Consistently delicious food and great service. Everything I've ever had here has been made fresh and served hot. It's nice they have plenty of seating so don't need to wait for a table. I had the omnivore (bacon) grilled cheese with fries. Their fries are delicious and the grilled cheese has sliced apples in it to cut the cheesy heaviness. Can always count on a good time here. The Next Act is one of my top spots to eat when I'm down by Whyte Ave. I've been here quite a few times but kept putting my review off for one reason or another. The bar selection here is pretty good, but I always stick to one particular cider here since this is the only place I can seem to find it. They always have a good selection of bottles and draught so there is something for everyone. The entrees are delicious. I tend to stick with the Mac and Cheese, but I've seen some pretty awesome burgers and sandwiches come out of here. They all look and smell heavenly, so I can definitely understand why they've won so many awards. The reason I can only give three stars is due to a couple factors. First, the staff here is hit or miss. I don't know if it's because there are so many people here at any given time or if they are friendlier to people who come in more regularly, but sometimes they aren't always the most attentive. We've had to wait for more than 20th minutes just to order our drinks. Secondly, the appetizers here are kind of disappointing. I probably wouldn't keep ordering them as they seem to lack much flavour. The Next Act is one of those places you either love or you hate, and overall I still love this place. read more

It has been almost a year since my husband Mike and I sat down for a meal and my heart has missed Next Act like no other. We have been coming here for years and we have never once been let down. Great food, great drink and amazing service. Today my soul was happy with a couple pints of Prairie Fairy and their Cameo Burger; The Land We Live On. I was really happy to hear all proceeds from the burger went to Treaty 6 Outreach! Mike got their Pyrotechnic Burger and wasn't disappointed. I came here for dinner during fringe week. It was VERY busy for obvious reasons but the wait time surprisingly wasn't so bad. My friend ordered nachos which was a gigantic order and could've easily been split 3 ways. It came with a decent sized portion of guacamole, sour cream, and salsa on the side. I ordered the beef brisket and fries. I enjoyed my meal as well as sampled my friend's nachos which tasted great. They had some other items on the menu that sounded tasty. Prices are average for a place like this. Our waiter did a decent job. All in all I don't have anything to really complain about. Bathrooms are very awkward and small though. Hopefully no one tries to enter the bathroom while you try to exit your stall otherwise one of you won't be able to get out/in. read more

I've wanted to review The Next Act for quite some time, but I hadn't physically been there in probably 5 years, so I had to wait until I had a more recent experience. And now that has happened! After an Elite event, we headed down the road to get some tacos (it was Tuesday afterall!) from somewhere else, but when we got there and found out it was an hour and a half wait, we hoofed it right back out the door. So we gave up on the taco idea and headed to The Next Act. Am I ever happy that we did!! The interior hasn't changed at all, but the menu seems to have. I quickly decided on the brisket donair. The brisket comes from MEAT next door (same owners) and is served on naan bread, rather than pita. Honestly... amazing. Absolutely amazing. The sweet sauce goes so well with the brisket, I wouldn't change a single thing. 2 out of 3 of us ordered it and were both very happy. The 3rd ordered mac and cheese... which is her favourite meal and she was very happy with it as well!! Oh man... what a meal? So why not 5 stars? Our server did check on us once during the meal, then came and dropped off the cheques... but then we didn't see her for a very long time.... and we didn't realize we had to go to the front to pay with a card. I haven't updated since 2014! SHAME! Still offering unique and delicious beverages, great food and ambiance. Ordered Big Rock pear cider - big mouth 473 mL cans - that's no joke, and finished it all. Great conversation helps consumption! Their fridge is still packed with unique and great selection of offerings. Our server (knowledgeable as always!) informed us that they were just launching the winter menu, so the Cameo burger was taking a little break. My companion ordered a burger - it was a MONSTER! Bacon overflowing, juicy, now there's value for the $! Did you know they tied in challenge #11 of Baconhound's Burger Odyssey?! They do offer gluten free buns/bread as well. I usually order the Grilled Cheese gluten-free and it's usually fantastic - a little surprise with the thin-sliced apple, and delicious! But today, I was craving some meat. I avoid it at most restaurants because I am often disappointed with the quality, however, today, I ordered the steak sandwich, and it *did not* disappoint. Butler cut, and on gluten-free toast with sautéed mushrooms and onions - perfectly done as ordered. The steak was think enough, I cut it in half and had one half on each side of toast - just delicious! Fries - still made in a dedicated gluten-free fryer! But do ask if you are sensitive, they may have had to use it for a special, and they WILL tell you! Gluten free gravy! Oh yes, and it was goooood today! I upgraded to poutine...+$3 and SO worth it! I was totally craving it in the chilly season. Bit noisy, and maybe I'm a bit deaf, but that's always how it's been here. Sit close to your friends to hear better! There is now permanent year-round bicycle parking just out front! Along with a bicycle service unit, complete with pump and tools. As stated in my previous review, I am not a winter 2-wheeler, but there were others braving the -12C weather and parked in the corral! Good on them, and I'm sure they were as pleased as I am that Edmonton is embracing the multi-modal transportation options! Parking, we lucked out and ended up only a block away this time. It wasn't too chilly, and the sidewalks had all been cleared. I do find the service here to be spotty - they can be very busy with not enough staff on hand, or we've been in and staff are downright snippy. I like the PB&J burger here, but it's just because I think all burgers should come with a peanut butter option. We recently came for brunch and unfortunately the steak & eggs were disappointing, but the french toast was great. So definitely hits and misses. Cheesy perfection! :) We also appreciate that they have some nice rotating taps and often have Unibroue on draught. The menu is what brings us in but i also reaaaally appreciate the staff. I've been eating here for at least 15 years and one thing i've noticed is the community of staff they've cultivated are consistently really awesome dudes and dudettes that seem to really love their jobs and hanging out with you. The Next Act is a favourite go-to place - has been for years! I love that it's locally owned and in turn supports other locally owned suppliers. (I'm not typically a beer drinker but Prairie Fairy by YEG's own Sea Change Brewery is on tap and AMAZING!) A few dishes use melt-in-your-mouth smoked beef brisket and chicken from the sister restaurant next door, aptly named Meat. (Try the donair! So good!) Come to think of it, I've never had a bad meal here. It's mostly burgers, sandwiches, and typical pub grub, but it is all done so well! The nachos are HUGE and even the skinny fries and side salads that accompany the mains are fresh and delicious. (Try the garlic parm dip with the fries!) Service is always prompt and friendly. My only criticism would be that it's loud in the restaurant despite the fact that they have made the effort to install acoustic panels. I guess that's what happens when you're consistently busy and full of social creatures. :) Give yourself time to find parking. It's always a challenge in this neighbourhood. I couldn't tell you why I waited for so many years to finally try this place. I heard all the hype about it, and I am often disappointed by hyped up places. Which likely contributed to the delay in getting my ass to this place. I lives up to every one of my expectations. Great food, great atmosphere. Everything just worked well. It is loud, but bearable. And crowded, but in the good way a great pub like place should be. It was uncomplicated food with big flavour. We started with the nachos which were probably a poor choice, not taste wise, but size wise. They are a good portion for 2 people to share as a lighter meal, a group of 4 as an app, or just one very hungry and happy human. I might just do that next time. Maybe, too many things on the menu that I need to put in my mouth. I had the Class Act burger. Any burger topped with an egg is a must try for me. It did not disappoint. Edmonton isn't the city I remembered, at least not with places like The Next Act around. But look at it meow! It's a nice combination of a burger/sandwich joint and other pub fare with a casual upscale feel. And holy yelparoni... it was busy from the time we popped in around 7 and tables were still being filled when we left about an hour and a half later. In keeping with its name, you'll find burgers with names like The Class Act, The Critic and The Drama Queen. I went with The Director... cuz, ya know, I like to be in charge ;). The Director comes with avocado, jack cheese and stewed green chillies. Fries are included, but you can substitute soup or a salad for a dollar extra. Personally, I'm not a fan of the extra dollar for substitution, especially when the burger's already going for $14. Why not just offer it all up as side choices from the get go? Anyway, it's a minor pet peeve. I went the extra dollar and got the soup of the day, butternut squash soup. It came with a lovely little cream pattern on the top. It was so pretty... like a soup barrista made it or something. While in Edmonton, it's only appropriate I have at least a pint of Edmonton beer. I started out with a seasonal selection of Alley Kat, followed up with a pint of Deschutes... a rather tasting beer out of Portland. Bathroom details: The bathroom's pretty tiny with just two stalls. For a busy night, it was in decent enough condition... though it could do without the metallic walls. Service... Gets an A. We were well cared for, food came out in a reasonable amount of time and I don't think there was ever a point where we went without an empty glass. When I find myself in E-town again, I'll very likely be making a visit back to The Next Act. read more

For me, this place seems to be about comfort food with a creative twist. Normally I'm usually of the opinion that you don't change a classic, cause it's classic for a reason. I've been burnt way too many times thinking "ooh, that sounds like a neat twist on a favourite -- how can it go wrong?" But it can, and it usually does. The Next Act though is an exception. They seem perfectly capable of navigating the fine line between creative and crazy when it comes to playing with flavour combinations. I'm not sure how they do it, but they've nailed it. I tried the mac and cheese my first time here and it was one of the cheesiest I've ever had. True, it was pretty dense but if you're ordering a mac and cheese, you're not on any diet. It's a thick, gooey hot mess and it's absolutely delicious! But my favourite here so far has to be the PB&J burger. This recipe is just pure genius. The burger doesn't look like anything fancy, in fact it's a huge mess when you eat it. But it's so worth every bite! The crunchy peanut butter beneath the patty just gives the burger that extra flavour kick you knew was missing in every burger you've eaten until now. And the "jelly" is more of a bacon compote, cause it would be weird to have actual jam in your burger and how can you go wrong with bacon? The place itself is small and relaxed, and doesn't try to be trendy at all. It's just all about the food and the people. Strong, friendly service that takes care of you and everyone always seems to be enjoying themselves. Now I know why this place is so popular; it's one of my favourites now too. read more

Stopped in for brunch with the hubby as we wanted to try a new place vs the old stand by. We got here about 15 mins before they opened and the line up steadily grew until the doors opened. Initial service was quick and speedy, but we did wait a while for our food to come after we put in our food order. This is understandable as they were almost completely full right at opening. The food was worth the wait. I had the breakfast poutine, which was delicious. The gravy was the best part. Overall, good flavour, not too salty and the over easy egg on top was cooked to perfection with a yummy runny yolk. Hubby had the hangover breakfast and again his eggs were cooked beautifully - the seasoned hash browns were his favourite part of the meal. Service was great given how busy they were. The Next Act has been re-invented! I believe, just about a year back it was purchased by a group of passionate beer drinkers that have made it a point to come up with an improved list of beer on the tap and bottled, along with a nice collection of pub fare, which is actually tasty. The ambience is still old school and has a nice charm to it. A lot of green. They've got a lot of green on the outside which gives it a bit of Patty's day feel to it. A contrast would be Pourhouse that has a more upscalish feel to its ambience and food menu. I like the lazy feel of this bar. It's a little bit of a mature feel. I've gone on a few occasions, with my pocketbook to actually do work .. it doesn't help after the first beer! But the very casual atmosphere with spacious seating there, makes for a good comfortable place to read and write stuff. Not particularly great for beer connoisseurs but certainly does justice to its name, location and feel. Great find! read more

I can't believe I've never written a review for this place. I suppose I was too busy coming back and enjoying delicious food and drinks. Huh, interesting... Anyways, this place is a gem. It's always full, but you never have to wait long for a table. They have booths along the walls and then tables in the middle. Not going to lie, the interior isn't the prettiest thing ever and everything is forest green, but whatever. Literally everything else makes up for it. They do have cool art on the walls though, I believe it's all local! Everything here is reasonably priced and everything tastes good. My all time favourite is the chicken sandwich with brie. I honestly dream about that sandwich. The fries here are also top notch, and I know, because my body has consumed about 10 pounds of them in the past few months. Poutine is great, and the spinach dip is another starter that never fails to be super delicious. Drinks are good too, even though I'm not much of a drinker. I had a long island iced tea the last time I was here and it was great. Like, I could drink 7 of them type great (I didn't drink 7 of them in case you were wondering...) Service here has never been anything exceptional, but it's always been sufficient. I've never dealt with an unpleasant or rude server and they have always been eager and willing to sort out any issues you may have. Service is also pretty quick. You don't wait too long for your food or drinks, and your servers will check in on you but not to the point where you're irritated. Which is cool. Thanks for letting me enjoy my meal, and also thank you for caring about my meal and my experience. Overall, great place. I come back on the reg, and it's incredibly consistent. I do wish that it wasn't so crazy busy all the time, but hey, when it's a great establishment that serves great food, of course it's going to be a hot spot. If you haven't been here yet... A very interesting atmosphere to say the least, a very quaint little pub/diner just off of Whyte Avenue. It would seem that it is a frequently packed house. Inside of the arts District in the Old Strathcona neighbourhood. A delicious meal that is reasonably priced. I had the critic burger very delicious with home made fries. All burgers and buns are made in house fresh daily. My girlfriend had the cameo burger special of the day which is a burger that changes daily. We shared a Caesar salad. What a delicious rendition of this staple salad. Lots of garlic and fresh bacon bits with fresh parmesan. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is very busy. Moderately priced too. This is a pub/dinner not for kids. Plenty of different non domestic beers for that beer lover in the family. And plenty on tap too. Mainly from the alleykat brewery. If not for the fact we moved to the deep south, we'd still be making this our beloved brew station. They made some changes to the menu to accomodate folks with different food practices... WOOT WOOT! The location is great - we walked over after shopping at the Strathcona Farmer's Market for brunch. The place isn't the nicest on the inside but the food definitely makes up for it. The Meat Brisket Donair was off the regular menu and was awesome, though not really a 'real' donair. The brisket tasted delicious with the feta cheese and it was good that they didn't just pour a ton of sweet sauce on. The naan bread was also perfect for the dish and i. If you take into account the fact that this isn't really a real donair, it might just be one of the best dishes in Edmonton! The Breakfast Sandwich was off the NEXT act's brunch menu and was also very good. The toasted brioche bun tasted great combined with the overeasy egg and cheddar cheese. The 'smashbrowns' that came as a side in the brunch menu were also good but definitely made the plate too much to finish in one sitting. Servers were nice and food came out fast. Another solid visit to The Next Act. We are always impressed with the friendly service and relaxed atmosphere here. Our server knew the menu well and offered honest advice. There were a few new items on the menu including the Asian Shrimp Burger. Which was kind of like a crab cake with a sriracha tartar coleslaw. The sandwich was tasty and messy. It didn't stay together and I ended up eating it deconstructed. I've actually had this experience before at Next Act. I think it's the brioche bun? My husband had the Brisket Donair. The ingredients were all yummy though it could have used more sauce. I also opted for the house salad which was a nice alternative side dish. Then again, it's hard to pass up fresh fries and I ended up sneaking a few from across the table. We also love to see local beer on tap and Next Act does not disappoint. I moved to this area late October, and I've already eaten here at least 5 times. It's a great experience every time I go in. I usually dine alone, and the staff is very good at gauging how much I want to talk each time. Every member of the staff is so wonderful. I've been trying different things on the menu - my favourites are the mushroom soup, the fish and chips (tartar sauce is amazing), and the house salad. There are a lot of vegetarian and vegan options, too. They also have cool rotating dessert features. This is the favourite Whyte Ave. area pub of local actors. You can usually see them after rehearsals and shows enjoying a few cold ones in the laid back and understated atmosphere of the Next Act. It's pretty plain inside - just an old wooden sectional bar and some green faux leather-upholstered booths, dim lighting and friendly waitresses. We sat in the corner, where there's a giant couch corner couch and table, good for group conversation or small parties. We ordered a couple of Keiths and a half-dozen honey garlic wings, just to quell our hunger. The Next Act is famous for its burgers but we weren't in the mood, so afterwards we went across the street to Accents for some more classy appies. (At Next Act, most stuff is deep fried.) Still, it's a good stop for an after-work drink or Friday night out with the family. read more

Horrible service. I'm injured and suffering from a car accident. The greeter did not offer us the last table except offered us the bar and gave it to the lady behind us. I asked why weren't we offered that table and he said he saw she had a baby. Noted. I understood. I then waited for an open table and asked politely if we can have a seat that has a back support and shared that I have an injury. I was denied because they had another set of people that's on a wait list. So someone who's already there and asking if they can accommodate someone who's injured is not on their priority list. Food might be okay but the customer service is garbage. I personally appreciate an establishment that's accommodating and offers sympathy. They didn't even care. On a normal day I would love to sit by the bar and skip the wait list. This is a rare occasion for me to ask for a comfortable seat that would support my back and neck. The first time I went here I didn't think it was great but that might have just been my poor choice of burger, like it wasn't bad but maybe I had expected a lot more. This second time I just went because I wanted a burger and I wasn't disappointed at all. I was thinking about getting their class act burger, but then I was enticed by the waitress's suggestion of their cameo burger (which is their special). It was called the "Orange County" which was a citrus marinated chicken with salsa cruda, arugula, asiago cheese and mayo on a lemon poppy seed bun. The burger was fantastic especially considering I was thinking about getting a beef burger. The chicken wasn't dry, and it was very tender and juicy. The "citrus" profile wasn't over powering but it was just flavourful enough that I enjoyed every bite of it. I got that with a side of poutine, which is something that is hard to ruin. The fries were hot, the cheese curds were chunky (in a good way), and the gravy was pretty hot, but not hot enough that it melted the cheese curds to my liking; Having said that I still enjoyed it. We also got a spinach dip to share that you really can't go wrong with, it came with tortilla chips and naan bread to dip. The service was nice, and came back to check on us enough that we didn't need to call them over unnecessarily but not so much as to feel pressured as can be the case at some other restaurants. We enjoyed the casual atmosphere but it was a bit loud, but that's to be expected at a bar type eatery.
