Vegetarian Indian - perfect for those of us who don't want meat but don't want a boring daal either. The menu is really inventive actually, using unusual ingredients that make this a refreshing change to all the regular fayre you'd find on a regular Indian take away menu. There's the Mombai potato curry with coconut, the aubergine in yoghurt curry and my personal favourite, the sweetcorn & patra curry - sweetcorn & chunks of vine leaves with a spicy paste in a tangy tomato curry sauce. I believe this restaurant has just moved here from Preston St ( Sept 2008 ). Its vegetarian and Indian. Brighton is lacking in good Indian foods. Most that I have tried have been poor standard. Planet India feels like a true Brighton restaurant- the kind of place that existed before all the sleek, fancy-pants chains moved in and Brighton began to be redeveloped within an inch of its life. How lovely to see a lovely unfussy Indian restaurant full of rustic charm, not to mention happy customers! This place truly reflects the Brighton I know and love. The food is simple and REALLY delicious- the ingredients are fresh and everything is cooked on site. I am rubbish with names, but I have eaten there a few times, and every dish I've had was wonderful. The cumin rice was really tasty. What's especially handy is that you can order half potions of many of the dishes, so you don't have to commit! Check out the wine list too- its extensive with lots of organic bottles. I wouldn't recommend just turning up- although this place is really relaxed and the owners lovely, its just too popular and you'll be risking serious disappointment! read more

Why haven't I been here before!!!!! Having lived in Brighton for so long, ive never been here despite enjoying a good curry. Planet India is my new curry house! My god. If you want authentic, tasty good food. Then come here. It's also BLOODY cheap. Between two people we had such a crazy amount of food and it cost us £20. Not each.. Between us! We had so much food. This place is really good! You can bring your own bottle.. Which is always a winner. The staff are very friendly and it's just got a good vibe. If your someone who likes to go to somewhere where it's really posh and upmarket .. This place isn't for you. It's got a home made feel, and care is taken more in the food than in the actual chairs and tables and other interior features. I think the reason why I avoided this place was because of the name.. Planet India... You often get similar names like planet pizza or pizza planet. The pizza always ends up being pretty shit! ( am I allowed to swear??) It's best to book quite far in advance as this place seems to be very popular and fills up quick! Came here with my veggie auntie and son as there had been such rave reviews on this place. It's a bit of dive inside, like an old grotty pub with crazy carpets and canteen like tables, but it kind of gives it a bit of an edgy, relaxed vibe. The service is great, so friendly and it's family run - cute pics of them on the walls. Indian decor, playing reggae music, love it! I had the starter that says on the menu ''the one you'll have been recommended!'' and that's exactly what I shall be doing! It was very different - kind of like cereal, crisps, coriander, onions, tomatoes, chilli, tamarind, cucumber and yoghurt all mixed together! Sounds weird but you really need to try it, it was goooood stuff. Then they do this ingenuous thing for those of us who are indecisive and greedy like myself, you can get half portions which meant I had 2 different dishes. As I meat eater, sometimes I don't feel properly fulfilled if I don't have any, so if you're like me (a proper carnivore!) then I'd settle for one of the dishes that includes paneer (an Indian cheese) it bulks the dish out a bit more and makes it feel more 'meaty'. Although getting two dishes I did start to feel a bit flavour/spice overloaded. You certainly shan't leave hungry! My 5 year old happily ate his (fairly spicy) korma which I was surprised about. They have a fab selection of unusual beers which really complemented the meal, just ask them for recommendations. If I'm dining out with veggie friends I shall not hesitate to suggest Planet India. read more

Excellent, unusual food, in a very casual but friendly athmosphere. I did try the famous starter, found it quite delicious, if perhaps the sauce was a tiny bit too sweet. It seemed a little bit similar to some of the Burmese salads I have had, but also quite distinct. Definitely a keeper. I also had an aubergine/eggplant yoghurt curry, which was delicious without feeling too creamy and heavy. The service was a bit scatterbrained, but very friendly. The bathrooms are great, waterfriendly toilets clearly newly remade, while the restaurant itself is a bit like a hodgepodge of furniture, perhaps waiting for its own renovation soon. Definitely try, a keeper, if a bit hidden. You won't likely just stumble upon it. Worth seeking it out. read more

I came here for a work dinner for the first time not knowing what to expect. The food is vegetarian and deliciously cooked. I had the dry black chickpea curry and it was probably the best curry I've ever had in Brighton. I even saved some to take home for lunch the next day! Portions are huge and decently priced. The staff were extremely helpful in offering suggestions and we didn't have to wait very long for our food... and there were at least 12 of us! The inside (and outside) are decorated very colourfully. If you want independent, friendly and home made then definitely go here. read more

I knew the owners of Planet India when they were still running a news agent on Upper Lewes Road. About 18 months after first meeting them they realised that they were making more money on the home cooked Indian food they were selling as a side line than they were from the rest of the business! I think that anecdote should give you an idea of the quality of the food here. It's all vegetarian and provides an example of *home cooked* Indian food. The staff are wonderful and the food is top notch. The prices also compare favourably with local competition, so if you fancy a decently sized, highly nutritious meal arpound Preston Street you could do a lot worse. read more

Planet India joins Bombay Aloo in being a rare meat free Curry House and Indian restaurant. For about £7 (or actually £6.64, weirdly enough) you can get two curries and rice, which is brilliant value, although understandably cheap given the lack of meat. The surrounding area isn't the best, located just off a huge high rise council estate in the middle of Hanover, there surprisingly isn't too much ambiance. Nonetheless, if you love Indian food but not meat, this is definitely the type of place to come visit, even if the food isn't quite as good as you'd hope, it is good value for sure. read more

Would have been a 3 star rating however:- 1.They added a service charge onto our bill for a party of four- I don't like this sort of sharp practice, if I want to leave a tip I will do. If a business feels it needs to charge more to cover the staff's wages then add it to the price of the food. Just sticking on a service charge to every bill is the sort of cynical rip off tactics I expect of the worst sort of tourist trap 2. While the synchronised microwave display behind the counter was amusing I expect my food to be freshly cooked by a chef rather than batch cooked some unspecified time before then reheated, particularly when I'm paying nearly 20 quid a head. On the plus side the puri starter was very good although the other items were lackluster and the mains average at best. Nice breads though. Overall pretty poor and I felt ripped off So much so I'm making sure that an alternative point of view is expressed to all the gushing comments I've read across the net. Judging by the other clientel I saw on the night I had the misfortune to attend I'd advise taking their opinions with a pinch of salt. They looked like the sort of trustafarians whose life experience outside the UK is limited to a month round the world back packing and now think they know it all.............. read more

Best Indian in Brighton! Great mix of well-known curries and ones I 've never heard of! The menu isn't massive and changes a couple of times a year. Recommend trying the starter of Dhai Bhel Puri, so tasty! If you like heat try the black chick pea curry, really blew my head off! Excellent value as well! All the mains cost the same and you can order 1 to 4 portions for excellent value! Even on a weekend they deliver very quickly as well. Try this place! read more

Thought I'd try a third time to see if they had improved, but no, I was let down again! I am of Gujarati origin and know what good quality Gujarati food should taste like and Planet India doesn't deliver. -Rice undercooked. -Aubergine in Aubergine curry undercooked. -Many of the main course curries have far too much chilli in them making them difficult to enjoy (Curries DO NOT have to be painfully hot will chilli to enjoy. They should have depth of flavour from other spices, not just chilli!). -No option to have any of the dishes made to order as a milder version. -Chapati flat bread far too oily (authentic ones are not like this!). -Menu describes 2 half portions as more than 1 full portion, and enough for '1 hungry person', but reality is a large bowl/plate with 2 very small portions of each curry. Difficult to enjoy 2 curries when they are served together in 1 bowl. Should ideally be served separately. -Slow service. Had to ask 3 times for a glass of tap water when the restaurant wasn't even busy. -Overpriced for many options. £2.91 for undercooked rice! £2.67 for 2 small-sized poor quality chapatti! Overall, very disappointed. Paid over £15 for substandard, overpriced food, and still came home hungry. I wouldn't give them a 4th chance to disappoint me again! read more

Planet India has moved to Richmond Place is now a much larger restaurant so there is a lot more space to sit and enjoy a meal. The food is all vegetarian and some of it is vegan. I went there with a party of 5 others, not all vegetarian, and they all raved about the food. The staff are very friendly and will advise on the dishes if so required, especially as to the hotness of some of the curries! The menu is varied with some different items on it. read more

A great little Indian restuarant. The atmosphere is very laid back, with non flashy decor. The food is excellent, all vegetarian and with the option to have half dishes you can get alot of variety in one meal. The 'salad type dish' starter is a must try, absolutely delicious. This is a great restaurant, I ventured in whilst I was staying next door at a youth hostel. I must say I got a friendly welcome and even though I was intoxicated and only had just over a tenner they were very accommodating and I got a lovely paneer massala, rice, poppodums and dip. Was really nice vegetarian food and really good value too, I will be going back for more read more
