Well renowned as the most bangingest curry house in Brighton. Kick ass vindaloos and speciality dishes all for a great price. Get on that!

Review Highlights - Shahi Tandoori

“What I particularly like about Shahi Tandoori is that it is split into two quite separate spaces, one side is the restaurant and one is the takeaway.”

My friend and I arrived at 4.58, and stayed until just after 6, and they were happy for us to do so, which meant we practically had a dinner at the place. And the food on offer was tremendous quality too, with a couple of different meaty curries, in addition to the vegetarian options and Sag Aloo, with a well stocked salad bar, naan and a few extra additions to bolster the buffet nicely. I'd recommend going earlier in the day though, as although the food was delicious, it was clear that we were the last people to dig into it, before they prepared for the evening surge. The lamb curry in particular was a joy for the taste buds, and comes with my greatest suggestion. My dinner partner still maintains that takeout curry tastes better, but there's nothing like being submerged in a well presented restaurant, and being presented with such a strong variety of food at such a good price. The Indian equivalent of Me Old China.

Mix different coloured food colouring into each one. Leave it all under a heat lamp for a week. Now open for business!!!! Ate here once, completely unchildfriendly with awful food which all tasted the same-crap. As authentic as Indian food cooked without Indian spices by a dog with no legs. It's a pity I have to give this review one star to post it

The staff are always friendly, and the food is divine. The food is piping hot, and the sheer range of dishes provided ensure that there is something for all tastes, and tolerances to spiciness. I thoroughly recommend the Ashoka, which is two minutes walk from the NPC car park in Hove

Per head you're probably looking at spending upwards of £15, which is fairly standard, but having entered with high expectations my evening was a little soured. I think you need to understand that despite it's grand façade, Ashoka is in the mid-range market for Indian restaurants. For example, the food is by no means poor but due to the décor it feels more like a colonial Indian as opposed to a traditional Indian restaurant. I can't help but think that Ashoka are selling themselves short by opting for this more restrained interior/ atmosphere. Despite its aesthetic shortcomings I had no complaints about the meal. As a takeaway, Ashoka is perfectly good, as they offer free deliveries for every order over £15 and a 10% discount on orders over £12. As such, I'd be more happy to recommend Ashoka as a takeaway than as a restaurant but if you like your local Indian to have a more British feel, then you'll probably enjoy it.

I don't know whether it's changed hands or something because each and every time I've ordered from there recently there has constantly been an issue. This time around I ordered a lamb tikka starter which is normally moist and delicious but the pieces of lamb were actually black. So overcooked and burnt I couldn't chew it. Lucky to still have teeth... They also forgot my poppadoms and mango chutney. My chicken kori had obviously been really sloppily made as it came with the hugest chunks of onion and pepper - they were just quartered and thrown in. Brighton is now officially RUBBISH for take-aways. Gutted.

Expecting me to say yes, I had a couple of friends offer to cook for me this evening... But…read moreinstead, I told them we were getting a curry. Disappointment turned to joy, and I was told we had to go to Surma Tandoori, which is my flat mates favourite curry house. Having had three years of expirience with the place, he should know, and assured me that the food was the best on Lewes road dispite several people raving about Bhindis just a little way up the road from there. We trusted his judgement, perused the reasonably priced menu (plenty of curries with rice for £5.20 - £7.00 as well as all the norms) and took our wares home with us, shivering against the wind. I've got to say, I was very impressed... It's restaurant quality stuff at prices that aren't breaking the bank. Nan's were fresh and fluffy, packing the right amount of flavour, and I was informed that the Bajji were damned good (the fact he wouldn't give away even one suggests he meant it). I thought about giving a 4* rather than 5, but seeing as no one else has, and the place seems to be run by such a grand family I thought I'd push the boat out! Now excuse me, as I think I may not be able to resist my leftovers after all...

Having always been a lover of a damn good Ruby, imagine my surprise to discover this little gem…read morenestled up in Fiveways not two minutes from my front door. Proclaiming itself to be Undoubtedly the Best Indian Take Away in Brighton & Hove, I couldn't possibly let it get away with a claim like that without putting it to the test, could I? And you know what? They may well be right... Having been steadily working my way through the Agra's menu since September, I haven't yet found a bad dish. Their curries are tasty without being overwhelmingly spicy and unlike a lot of curry houses, their meals aren't swimming in fat. But do they pass the ultimate test that of the non-soggy onion bhaji? Of course they do. I even order double so I can eat them to next day. Lush. The only downside (if you live anywhere other than right on top of it, like me) is that it doesn't deliver. And I must admit, it's for that reason that on a cold, rainy night we have gone elsewhere for our Friday night curry fix to save ourselves from changing out of our pyjamas and donning waterproof jackets to walk the five minutes there and back again. But when the weather is fair enough for us to shake off our laziness and venture out to collect our order, we've never had to wait more than half an hour, even after 8 o'clock on a Saturday night. Their prices aren't bad either a fair few dishes come with rice included in the price at no extra cost compared with other places, which saves a few pennies on side orders. Having been unable, thus far, to sample every curry house in all of Brighton & Hove I can't comment definitively, but as far as a good Ruby goes this is definitely one of the best you'll find.

I have yet to meet anybody with a bad word to say about Agra (that even includes vegetarians). I personally have only positive things to say about everything i've eaten here.
