Meze for two + some extras

Al Rouche is one of those inexpensive and unpretentious places where you go to eat because of the food, not because of the occasion. It is a family restaurant run by actual Lebanese people. The appetisers are their strongest suit in my book -- you can literally just go and have a few and be done. The lamb meals are also quite good, but be prepared for large quantities. Service is always nice and friendly. Usually it's calm and quiet, but the place is smallish and occasionally it could get busy.

The extremely sociable staff are probably the only reason I would go out of my way to revisit Al Rouche. In terms of taste the food is fine but unfortunately the presentation tends to make an otherwise mouth-watering dish look a little unappetizing. However, it doesn't detract from the experience too much and to give it credit, Al Rouche does some pretty dam tasty Baklava and while it looks a little cumbersome the Mezze plate is well worth £8.95.

Kambi's Restaurant

Kambi's Restaurant

Kambi's was absolutely rammed on a quiet wednesday evening. I went with a dear iranian friend and…read morepassed by some spots I expected to be pretty packed at 9. Most other joints on the seafront and western road seemed pretty empty. Even the newly opened Jetty was a bit desolate. Folks seem to identify the food as a bunch different things, but the waiting staff definitely knew what was going on with persian dishes and names. We ordered the koobideh, a seasoned and marinated ground lamb dish served over rice with grilled tomatoes. As a side order, a gentle garlic yoghurt (mast maseer, they stylized it). In true iranian style we had a tableside bowl of sumac (a tangy, slightly citrusy berry ground into powder and used in middle eastern and especially iranian cuisine) which was pretty exciting. The meat was good, but a bit pricy for what it was. Thankfully the mix of raw onion, garlic yoghurt, saffron rice, and bits of decent lamb became more than the sum of its parts. 14 pounds each plus tip for that and 2 diet cokes was a bit much. I guess maybe it's unfair to compare everything to riddle & finns before 7:15. I would certainly go back to Kambi's when I'm in the mood for that lovely sumac. Apparently they do fessenjan on a Sunday, so I'll definitely be back for that. Slow cooked persian chicken is out of this world. The atmosphere was also quite endearing, with a persian family celebrating their toddler's birthday -- for which the staff put on a(n appropriately accented) happy birthday tune -- some token persian businessmen, and some british families. Everyone joined in the singing and clapping, which was nice. 3 and a half stars.

It was well after the lunch rush, and before folks started showing up for dinner, so I had the restaurant to myself. I looked over the menu, and decided that I wanted their hommos schwarma starter. After I had ordered it, I changed my mind, and felt I really wanted the spicier version of their hommos instead, the hommos Beiruty. They ended up giving me both, charging me for one, and provided loads of pita. I was looking for a snack, but this was turning into a meal! Anyway, I mentioned that I really enjoyed ayrans, a salted yogurt drink common to the Mideast, and asked if they could make one (it wasn't on the menu). The cook said he most certainly could, and had his own special recipe. Wow. They were not only providing a fairly cheap meal, but also a special drink not even on the menu! Anyway, both plates of hommos were tasty, especially the hommos Beiruty. The ayran, however, was in a class all to itself: it was singularly the best ayran I'd ever had in my life! I finished it, and they came by and filled up another glass (free of charge, no less). I walked out for 16 pounds, and had a bunch of leftovers! I regret with my activities this week that I could not stop by again. But I told folks I knew here all about it. Well worth a visit if you're in Guildford, even for the day.

Sahara - Spice bar?

We were looking for somewhere…read morefor an inexpensive bite to eat with a friend, and outside Sahara was an 'A' board advertising as its headline 'Set Lunch £6.95, Dinner £8.95'. In the adjacent window the set menu selection looked very good, with plenty of lamb, chicken and vegetarian options. This hit the spot so we went in. We were given menus, but found no sign of the set menu at £8.95. We asked about it, and were treated to a rather loud and slightly embarrassing exchange between the waitress and kitchen of 'are we doing a set menu tonight?' which went on for a few minutes. The waitress then said they weren't - the offer was only on weekdays, which did not include Fridays. We pointed out they were advertising it outside (with no caveats about which nights it applied to). Then another member of staff appeared, and suggested the weekend set menu - which, at £38 for two, was more than double the price. I pointed out that they were advertising something different outside - after all, it's not a great effort to take in an 'A' board. He just repeated that the offer was on Mondays to Thursdays only. We felt ripped off - we'd been lured in on a false premise. We left with a bad taste in our mouths - so can't actually comment on the food...

I noticed India mentioning that Sahara can be a little bit pricey, but this can be avoided if you come between Monday and Thursday. During these days/nights, you can get 2 courses from as little as £6.95 (£8.95 in the evening). If like me, you are big on trying to take advantage of these promotions, Sahara is definitely a restaurant that should be added to your list of potential choices. I had a mixed meat dish served with couscous and salad, I can say with all certainty that I was not disappointed. Sahara is good alternative to the more Western restaurants, I could certainly see myself heading back.
