I had a good day here. I went in for the afformentioned £3 lunch* and got myself a fine tasting spagghetti dish with black olives and parsley. The deal stretches to a few 12" pizzas, which is impressive, and looks equally delicious. My meal was prepared and brought over promptly, and I was offered a generous dousing of black pepper and parmasan which I accepted eagerly. For £3, I was damn impressed by the quality, and I got a strong impression that heading by in the evening and paying full price would turn out even better results. The right balance of oil and garnish made for a memorable meal. Zafferelli is also a great place due to its high quality finish, with menus, chairs and even the bills presented in stylish black leather that compliments the overall style of the establishment. It also exudes italianness, which is something you just don't get with the large chains like Pizza Express and Strada. The manager sang along to the Italian music playing over the speakers, and had a passionate greeting in speedy loud Italian with one of his guests. All in all, a damn good night out who's price, well stocked menu and finishing more than warrant a subsequent return or two. *which admittedly carried a reusable service charge of 10%, but I was more than happy to pay it seeing as I actually felt as though I was getting damn good service read more

LOVE THIS PLACE! My family has been coming here for over 10 years every time we visit the Brighton & Hove area. If you like dumplings, my favorite dish is the potato gnocchi, made on site. Other family favorite's include the lasagna, mozzarella in carrozza, prawn risotto and their assortment of Italian desserts. Great set menus and theater menus. Very reasonable pricing for high quality food. Every once and a while you see the head chef (a short older Italian lady) peak her head out of the kitchen to have a look at the customers enjoying their meals! So sweet!!! read more

Nice italian restaurant in the centre of Brighton. What I liked most was the lunch offer: 1 plate of pasta/pizza + soft drink for £4.55. Zafferelli is right opposite big Italian themed chain restuarant Strada - as Samantha C. said, it's a real shame as it means Zafferelli is often dead. Beats me, as the food here is much nicer, not to mention cheaper. Go there for lunch and they usually have a deal on - at the moment it's pizza or pasta for £3. It's a good all rounder with cheap prices, a nice interior, friendly staff, good location, and yummy food. Just a shame it's not more thriving - the customers always look way happier than those in Strada! read more

This is a perfectly reasonable place to sit outside (in nice weather) and enjoy a well cooked, well presented plate of pasta with some good service thrown in. I'm not sure why its so cheap but I'm guessing with so much competition in the area they have no choice. It has a really nice location too and is ideal to stop off after a long wander around town and relax. They also have some really nice wines available but only sell bottled beers which are a touch over priced. read more

Zafferelli has a really central local on New Road but suffers from a lack of custom due to the chain restaurant Strada opposite. Its really sad because they have really amazing food but even on weekends they have barely any customers and Strada is packed. The good thing about the situation is that the restaurant often does really cheap deals and staff can often be seen flyering up and down North Road. Its worth popping in if you don't mind dinging in a relatively empty restaurants as the food is really gorgeous. read more

Considering that a sandwich in Brighton costs close to £5, £3 for an American Hot pizza or Carbonara is brilliantly cheap. I won't question the freshness of the food, or indeed the quality, because for £3, you know that something somewhere will have to be compromised. Regardless of all that conjecture though, this is certainly a bargain. The pizza was a little bit salty and greasy, but it would rival any Domino's equivalent, despite costing a quarter of the price. I would mention what is now a 20% service charge, be aware of the hidden cost. Still, £3.60 for a hot lunch, everytime. read more

My wife had Alla Pollo with tagliatelle, I had bacon, tomatoes, black olives in a tomato sauce, ( can't remember the name of the dish), and my friend had Canneloni with spinach. I really wanted to love this place. It presented itself as an authentic Italian restaurant. And being directly across from a major chain which also showcases Italian fare, I choose for what appeared to be the real deal. I ordered the mixed salad and the pasta with meatballs. I was sorely disappointed and I didn't want to be. It was a beautiful evening and I was enjoying a meal on the patio in Brighton watching the wonder of the world pass by. The salad was a menagerie that wasn't cohesive and lacked flavour. There is a point in which the selection of ingredients should be reduced in order to focus on a few key flavours and a punch of flavour. I was also surprised that the tomato sauce tasted like there was a hint of cream. I wasn't expecting this and it didn't enhance the flavour. A little bit of seasoning might have gone a long way to change my mind on this place. The meatballs were a let down. I love meatballs and these were the main reason I ordered this dish. They were dense and dry. And again, required a touch of seasoning. Beyond the food, it felt like the servers were paying more attention to acquiring patrons (understandably as the place wasn't packed) versus focusing on the patrons they had. A touch more attention may have offset some of my feelings on the food however I doubt it. read more

Zafferelli has one has a great central location on the corner of North Street and New Road, so you'd think it would attract passing trade from the main street as well people heading in and out of the North Laines...however disastrously its situated across the street from Strada. I see tireless efforts from staff flyering and standing with cheap deals signs outside and feel so sorry to them! That said the situation does mean they have very completive prices and incredible bargain deals, so its worth checking out coz you cant really go wrong with Italian! read more

Due to the average nature of most, I rarely say this about Italian restaurants but Zafferelli is a decent place to eat. It doesn't do any harm to Italian cuisine as many disappointing places do. Due to the many competing restaurants in the vicinity it's a great place to find some good deals, particularly the seafood risotto because it's one of the best I've tasted. It's perhaps not the best place to visit if you're trying to impress but it'll definitely show how astute you are in your restaurant choices. read more

Me and my partner came to this restaurant today, deceived by the authentic exterior and pricey menu to believe we would be in for a treat. Unfortunately, this was not the case. As we fancied some garlic, we made sure garlic was included in every dish we ordered. Our starters, garlic mushrooms and garlic bread, betrayed our expectations. Basically just mushrooms and toast. The main dish, also not even a hint. Very disappointing. Would not recommend unless you enjoy extremely bland food. Waiters, however, are very nice and service is quick. read more

Unlike many Italian places Zafferelli is decent enough that a genuine Italian wouldn't be unlikely to eat here. The term Italian cuisine is itself a rather moot one these days as pizzas and pasta don't exactly reside solely in restaurants. However, there is a certain class that goes into the dishes that makes the difference between the mundane and the acceptable: Zafferelli has that class. "Order the inexpensive lunch if you want to be treated like a second class citizen" This place has an inexpensive lunch menu of £3. Wow, great idea, I thought. I ordered the carbonara and it came out tasting good and was piping hot. However, just one problem: The portion was TINY. Okay you may ask, what do you expect for £3? Well, when you order a lunch, no matter the price, you expect a normal sized portion not a half-sized one. You shouldn't have to leave a restaurant still feeling hungry. But it gets worse. I wanted to have a glass of water with it and found out they will not serve you a glass of regular water with the low-priced lunch menu. This has got to be the first restaurant I've ever been to where they will not give you a glass of water. You can of course, order a 500ml bottle of mineral water for £2,40, uh, thanks guys. If you are offering customers a lunch for £3 but you don't really want to give them a lunch, and won't even serve customers a drink of water I'd say it might be better not to bother and they're really doing themselves more harm than good in terms of customer good will. Apparently the service is nothing to write home about either, judging from the TripAdvisor reviews. One recent review their notes that their concerns that the chicken was completely done were met with an explanation of 'We are Italian!'. read more

Went here today with my mum for a coffee and cake. Considering it is an Italian restaurant the coffee is a joke. Insipid grey rubbish in a tiny cup for £2.35. Cake was good but not worth £4.50 a slice. Worst of all though was the waiter. Middle aged moustachioed 1/2 pint miserabilist who seemed to treat us with contempt as we only wanted coffee and cake. Place wasn't exactly busy so couldn't understand his attitude? Only time I saw his smile was when he kept flirting with the waitress' over half his age. Disgusting ill tempered little man. read more
