I also like that there's an option for sticky black rice as the base. It's a tiny place with only one six person table inside (plenty of outdoor seating) and they do takeaway. Firstly, the people that work here are totally awesome - very chatty and genuine - just the kind of people that you enjoy giving business to. I had a green smoothie and a chicken Bibimbap to go. The smoothie was very green indeed! I loved it, but be warned - this tasted like veggies. It's not one of those healthy smoothies that hides behind sweet, fruity tastes - it fully embraces it's healthiness, rocking the broccoli and spinach unashamedly, so if you don't like your smoothie to taste to 'green' then this one isn't for you! They have plenty of tasty options, so perhaps go for one of the other smoothies insetead! As for the chicken Bibimbap (which I horrendously mispronounced, might I add) this was very tasty! I'd never really had this sort of thing before, so it took me a few minutes to get used to the flavours, but once I got past that it was a very good take-away meal. The portion was massive and they'd packaged it all up really nicely, making it easy to take to a park and eat in the sun without any bother or mess. There were so many other things that I would have happily tried in here! They had amazing looking fresh sushi up for grabs which, though a little pricier than elsewhere, did look rather great. I'm sure that I'll be back here! Next time you're walking past, pop in and see what you think! :)

I'm picky about my Asian markets, and this is the one I end up going to most frequently in…read moreBrighton. In tandem with my biweekly organic japanese vegetable box from nama-yasai, this supermarket tends to have everything I need to round out my Japanese pantry. There's little in the way of goods from other Asian countries, so while the cuisines often share ingredients in common -- soy sauce, sesame oil -- just note there's not much Chinese fare on offer, and just a scant smattering of Korean seasonings that are popular in Japan. Among the items they have in stock that you will likely find it difficult to find elsewhere (and I say this because I tried to find them elsewhere) are: - Katakuriko, or potato starch, commonly used similarly to how corn starch is used in other cusines and of course gluten free! - Konyakku, a block of yam cake seasoned with seaweed (like shirataki noodles, which they also stock, but the solid block form can be harder to find) - Mountain vegetables, used in stews and one pot meals - Chikuwa, or grilled hollow cylindrical squid cakes - Frozen sushi grade fish - Japanese style cake mix and pancake mix, which are different from one another, and used by a ton of recipes on cookpad website They also carry fresh Japanese foods made in house, of which the harder-to-find offerings would be takoyaki (fried octopus/squid inside spherical dough), onigiri (rice balls with a filling in the center), and mochi/daifuku (a type of dessert made from sweet rice pounded into a dough and a sweet filling in the center). And while I mean no offense to E-Kagen, here are things I don't recommend you get there, or which you can't get there: - Umeboshi (japanese pickled plums), because they're not the tastiest and overpriced for the small quantity... see if you can get the jarred Clearspring ones from Infinity foods instead. - Umeboshi purree, because it's common in Japanese recipes to request chopped Umeboshi to be added to something, especially a dressing, and it's cheaper and faster to use this item instead... E-Kagen doesn't carry it, so you'll need to go to hiSbe for it. - Shiso-ume seasoning, commonly used with rice... E-Kagen doesn't carry it, but neither does anybody in Brighton. Le sigh. - The selection of fresh japanese vegetables is limited (this is true of anywhere in Brighton) and you will probably need to go to Japan Centre in London for what you seek, or order a vegetable box like I do. Credit card minimum is 10 pounds, and they charge extra for packets of condiments if you are buying any of their ready made food (e.g. packets of soy sauce and wasabi carry a charge). The staff is always very friendly and you can ask them if you're looking for something specific, though sometimes the answer is that they don't have it!

Bincho Yakitori - Miso butter sweet corn

A surprisingly good yakitori restaurant in the heart of Brighton. Probaby closer to a 4 than a 5…read morerating but given the relatively slim options for this classic Japanese cusine in England it is absolutely worthy of your attention. Upon entry the interior will already give off some good signals - it looks and feels like you'd expect a proper yakitori place would be. It's also quite busy so clearly this is not a hidden gem for the locals. The food and drink was really good. Chicken was juicy, tender, and cooked to perfection; normally I don't like sauce on my yakitori but here what they used was subtle and tasty. The typical asparagus and bacon sticks with bacon however were were really, really good and may be the best versions of these classic skewers that I've ever had. Sake selection was also on point and not outrageously expensive like it is at other locations around the country. The server recommended a great one to me and was very well informed on the selection. What's not to love? This place appears to be often packed and if you're sitting at the bar expect to be squeezed in amongst other patrons. Very recommended if you're in Brighton!

There has been a lot of hype surrounding Bincho Yakitori, and my god do they live up to it!…read more They have a great bar which you can sit by and watch the chefs work, sadly there was no space (we luckily got a last minute reservation on a saturday night at 9pm) so we were seated at the back of the restaurant, quite a tight fit as our neighbours pinged their lemon slice over to our table, but no problem, the atmosphere was great! The concept is all small plates with the idea to share with the rest of the table. I definitely over ordered. My eyes were certainly bigger than my belly! To start we had pickles & kimchi - I always order these at other asian places. We then proceeded to order pretty much every vegetarian dish (my partner had the pork belly and chicken thigh skewers and said both were amazing). I asked our waitress how many she suggested, she told us 2-3 dishes each to start with then we can aways order more if hungry. But we are greedy greedy people so ordered an astonishing 9 dishes, it was definitely too much! Luckily I took it all home in a box and had it for lunch the next day. My favourite dish was the miso aubergine and the green salad. The green salad came with crispy lotus root and tamarind. Great sake selection, I opted for the nigori cloudy sake which was served traditionally in a glass, which is inside a masu - which is essentially a little wooden box. You may think this is strange, but the wood adds to the flavour of the sake. You can either drink straight from the box, or pour into your glass when you've finished the glass. Also had a great selection of Whisky which we of course sampled. Our bill came to just over £100 for 2 of us, and I am not ashamed to say £50 of it was all on whisky! I will definitely return, and maybe order less dishes, but still the same amount of whisky!

After looking at the windows of several Korean restaurants on Burlington Road, I settled on Me You as having the best local reviews up in the window. The atmosphere was like a local family restaurant with no rush to turn tables over. Although the waitresses didn't speak good English, I was eventually able to get the advice I was seeking on the food. It helped that the menu had a picture of every dish available. I was also impressed that the waitress taking my order gently suggested that 3 dishes might be too much for even a greedy pig like me! And she was right as the portions were big. I started with the Haemul Pajeon (Korean Seafood Pancake). This was lovely - crispy on the outside with small bits of seafood and spring onion. I also had a bowl of seafood with noodles in a spicy soup - I think it was called koppongi. I was startled to find not just a mussel in its shell but also whelks still in their shell in the soup - proves that the seafood was fresh and not frozen! The soup was spicy enough to wake up the tastebuds I'm starting to get a feel for Korean food after a few visits to Korean restaurants. Their food philosophy is the opposite to the Japanese, which rely on few flavours and ingredients but each flavour is distinct and obvious. On the other hand, Korean food is a whole melange of everything thrown together - meat, seafood, vegetables, flavourings. Even bibimbap, which is served with all the ingredients in separate piles in the bowl, must be all mixed together and coalesced before you tuck in. I enjoyed my visit here and have spotted a few dishes I would like to return and try.

Since moving to London, I had been having great difficulty finding authentic Asian cuisines (Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, etc.). After being let down at Jee Cee Neh on the same block, I decided to give You Me a try, given the favourable reviews. PROS - Very comfortable, intimate and inviting space. Greeted warmly when we stepped in and immediately had a table cleaned up for us. The menu had pictures for EACH item, making the process of deciding which item to get extremely hard because well shit, I wanted everything. My date and I finally narrowed it down to an order of the large dumplings, spicy black bean sauce with noodles and the oxtail soup. We were blown away. The "large dumplings" weren't really "dumplings" per se, but actually hot fluffy buns filled with a generous amount of yummy pork and veggie filling, served with an equally yummy (soy sauce/vinegar/hint of red pepper) dipping sauce. It was such a good deal as well for those suckers. For about £6, you get 6 large hot and fluffy buns. That alone could be a meal but that was filed under "appetizers" in their menu. The spicy black bean noodles was done perfectly, I don't know what else to say about that except the noodles were fresh and the sauce was just so freaking good. The oxtail soup was not bland, but just a sip of it will let you know they have stewed it for a long time. The soup was no instant bouillon type of nonsense. It was the real deal. The soup was served with complimentary Korean rice. Another HUGE PRO - Complimentary refills on your BAN CHAN. That's right, not only did we get more banchan (the side dishes they serve you to refresh your palate) here than at Jee Cee Neh, they immediately restocked our banchan, free of charge when we ran out. How awesome is that? That alone would make me come back to try their dishes but will everything going to fabulously, I would be crazy NOT to go back. CONS - Absolutely none. I was so pleased with the quick service, the amazing food for great prices, and the portions (above average!). Shoot, even the bathrooms were really clean. Everything was so great. POINTERS - You Me kicks Jee Cee Neh's hind quarters out of the bush ..........yup. Pictures to come!

I guess there's always a danger of disappointment when a restaurant comes so highly recommended, but I just didn't find Sukhothai to be all that outstanding! I am a big fan of Thai food and hence, well versed in the many Thai restaurants of Brighton. Long story short, I've had better! The restaurant itself is comfortable and traditionally decked-out- it's a nice enough space in which to dine, sure! And the waitresses were friendly and attentive, possibly a little too attentive, since there weren't many customers to tend to. The food, however, was just a bit...unexceptional. I missed the ornate garnishes at Muang Thai and the tasty dishes at Thai Orchid. My green curry was fine, the flavours were good, but it wasn't nearly spicy enough. My dining companion's Pad Thai was also tasty, but there were no peanuts!! All in all, pretty standard food in a nice enough restaurant. The location near the seafront is handy if you're visiting, but not so great if you live in a residential area out of town.

A group of us had planned to go for dinner elsewhere but our first choice was fully booked, so we wandered a few streets along to this place, to see whether they could squeeze us in. Being a Thursday night, we'd been a little shocked about how packed the first place was but, happily, Sukhothai Palace was completely empty, so fitting us in was no bother at all. The woman seated us at a lovely table and handed us the menus. The decor in really nice in here - it felt a lot more upmarket than I had been expecting actually and I was impressed by it all. That being said, the atmosphere was a little lacking, with us being the only customers in the place for the majority of the time we were in there. The menu is great - there is so much choice and variety that I doubt anyone who struggle to find something they liked the sound of. I opted for the sizzling duck with jasmine rice. The food arrived and the portions were hearty, which is always a plus in my book. The rice was done well, though it didn't taste especially different to boiled rice, I must say, and the sizzling duck was tasty! The sauce was delicious, however the duck was a little bit fatty in places, which was a bit of a shame. It came with some crunchy onion and a few leaves, which were nice little garnishes to add something to the dish. I ate it all and enjoyed it very much! The service in here was pleasant, but it was a little bit slow and relaxed, especially considering we were the only people in the place! However, the staff were very smiley and polite, so other than this, there was nothing to put you off! As for prices, mine came to £10 (without a drink). I'd say the average main came to around £7-£9, with rice adding another £1.50, so all in all, the prices are pretty decent in here, particularly for the nice portion sizes. This was a really pleasant experience and I'll probably be back to try more!
