I've had my foodie little eye on Graze for some time now, and I finally got to try it out last…read morenight for my Brother's birthday. The interior is plush and apparently influenced by the Brighton Pavilion. It's quite a small restaurant and the tables can appear quite cramped. For the first half hour, we were the only customers and I could hear the staff chatting away to each other which was a bit uncomfortable, however, the restaurant quickly filled up and was soon buzzing with atmosphere. Graze offer an al la carte or tasting menu. The birthday boy had his eye on the tasting menu and as we had to order for the whole table we didn't want to disappoint. I also decided to accompany him with the wine pairing - what a kind sister I am!! The tasting menu included 7 courses, two of which included an option of two which is a nice touch. Homemade bread in four flavours was offered around repeatedly but I was conscious not to fill up too much! The first course was Jerusalem artichoke soup with smoked hazelnut creme fraiche and hazelnuts crisps. This was paired with a very dry sherry, a little unpalatable on its own, but great in combination with the soup. Second course was a chicken liver parfait with pear and star anise jelly, served with a slice of sweet brioche - rich and delicious. This was served with a sweet Hungarian Tokaji. The others went for a butternut squash option but found it was lacking a little in taste and needed added seasoning. Third up was cauliflower and truffle risotto with chestnuts and Parmesan crisp. Matched with this was a crisp viognier. Next was one of my favourite dishes - beetroot cured salmon, pickled beetroot and beetroot puree, creme fraiche and what tasted like amaretti crumbs. The salmon was so fresh and light and the flavour combinations were exquisite. This was paired with a pinot blanc. For the next course we were offered a choice between halibut and venison. We all went with the venison which was served with polenta, grey chantelles and greens. A very tasty dish served with a light pinot noir. The pre-dessert was a chilled mandarin soup with clove sorbet. Such a fantastic dish I was half way through before I realised I had forgotten to take a picture! This came with a fabulous Pedro Ximenez sherry from the Jerez region of Spain. A much sweeter and nicer sherry than the first, at least for my tastes. The final course was a pear parfait with star anise ice cream and almond crumble, this was served with a sweet dessert wine and was a fine finish to a great meal. The Chef here has Spanish roots and you can certainly feel the Mediterranean influence shining through here. The flavour combinations were great and the presentation was exquisite (somebody has been watching Masterchef!). The service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was nice. So close to a five star review, but nothing took my breath away, and a few extras such as amuse bouche would have been appreciated*. *Am I really saying there wasn't enough food here, I certainly didn't leave hungry!!

It's kind of a gone a bit 64 degrees with the tapas style plates but the portions are larger. The recommended 4 each, I think we had three and were stuffed. Highlights included scallops (which were so good we ordered 4 plates worth), pigs cheeks, truffle mac & cheese and blue fillet steak. Everything was amazing. As were deserts. They also sell scooners (3/4 pint) of a great draft. It went down a storms and is now my new fave draft. Service was perfect. Nice and chatty but not too so, and the cream of the crop was when we had to wait a bit for desert they gave us free beers while we waited (it wasn't even that long). The outside bar is fantastic with lots of Yummy drinks to choose from and has a lounging area with really comfy couches where you can just kick back and chill from a day of shopping or just to have a drink and relax! So, a nice place for a couple of hours in the sun, but be quick about it, cause we were not the only ones in for some sun. They also have a rather small menu, I choose the bacon sandwhich. It tasted good, but it was a lot of bread for one person and I missed some vegetables. I had a little cheese on top of it and poured some of their kethup on, not bad actully, despite the fact of veggies lacking and the insane amount of bread. My better half said that his fries were the best he had in Brighton. I did not try them, but he referred to them as crisp and nice. They had some rosemary planted outside, but I dont think that would go too well with my bacon and ketchup, so the plants are still there (even if some green stuff would have been lovely on my sandwhich). The bread was good by the way, but I had to leave more than half of it. Other itmes on the menu looked good as well from what I could tell. They have some wines, some beers and nice coffee as well. From what I saw through the windows, the inside area looked well planned out design wise with wooden tables and chair. Price wise I guess its a little over average, but for a quick meal and a coffee, very manageable. Service was quick and nice. If ever in Brighton again, I would not hesitate to sit here for a couple of hours, sipping some cider and wathing people walk by. (Pardon any errors, English is not my first language).

It's latest reinvention is as Grow 40 and when other lunch spots were full, Grow 40 could offer us a table so we jumped at the chance. We were seated upstairs right at the back which is a very informal area, maybe better suited for coffee as opposed to lunch, but cosy none the less. There were four of us, plus the little man, so it was a bit of a squeeze around the small table, but we managed with a bit of juggling. As is the current fashion, Grow 40 favours local, independent produce, but unlike many other restaurants, they actually grow some of their own produce on their roof garden. Unfortunately, they don't have highchairs which meant it was a little difficult for me to eat my lunch while balancing a inquisitive one year old on my lap. It's quite unusual in family-friendly Brighton to find a restaurant that doesn't cater well for small people, and the lack of facilities was a surprise. I ordered a burger, and I have to say it was one of the best i've had a in a long time. Moist, flavoursome, well seasoned and tasty. The fries were a little salty but were also tasty. My partner had the fish and chips and was also very impressed - the fish was very fresh and not too oily. Our dining companions had the chorizo open sandwich and seemed to enjoy. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the vibe here is nice. I would like to try their breakfast menu as it features both lobster and champagne! They have a private members wine club which sounds intriguing but something I probably won't get to try out for a few years now! My only complaint is the lack of children's facilities. I'm not expecting toys and a kid's menu as it's not that kind of place, but changing facilities and a highchair should be available.

Let me just emphasize by saying that dining in a takeaway or a fast-food joint is considered fine dining compared to eating at this restaurant. I'd booked this restaurant based on vibrant professional pictures of its food and great reviews for a birthday celebration and taking my elderly parents for a meal out to celebrate my birthday. Upon arrival, we found this restaurant to be dark and narrow with dirty, greasy windows and dust all over the colorful lights. We were greeted by a young lady who possibly hadn't showered or washed her hair and body in days as she was reeking with the smell of unwashed hair and BO. There was absolutely no ambiance to this restaurant to speak of, and we didn't get a sense of cleanliness or attention to any detail. We were seated and as my parents enjoy Lebanese / middle eastern food I was hopeful that their food may make up for the awful first impressions and redeem itself. Alas, I was wrong and in hindsight, we should have just walked out. We sat down and ordered a bunch of appetizers and our main meals. The starters and our drinks came out ok, albeit being delivered with an added smell of sweat from the lady serving us. At one point, I felt nauseated from getting a whiff of her moving around but I let it pass. She then proceeded to bring two of the meals out and put them down and then asked what we had ordered again! which was shocking as she was the one taking our order to begin with! My mother had ordered the cod which was listed on their menu and after she had served two out of the four dishes already, proceeded to say ...."oh sorry we don't have cod we have shrimp or seabass". If an item that is listed on your menu is out, you mention that when you are taking the orders, not when you are serving the food to two out of the four guests. Usually in any normal restaurant, food for the table is served all at once so people can enjoy eating together. My mom said she'd like the seabass; she went off to the kitchen. We waited, waited, waited... drank our drinks, ordered more drinks... waited and waited while the other two dishes got cold. When we enquired where the other two dishes are and when they are getting served, she came by to say the other two main meals are coming out in 5 mins... then another 5 minutes... after 35 minutes past serving two of the four dishes, the other two main meals hadn't come out yet! There was one person in their kitchen dealing with the food who was not Lebanese trying to cook / fake cook Lebanese dishes but failing miserably at that too. The smelly lady kept giving excuses that they only have one cook in the kitchen and that is why the main meals for the other two dishes take so long. I found her excuses unacceptable. Nothing justifies or excuses this kind of service at any restaurant. If a restaurant is open and is taking reservations, then they should be prepared to serve a decent food and service. It is not my concern how many cooks or chefs you have in the kitchen, but whoever is in charge should be prepared to properly serve if every seat in the house is filled up. This place couldn't even cope with 4 main meals and delivering them together all at once! Let me just say that I can't unsee what I experienced at this restaurant and this place goes down as the most terrible experience in the history of eating out. I would not recommend eating at this restaurant for any reason, unless you enjoy eating amongst dirt, sweat and unwashed people circling around. I don't want anyone else experiencing what we just endured and have a ruined day / special occasion celebration. Utterly disgraceful!

The pub decor is really comfy and tastefully furnished. The staff are friendly and down to earth and don't get flustered even when its completely rammed. My favourite part of the pub to sit is the cozy 'blackboard bar' which serves the best sirloin steak baguette and chips ever! They also stock some local Sussex wines here which are best enjoyed in the huge beer garden in the Summer!
