manager, how come I have sauce on mine? He just whipped it away and said he'd order another. No apology. This was a nightmare cos my food ended up coming after everyone else had finished theirs. And the butter from my jacket potato turned to liquid where it had been sitting on a hot stand. Meanwhile my wife was not happy, the coleslaw came in the world's smallest pot, I mean TINY teeny portion. We ordered dessert for the kids. 20 minutes later - no vanilla ice cream. Ok so we re-order again. It comes in a egg cup. I am not joking. An EGG cup of ice cream... The bill came which was wrong in 3 places, overcharged. I was also charged for my steak which I thought was wrong but I just left it. I did ask to have the 'optional' service charge removed though. Still no apology even at that point. Shambles. This place is really friendly and welcoming. Friend had a pram with her and they went out of their way to accommodate space next to the tablethe lovely manager even gave the baby a loyalty card with 1st stamp as she was so newborn! Good atmosphere can get busy so book ahead. Recommend the hot wings, ribs and burgers. They also do take out (just phone and collect half hour later). read more

ate at Hove old Bank 4th April. Realise you just opened and are still getting it together, but the deficiencies were too significant. Service was friendly but slow. Specifically came in to have a burger, which sounded very tempting (among other things, described as being served with onion rings), as I specifically wanted to avoid potatoes and your side dishes sounds great I was dying for the French beans. Told on ordering that you don't do the sides any more (what after only 10 days?) and that you only did potato sides. ordered medium rare, but there was no pink. Room temperature, which had only barely melted the pricey cheese and topped with an ice cold slice of tomato, so each bite felt like an ice cube was lodged in the burger. But the icing was that I had picked up the new Source magazine to read during my meal and was subjected to the best burger in Brighton article with 10 finalists that all sounded better and were all at least £3 cheaper, too. read more
