Good food but not worth the price point.
    Kev O.

Good food, but not worth the price. 130 GBP for 2 people for some steak, potatoes and pasta just wasn't cutting it. We got prime rib and a bunch of sides, but it just didn't justify the price. The salad was just lettuce and a few shaved pieces of Parmesan. The potato dishes were salt bombs. If I'm gonna go to a restaurant for Mac and cheese, it shouldn't look like it came from a Kraft box. Don't get me wrong. The food was delicious. The ambiance was great. The service was good as well. It just felt like the price point didn't match the hype and the food. I'd certainly spend that much at a steakhouse, but it should be better than that.

    Lunch/Pre-theater Set Menu
    Sara D.

This review is only regarding the 3 course set menu for lunch/pre-theater. Short Story: Not very good, wouldn't come again, the food is very average for a higher than average price. -------------------------------------------------------------- (I tried food from my friend's plates, so I know how some of the other plates were) FOOD: Mackerel Starter: 3/5, It was very small, but the mackerel was cooked well and wasn't dry at all. The sauce next to it I wasn't a fan of considering how hard it was, but it was fine because I didn't think it needed sauce. Overall, decent plate but not too exciting. Salt Beef Starter: 4/5, This was actually my favorite of all of the plates. They gave a good amount of beef and it had nice flavoring to it. The problem was the beef was a bit too chewy, it didn't tear off nicely. Minute Steak: 2/5, It's essentially the type of flat meat you get from mexican fast foods. It was very dry and there was a thick slab of fat attached to it. Overall, not a good dish, definitely don't recommend. The fries next to it were decent, but I though they were too thick and also very dry. Sea Trout: 3/5, This was the size of a starter but it tasted fine. The potatoes underneath it were very bad and they felt undercooked. The fish tasted plain, like you expect fish to taste, but I had put two bites in my mouth before it was over. Cheese Plate: 2/5, The cheese options were not very high quality, albeit the fact they gave you 3 options. Having to pay 3 pounds extra made it not worth it. The bread given with it was stale, but the jam was pretty tasty. Sorbet Selection: 1/5, Overall just awful. They served you ice, not ice cream, and the flavors were either very bitter or there was no flavor at all. Definitely don't get this choice. -------------------------------------------------------------- PRICE: Set Menu: 17.5 Pounds Cheese Plate: 3 Pounds Not too expensive for set menu, but not worth it. -------------------------------------------------------------- SERVICE: 4/5, The food came quickly and the server was very nice. Nothing spectacular, but definitely no complaints. The one thing that happened though was the waitress dropped the entire glass and it shattered. She was nice about cleaning it up but there was still some shards left over. -------------------------------------------------------------- AMBIANCE: 5/5, It definitely has the nice restaurant vibe, not ridiculously impressive, but good for a nicer date. It could also be done casually however though if that's what you're looking for. -------------------------------------------------------------- OVERALL: I would not recommend coming here for the set menu, but I've heard better things about A La Carte.

    Surf n turf

A great little place tucked away off the main party street of Brighton. If you like your meat or seafood then this is a place for you. Specialising in steak, they offer loads. Sirloin the cheapest cut to porterhouse the top end of the scale. It's all cooked in a special BBQ oven, so the taste is brilliant. I went for the surf n turf. Sirloin steak with half a lobster. Only criticism I have is that you have to pay extra for the sides. At the price you pay for the meat, throwing in a side would be nice. Having said that the beef dripping chips as a side are some of the best chips I've ever had. Steak cooked to my liking and the lobster brilliant. There's a wide selection of drinks available from beer to wine to cocktails. Sunday Roasts are great here too. Friendly service, offer lots of help when choosing what to eat. Lots if specials available too

Dessert at coal shed. Wish I'd just had 5 of these!

Having read lots of reviews about this place, I wanted to see what the hype was. We had a couple of friends down and wanted to take them somewhere nice. We ordered 2 of the Porter house steaks, at 700g each and at £8 for 100g it was pretty pricey but thought it must be worth it. Our waiter was very lovely and friendly and helped us pick a wine to go with dinner. But, we had to order some sides to go with the meal, which I think is a bit off, think you should get at least one side to go with a steak at that price. We ordered chips, mushrooms, Mac n cheese and spinach. The steaks arrived and we tucked it, I can't say I was impressed. The side dishes were tiny, I think there were 10 chips in the pot so we had to get another one. The steaks were ok, bit crispy on the outside in places, and the peppercorn sauce was too runny and not peppery at all. Had a banana popcorn dessert which was lovely, but I think I got about 3 bits of banana and 3 bits of popcorn. Ended up paying £240 altogether including a tip, and the tip was just for the waiters service, not for the food. Won't be going back I'm afraid.

Best steak I've had in the UK (so far). Great service and friendly staff although quite pricey, The Coal Shed is perfect for a nice and chilled evening with amazing food. I had a rare rib-eye steak with a nice parmesan and lettuce salad accompanied by a nice Chianti. Perfect evening!

A fun place for families. Food was delicious. My husband had the Steak & Fries I had the caramelized onion Burger, which I believe the cook brought right out to us. The fries were nice and hot. The steak was cooked perfectly my burger could have been cooked a bit longer to prevent so much of the meat juices from dripping. The waitstaff could be more inviting when you come into the restaurant. The first attempt to eat here the waitress apologized and said it would be a 40 minute wait as a trove of people arrived between 5 - 5:30 pm when we arrived. We told her we'd come back another time. Two days later we arrived around 4:30 ish, and the young lady from way behind the counter, without saying hello or welcome, pointed us to a table. Our assigned waitress was pleasant but we had to flag her down twice for more beverages, it wasn't really busy yet and three wait staff were talking amongst each other. In any case if you don't mind this type behavior this place will suit you, but if you're a large group it may be somewhat challenging to be waited on with a professional attitude. We stayed a week in lovely Brighton and the restaurant was across the street but we didn't bother trying this place for a third time.

This made me happy for the people at the shop, who will now surely have a huge surge in business, and it also made me happy for all the students who can now enjoy a kebab after coming out of a club. AA Charcoal grill is not the best Kebab place in Brighton, but it's O.K. The meat is alright, but it doesn't have a really juicy and fresh taste to it, which Flame on the London Road does, but by no means is a Kebab here bad. I mean I bought many kebabs here last year when I lived pretty much right next to it, and I went back. My advice would be to go for a mixed Kebab, of Chicken and Lamb, which will set you back about £5.80 and cram it full of all the salads, as well as extra jalapenos, which is sure to not leave you hungry.

I soon grew impatient though, and ran most of the way there, picking up a couple of other late night stragglers who also said they were headed to the Holy Grail that is AA. Invigorated further, I quickened my step and left them whooping over my shoulder. Bursting through the door, my eyes whipped up to the price board, past the kebabs and to the burgers, and down to the mushroom and cheese burger which sounded just original enough to warrant the £3 I whipped out for it. As it landed on the grill and I dropped my change into my pockets, I lowered my gaze and saw that AA does something a little special with its kebabs... Anyone familiar with souvlaki will know what I'm talking about... Basically, rather than having a hunk of meat rotating over a heat and having chunks lopped off of it every once in a while, fresh meat, peppers, onions and the like are skewered on a metal... er... skewer and cooked over a charcoal grill. The results, are sublime... And although I resisted the urge to buy one to accompany my burger, it was only because I'd have had to find a cash point first. Next time I'm out late at night and on the prowl for munch, this'll be my port of call, and if it lives up to my expectations, a 5th* will be on the cards....

I'm not quite sure how this happened, because The Old Bank used to be quite a reputable establishment that offered high quality food and service. Also, I was a little dubious about the mixed Yelp reviews it's had over the last few years. I thought I'd be a fairy Yelp mother for the night and celebrate Valentine's day with my husband at the same time. We were welcomed by friendly staff. A bit sad we were ushered to our seats sandwiched in between a big group and a loud couple. Nevermind, that didn't dampen our experience as I was really looking forward to some good food. I had a bottle of Peroni and Mark had a bottle of IPA. We both ordered steak and ribs with chips. I like my steak well done and Mark like his medium rare. Both came in good time. However, I soon found out my steak was still mooing and Mark's was well done so had to switch plates when he's already smothered the steak with damn pepper sauce! I dare not said anything and just scraped it off. I had garlic butter with my steak and it was really nice. The rack of ribs were delicious. The meal really busted my belly and I was left impressed. My husband's input is he was impressed with the speedy bill upon request. It's nice to finish off our drinks in our own time and not spending much time making eye contact with waiting staff for the bill. I'd come back on a special occassion definitely.
