The House is traditional high-quality British dining, with a Mediterranean twist thrown in. While not necessarily the most interesting meal, nor the most value-for-money dining experience, the location is absolutely exceptional, and well worth the price in the summer months.
I should start by saying that I have never been inside The House itself. It simply hasn't appealed to me: some friends complain it is drafty, others that it is a little cramped... Indeed, from the outside I cannot imagine sitting inside is truly worth it. While the food is cooked to a high standard, and is clearly made with love and attention, I doubt it is worth an an awkward seating arrangement that looks like it would be thus from the outside!
No, the true beauty of this restaurant is in its summer outdoor seating. Despite The House itself being tucked into East Street's furthest corner, they have snagged the centre of the square as their outdoor space, and it is a truly magnificent space to relax. Their wine selection is varied enough to merit it as a drinking spot alone! When the spring rains cease, and the musicians come out to sing and play, and the leaves on the big tree in the centre of the square dapple the light... There are always crowds of people streaming through, and yet you don't feel hassled or jostled at all. This is my true, beating heart of Brighton in the summer, and I cannot recommend it enough.
Apart from the exquisite outdoor arrangement, there really isn't much to say. The food certainly isn't five-star, but is good enough not to ruin the outdoor experience, same goes for the drinks and service. Nonetheless, completely and utterly unmissable! read more
