Facepalm moment** The food was good. This place can be busy at peak times so watch out. If in doubt, I would book a table in advance but luckily, it was a weekday after school so we were able to waltz in and land on a table in no time. To be completely honest, I felt a bit bad not giving them a tip. Their card machines have that option where you can add a tip and I got a bit impatient to leave and went straight to pay for the bill. Take note, I checked the receipt afterwards and there is no service charge! Shocking! I'll remember next time. So sorry!

Perhaps a drink at the bar whilst waiting? Hmm. Well fortunately when we turned up, they did have a table for us. Right next to a hen party of 25 women. Who had obviously been drinking for some time, and were rather loud. We were told that if we ordered quickly then our orders would be put through before the hen party's order. So we did. And guess what. Our starters arrived and then nothing, while they got their food. An hour after arriving we were served our main course, served on cold plates. And although most of the food was acceptable, all the vegetables were cold. So the waitress was asked if some fresh hot vegetables could be served, and her reaction seemed to be one of Oh, yeah ok, it happens all time. No shock, no surprise, not even an apology. But then all the staff seemed to have an air of indifference and were very off-hand with us. It was 8.40pm when we were asked if we wanted desserts. As we were booked to go ten-pin bowling at 9.00pm we opted to skip this and just pay the bill. The bill arrived and was about £185, which we split between us, and £200 was given to the waiter. As we left it became apparent that he hadnt brought any change back. And then it was pointed out that an optional 10% service charge had already been added to the bill. So the actual cost was just under £170, and the change from the £200 had been kept. One of our party promptly returned and demand our change, and that the service be removed as we were not happy with the service. At first she was given £30 back, but standing her ground, the rest of was reluctantly given. I, and probably most of the group, will not use this particular establishment again. Update: Forgot to say that the optional (they're words) service charge is only added to groups of ten or more, so be warned

The menu is really inventive actually, using unusual ingredients that make this a refreshing change to all the regular fayre you'd find on a regular Indian take away menu. There's the Mombai potato curry with coconut, the aubergine in yoghurt curry and my personal favourite, the sweetcorn & patra curry - sweetcorn & chunks of vine leaves with a spicy paste in a tangy tomato curry sauce. The best part is you can try a few different dishes as there is an option to order half portions. Yey! From starters to dessert simply sensational. The ambience was excellent along with the décor. Customer service was top notch. They'd be waiting on us for every little thing we required. Quick food preparation and drinks were served pronto. The Lady waiter knew exactly which dishes were good and selected the wine she thought would compliment the meal. Spot on! very impressed. The food is freshly prepared in its open plan kitchen, so you can be pretty sure it's not pre-frozen and microwaved! Staff where friendly and efficient and the decor is neat and modern. The restaurant is spacious and well decorated, and the staff were welcoming on arrival. The menu consists of main meals, pasta, pizza, breakfasts and light bites. Neither my boyfriend or I wanted a massive meal so plumped for something from the light bites section. He went for the steak and red onion panini and I went for the breaded chicken, mozzarella and rocket panini, both were served with chips. The food was presented well and the portions large. Unfortunately, it was let down on taste. My chicken was unbreaded and the entire filling was pretty tasteless. The steak was nice but over powered by the red onion. The chips tasted like the frier oil needed replacing. My tea was fine (can't really go wrong with a teabag!), but they brought hot milk, and my boyfriend's Americano was minuscule. Once the food was delivered, nobody came to check if everything was ok, and when our plates were cleared and I mentioned the lack of breaded chicken, my comment was barely even acknowledged. With a large choice of similar restaurants in the area, we probably won't be rushing back.

My friend and I visited midweek and it wasn't hugely busy but I had high hopes for the food. There were a few things on the menu that were unavailable which was ok.. not the end of the world! I ordered the halloumi to start which came drizzled with honey - Halloumi = Yes but not with honey. Eeeek! For main, I had the chicken and mushroom risotto which was very nice and me and my friend had some Sex On The Beach cocktails between us. I liked the risotto, but the chicken seemed slightly undercooked. The prices are average but for the price of the food, I would like to visit again as I don't want one rubbish experience to cloud my judgement!

It's a cosy Italian restaurant with a menu that as cheap as chips, they offer mains for around £9 and gorgeous deserts for a fiver. Its has traditional decor and a nice atmosphere, although i'm dinging so close to the seafront I want a seaview which this venue is distinctly lacking.

At Casalingo however, I was shocked to find that there is still much room for Italian food. I had a swordfish dish that was certainly an experience; that makes me sound like i'm being sceptical, but in all honestly, that is more because I don't think swordfish is for me. The dish itself was cooked very well, seasoned with a hint of garlic, butter and olive oil. The biggest problem with Casalingo is that the decor is just a little bit too dated to make the evening entirely pleasurable. That said, if you're less shallow then me, look no further.

It tasted good, but it was a lot of bread for one person and I missed some vegetables. I had a little cheese on top of it and poured some of their kethup on, not bad actully, despite the fact of veggies lacking and the insane amount of bread. My better half said that his fries were the best he had in Brighton. I did not try them, but he referred to them as crisp and nice. They had some rosemary planted outside, but I dont think that would go too well with my bacon and ketchup, so the plants are still there (even if some green stuff would have been lovely on my sandwhich). The bread was good by the way, but I had to leave more than half of it. Other itmes on the menu looked good as well from what I could tell. They have some wines, some beers and nice coffee as well. From what I saw through the windows, the inside area looked well planned out design wise with wooden tables and chair. Price wise I guess its a little over average, but for a quick meal and a coffee, very manageable. Service was quick and nice. If ever in Brighton again, I would not hesitate to sit here for a couple of hours, sipping some cider and wathing people walk by. (Pardon any errors, English is not my first language).

It's latest reinvention is as Grow 40 and when other lunch spots were full, Grow 40 could offer us a table so we jumped at the chance. We were seated upstairs right at the back which is a very informal area, maybe better suited for coffee as opposed to lunch, but cosy none the less. There were four of us, plus the little man, so it was a bit of a squeeze around the small table, but we managed with a bit of juggling. As is the current fashion, Grow 40 favours local, independent produce, but unlike many other restaurants, they actually grow some of their own produce on their roof garden. Unfortunately, they don't have highchairs which meant it was a little difficult for me to eat my lunch while balancing a inquisitive one year old on my lap. It's quite unusual in family-friendly Brighton to find a restaurant that doesn't cater well for small people, and the lack of facilities was a surprise. I ordered a burger, and I have to say it was one of the best i've had a in a long time. Moist, flavoursome, well seasoned and tasty. The fries were a little salty but were also tasty. My partner had the fish and chips and was also very impressed - the fish was very fresh and not too oily. Our dining companions had the chorizo open sandwich and seemed to enjoy. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the vibe here is nice. I would like to try their breakfast menu as it features both lobster and champagne! They have a private members wine club which sounds intriguing but something I probably won't get to try out for a few years now! My only complaint is the lack of children's facilities. I'm not expecting toys and a kid's menu as it's not that kind of place, but changing facilities and a highchair should be available.

They offer pizzas for £3-5 and pastas for around £6, be careful though as they make their money by charging over the odds for really bad wine so avoid ordering alcohol if possible. They do student discount and set menu which reduced the price even more. The price and the Lanes location means its a great stop off for a quite while heading out for a shop or to the beach.
