I'm amazed that I nearby forgot to review this wonderful British institution. This restaurant is looking dated and some of the young staff jaded but still 5 star for the food and the deal for folks like us 'over a certain age'. Haven't the heart to tell them I still think I'm 17. Anyway on arrival it was busy. The young lady serving looked straight at us but didn't come toward us, as we stood by the please wait to be seated sign. Aren't we a compliant lot? We may be over a certain age but it doesn't make us invisible nor compliant for too long. A few staff passed by, still we stood. I decided there goes the tip (it originates as written on boxes on tables in Victorian tea houses - to insure promptness abd if you put a coin in being seated you got served promptly). So we thought beggar this, picked our own table, sat down and the girl we saw on entry brought menus. So 5 star perfect, lightly battered, crispy cod, very good chips and wonderful mushy peas arrived and were enjoyed and all our cares didn't matter a while. All 1st world problems anyway. Then it was 2 star factory made hot apple crumble and factory made custard (that some places deem alright for folks of a certain age - my response wouldn't be accepted here, despite only being three words long ending in yourself. Followed by a tea and Americano both 5 star. All for a tenner. Yes a tenner. 10 English pounds. No doubt the staff are minimum waged as there were no living wage signs up. Time to make it law and if a firm can't pay living wages then close. If you didn't pay tax the tax man would shut you down. Before I go just a thought. What reviewers like us do on Yelp without thought is engage in free speech. No threats of death here (yet) but as our world turns more extreme and parts of the west dabble with fascism (imagine Trump the sequel) just think about the attack on Sir Salman Rushdie for thought penned to paper because someone opined he had caused offence. Now mine here is only two words with one being of. This man of words who gave us Midnights children on the partition of India. We in Ireland know something of partition. In an earlier life (but still in his present life) he was the mind behind 'that'll do nicely (American Express), Bubblelicious (for aero chocolate) and Naughy but nice (for British fresh cream cakes). Service was terrible but food was great. When we arrived, we told the manager that we were pressed for time and in return he made us wait twenty minutes so that they could just push tables together to accommodate our size, and then said that our time constraint "wasn't his problem" and he that he couldn't be bothered about it. In the end, his attitude improved because he ended up asking us to write a review for him on TripAdvisor. The rest of the staff was comparatively better. So the servers here really don't know how to speak English... explaining how a drink came with a shot of gin was incredibly difficult. The waitress couldn't really understand. A friend told me to come here for the fish and chips! Of course, I had it and it was pretty good! The chips were a little bland but the it was decent. Ordering was such a pain though. It's been a long time since I've been to Harry Ramsdens so I was looking forward to going as I used to love their chips. I don't eat fish so I was interested to see what else they have on the menu. I was surprised by the variety. They have burgers, sausages, vegetarian lasagne, even salads. One of the group I was with is vegan. She asked the waitress if they had anything on the menu which is vegan and the waitress said 'chips'. Then she said 'and the vegetarian lasagne'. My friend pointed out that it has egg, milk, butter and cheese in it and the waitress just shrugged. I had a burger. I was impressed with it. Nice juicy burger which came medium-rare which I liked a lot. I didn't like the chips, which I was really disappointed about. I love chip shop chips and Harry Ramsdens claims to be famous for its fish and chips but they weren't slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. If you finish it, you get a little certificate. That's the ultimate Tourist-y thing to bring home from England: a piece of paper announcing your gluttony. And I managed to finish it. The fish was very good. I thought it was wonderfully fried, not at all soggy, and was nice and tasty. The fries were a little soft for my taste, but that's a regional thing. We took a trip to Brighton on a nice Spring Saturday, with no real plan other than "getting fish and chips". After our adventuring/wandering, we were starving, but unwilling to face the lottery that is the 100 chip chops and takeaways lining the seafront in Brighton. So we opted for this. Harry Ramsden's is a known chain to me, though more through good reputation than anyone else. It seemed like a good idea; you got a seat, for one, and had a much bigger choice dishes and accompaniments than the plain ol' fish & chips you could get from anywhere. So I knew we'd be getting decent quality, with trimmings (tartare sauce, peas) and a shelter from the descending sun and increasing breeze as the evening approached. Of course, you pay extra for all this, making it probably twice the price of the nearest chippy, but I'd say it is well worth it, and it's still well priced compared to most restaurants. It's very family friendly with a very swift "sit, order, eat, pay" service. So very informal. Perfect for a bit of fish 'n' chips. My wife and I both opted for cod & chips (the classic!) and my Mother-in-law took advantage of the "seniors" special, which was much the same but included dessert. I absolutely wolfed my fish down, which said something for my hunger, but also for the finely made crispy batter and the white, fresh-tasting cod. I ate all my chips, too, which is rare and one of the reasons that I think an unknown chippy can be a lottery - but these were perfect. Everything, including our treacle & ginger pudding with custard, was delicious and good value. Oh, except for the peas. The peas were atrocious - "fresh" from the bag at the bottom of the freezer, I should imagine. So that's Harry Ramsden's. It just seems so much better when you're sitting inside eating it I had place and chips it was cooked to perfection the batter was lovely and crispy the fish was lovely and light and full of flavour and fresh the chips were nice too and a nice cup of latte . While looking for a place to get fish and chips near the Brighton Pier, I came upon this restaurant. From the branding and signage of the restaurant, I had a feeling that I'd enjoy my meal at Harry Ramsden's because it's "World Famous." And when you see "world famous," it usually means that it is a tourist favorite. Well, I hate to pin myself as a tourist, but I was. And I liked my meal. I ordered the standard order of fish and chips, complete with a dish of mushy peas. The breading on the fish was perfect, the fish tasted fresh (not too fishy). The chips were more like standard American french fries than the fried chipped potatoes that I've had at other places. I ordered a Diet Coke to drink, and a small bottle was served with a glass of ice (few restaurants keep soft drinks on tap). Service was speedy and friendly. When I had to pay, they didn't fuss with me needing to split my bill and swipe an American credit card. Because Harry Ramsden's is a chain, I'd consider eating there again if I saw one in my area. read more

I came here in hopes of finding quality British fish and chips. I'm from the US and although I've had fish and chips at home, I was eager to try true London fish and ships. Unfortunately I found soggy/saltless potatoes, mushed bland peas, and greasy haddock. It wasn't inedible by any means- I mean I'm the girl that eats everything. And I ate this meal. But if I'm going to be eating something that is that iconic in the UK and waste the heavy calories on it, I really expected a lot more. I went in here with some friends the other day on a lovely sunny day by the seaside, we thought it would be good in here seeing as we had heard good things from it but it is safe to say we now regret ever walking through the door of the so called "world famous fish and chips". This is the second (and probably last) time that I've visited this place, which probably tells you all you need to know. It's just OK, not dreadful, adequate maybe, but certainly not awesome. It's convenient for Brighton Pier and probably gets a lot of custom for that reason. On a cool, windy Saturday afternoon, with two tired children complaining about being hungry, it was the least worst option we could identify without walking very far. Our waiter was friendly. The menu choice was alright (the only bright point was the bottle of Black Sheep beer), but the food wasn't exactly piping hot, the adult portion sizes were a bit on the small side, and for what you got it was very over-priced. We didn't bother stopping around for desserts. Still, it got us out of the drizzle, and filled the stomachs of our children, but I will look elsewhere next time I'm in "London-by-the-sea". read more

Harry Ramsden's is a large combined take-away and restaurant just back from the Pier, purporting to sell "the best fish & chips" in town. In fact, Harry Ramsden's serves microwaved-from-frozen, overpriced bilge. On recommendation from my cousin (who is twelve, so maybe not a great source, but I'm trusting like that) I went there with a group of about six people for a friend's birthday. It was an incredible disappointment, between us, we ordered the full range of staples: cod, plaice, steak and kidney pie, scampi, chips, mushy peas and so on, and not one thing was beyond palettable. The steak and kidney pie, especially, at more than £8, was a disgrace. It was soggy, pallid, cold in the centre, and tasted like a flannel marinated in oxo. The fish and chips were all just about ok, but i think that probably everywhere else in town that i've been is better. As I've said, I'm the trusting type, so I gave Harry a chance to redeem himself and ordered pudding, as did one of my friends, the other five of them preferring to wait until they could just get a mars bar from the newsagents. They made the right decision. The apple pie, and chocolate pudding that we ordered were as underwhelming as the mains, and both were pretty meagre portions. Whilst the restaurant is housed in a nice enough building with panoramic views, it is next to a busy road and the decor is tired and tacky. The service was slow, although friendly, so I've no real gripes there, but if better food comes out your toaster at home, then the place really shouldn't be called a restaurant. If you ever feel tempted, just take a short walk west along the promenade, there are several better places, and all of them cheaper. read more

Quite possibly the best fish and chip shop in brighton. Cheap at the price too. For £4.90 I had chips, cod and a HUGE gherkin (c'mon, it's all about the gherkins). If you like mushy peas, beans or coleslaw, this comes in a seperate little pot so as not so spill over your food, especially if you're sharing. The fish is just how is should be, soft, white, clean and delicious. An absolute delight to munch on the pebble beach on in the restaurant if the weather is gloomy. The staff are super friendly and fast. Make sure you go. Much cheaper and nicer than the chips served on the pier. Yum! read more

The best chippy around by far. Clean, cosy and cheap. You'll get a meal for under a fiver, great! Here they even give you free re-fills of chips if you are sitting in the restaurant, not the take away bit, talk about great value for money! The view from the restaurant is lovely of course being Brighton pier. The staff here are more than happy to help you and are very quick! The place is child friendly and has an extensive, good value for money child menu. A quick tip for you, I visited this restaurant in August just gone and when about to tip our waitress, I checked if it would go to her or the mangement, and she said - management, so don't bother tipping here unless they change that. read more

I went in a largish group (but then again it is a large restaurant) and there were problems serving eveyone at the same time and with the right foods. When it did come the food was cold and not all that great if it had been hot. It was also really expensive for what should be a cheap meal ! Maybe I was just unlucky ? There are no shortage of good fish and chip restaurants in Brighton. If I was you I'd go to one of the take aways - pay half the price - and sit on the beach ! Being my first visit to the city, my friends and I decided to have some 'real' fish and chips by the sea, and after a quick google decided on this place. The place is set out with a victorian/1940s sea-side glamour decor which fits the view of the pier, and the waiters wear waistcoats and shirts which is surprisingly smart for what is essentially a chippy. The service was friendly, quick but on occasions distant. Initially the prices seem a tad extortionate (£9.95 for cod and chips), but when it arrives the meal quickly validates the price. Myself and one friend had the cod, which was cooked to perfection! The fish was moist and meaty, while the batter was golden and delicious - not too greasy, not too dry. The chips were also perfectly cooked and an equally generous portion to the fish, with an ample pot of mushy peas and tartar sauce to accompany it all. My other friend had the Haddock, which was a lot bigger in size for the same price, so I would probably pick that next time. Overall, I would certainly spend that bit extra on going back to this plaice (get it! ha) as we left very full and very happy - the taste was worth every penny. read more

One cold rainy day, the bestie and i decided to hit the town and try out the world famous fish 'n' chips. Although i did my research on where to eat, the raininess and the windiness prevented us from exploring the town. By the time we got the to pier, we were cold and wet, ready to devour whatever fish 'n' chips that we could find. All three locals that we talked to directed us to this "world famous" place. The waiting time wasn't that bad; 5 mins in the warmth is nothing compared to 30 mins of wandering in the cold. We ordered the "challenge" which consisted of a laaarge piece of fish of your choice, a large amount of chips (or fries. hah), and two things of beans of your choice. We split the portion, which was perfect (for two girls at least). The fish was a bit bland, but nothing that tartar sauce and ketchup can't fix! Mushy peas were a little bland too, but good enough to tickle my fancy. Overall, i don't know if it was the hunger that made the food taste like heaven, but I can say with conviction that we left the restaurant feeling extremely satisfied. We went in because they had V's for vegetarian on the menu and fancied chips, and also I wanted to try the battered Brie. After a short discussion with two of the waiters we'd eliminated everything but Chips and the salad as actually being suitable for vegetarians - everything else including the onion rings, were fried in the same oil as fish. Not wanting a salad we just ordered chips. The waiter soon returned after speaking with the manager and said that they cannot just serve chips in the restaurant and we should order from the Take out window. What a farce and a cheek! They mark food up as suitable vegetarian when it isn't, and then when they are incapable of offering a desirable alternative they basically ask us to leave. We were polite and understanding, Harry Ramsden's obviously do not understand what is suitable for vegetarians and should stop marking items on the menu as such. Seriously if you are vegetarian, or have a vegetarian in your party I would advise avoiding Harry Ramsden's. read more
