Food is OK but expensive compared to other similar venues locally - the food is the same as the other pubs in this small, local chain. Not sure this is a good thing as, surely, most people choose a venue on it's food and this takes away that choice... They do offer a Dining Club discount on food (must include a main course) of 10% - this is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 'a steak for a tenner' deal on Thursdays. The whole pub is undergoing refurbishment in early 2024 inside and out which is great news as it was looking a bit tired when we last visited. Better weather sees the use of the large field for parking and al-fresco dining which proves very popular, especially at weekends as the pub is located in the South Downs National Park and is just a (steep) walk from the South Downs Way.

They will happily alter to suite vegetarians etc. Everything we had, from a light broad bean and mint velouté soup, 20 minute sugar/salt cured fresh mackerel blow touched to crisp the skin, local beef and two deserts was outstanding. The staff were very professional, knowledgable and helpful. Decor is modern, clean and very attractive. There is absolutely nothing I can say negative about this place. Apparently others feel the same way, it is becoming extremely difficult to get a reservation. Interestingly the kitchen is open and a hive of activity. Steven Edwards (an award winning British chef) and his team clearly know what they are doing and are not afraid to experiment and surprise. For example; bread is a light, warmed brioche bun with a glossy Marmite glaze. Absolutely stunning, especially considering I do not like Marmite! My wife, daughter and me spent a very enjoyable 3 hours dinning at Etch and left very happy and pleasantly surprised. The 8 course tasting menu is not over indulgent, just right for anyone with a normal appetite. You may have noticed all my reviews to date on Yelp have been 5 star, this is deliberate. Life is too short to focus on that which does not make us happy. This is why I restrict my reviews to those things/places that make me happy and appreciate life. Different kinds of meat offered on a skewer hanging vertically with a little plate and hole in the plate above the kebab to pour the selected sause onto. The food tasted good. Service was helpfull and friendly. Only criticism I have is that a fair number of things on the menu were 'out'. It dates back to the 1800s and used to be two pubs that were knocked into one so plenty of room for people throughout. The last time I ate there for lunch I had the Tuna Nicoise Salad which came loaded with nice big chunks of char-grilled tuna. We had a bottle of Rioja Blanco to go with it and it was excellent. Nice big garden that would suit a large group looking for a spacious place to enjoy a sunny Sunday lunch!
